I've had this happen with much older black tees and sweatshirts too. I bought a really cool deadstock 1950s black sweatshirt last month. I tried it on and it seemed fine but I noticed a little bit of black powdery dust coming off of the inside. I decided to hand wash it and as soon as it touched the water it just started shredding to pieces.
It happened to me and I am so bummed. I found a Ramie/Cotton blend sweater, definitely a young vintage died a very lustrous black with a honey bee comb embroidered in beautiful honey gold on the front and a bit on the back, scattered with beaded Honey Bees all over it. I needed to wash it because it said on the label "Do Not Dry Clean", and I got it from Goodwill which has an odor all it's own. I should have gotten the clue when the button holes wouldn't hold. I soaked it for a little while then lifted it and it was shredding right in my hands. I have never experienced that in my life. I got the sweater because my brother just started raising honey bees and I wanted to wear it to honor his new endeavor. Now I know to watch for this in future purchases. But I am going to copy the pattern and put it on a NEW black sweat shirt, and transfer the beaded bees to the sweat shirt. More my style any way.
Thanks for the info on dry rot! Have you had any luck selling shirts that had dry rot when tested; sell to anyone who might want for display or something but not to wear?
I've had more ppl hit me up in the past couple weeks either questioning or straight up accusing my deadstock pieces of dry rot. Saying how a tee "looks shiny" in pics. How you can tell from looking at a pic is beyond me. Frustrating as hell. I'm losing out on sales simply because ppl are sketching themselves out by reading dry rot horror stories on reddit. I've been selling 4 years now, had a couple hundred deadstock tees and I've only ever had one instance with dry rot. Maybe I'm just lucky or haven't handled enough deadstock yet but still seems like an awful lot of dry rot detectives popping up all of a sudden. Just want to make sure this isn't getting blown out of proportion and feeding into ppls paranoia. You've handled thousands of deadstock tees, is it really that common an issue? Appreciate your insight.
Hey, Its not that common. I didnt really say its super common. It does happen though. This is not meant to make people paranoid its just meant to talk about what it is.
I think the environment the shirt is stored in can either delay or speed up the process I’ve had shirts that were deadstock that I left in storage and in two years turned dry rot.
Some details for dry rot.... If you are testing your tees with PH4 or more, might as well frame it. Its knackered. This is caused by the use of cheaper Sulphur based dyes, Reactive dyes are better but expensive and will not suffer this. It should be called Acid Rot instead. The Two points below are not the same as above not dry rot. There is also a cellulose eating bacteria, that will eat into cotton hemp, silk also does this too, any fabric material that is cellulouse based. To prevent this wash and dry them thoroughly. I have seen this happen on white cotton shirt, but that had reached near zero water content, for that the solution is to soak it in water for 24 hours too rehydrate the fibres and properly dry out. Bleach is the other end of the PH scale it is an Alkiline. As far as I know i may be wrong
I recently had a washed, faded red 90s tee dry rot on me. Was early stages so I coulda saved it, but I was stretching it and it just gave up on me. Not just black tees so watch out!!
OK so I am watching this video as of June 30, 2023 because I just spent $177 on a dead stock wrestlemania 13 vintage shirt from 1997. Long story short I took it out of the package gave it a little Pull test and rightfully so the whole shirt was dry rotted and it ripped by the two shoulders one rip on each side. talk about being pissed lol 🤦🏻♂️…. Good thing is lol I got my money back.
I have a vintage 2000s Cleveland Indians grey fully breathable t shirt (A dream of a shirt) that is currently dry rotting. It is extremely fragile. Anything I can do to save it or alternatives? Like I said it’s a dream of a shirt and one of a kind of course. I was thinking sewing another fabric (T-shirt) and attaching it underneath. Thanks - currently watching vid
Question: Does it affect other clothes that are stored together? I found one in a box and im concerned it can transfer/infect to other clothes in my collection.
One other point, theres a market for "wearable" torn, deteriorated, ripped teeshirts. I think it must be a fetish thing, as you can get a lot of cash for these
So this particular type of dryrot that that you are talking about can only happen to NOS of black color? Also it just looked like the shirt you tore was just threadbare and you ripped it?
Thanks for the info. I find the hit rate in thrift stores in KC for vintage tees is really low. Are all the good tees already in private collections or the landfill?@@FasinFRANKclothing
Dry rot actually can happen to white tees as well ~ anything cotton can get it ~ even denim pants.

Another way to test is to scrape the fabric lightly with your finger 4- 5 times and an unusual amount of fuzz comes off it probably has dry rot.
Just had to wash one of my Mars attacks shirts. Started having that sheen and feel to it. Tested it and sure enough it was in the beginning stages...

Dry rot can occur in all color shirts not just black. I’ve even come across some white shirts with dry rot

You literally wearin a shirt I‘m searching for since a year 😂
I’ve had dry rot happen to boxers randomly that aren’t old or T-shirts that aren’t that old either so idk
Thank you mate, so helpful!
You can always just frame the dry rot shirts. They still look good that way!
Now I know that happened to my black Nike tshirt from 2005
I had an 80s white tee that seemed to be dry rotted. It ripped easily. If it isn't dry rot what was it?

Question is!!! can you still wear it ?

Interesting I don’t think I’ve seen that humanitees shirt in black, seen it in white like 50 times
One other point, theres a market for "wearable" torn, deteriorated, ripped teeshirts. I think it must be a fetish thing, as you can get a lot of cash for these
From a health standpoint, Is it harmful to breathe this in?

It can happen to any vintage black. Trust me on this. Dry rot is real.

@@Kevin-rs6cr they may be all picked over. Maybe they get pulled by the goodwill employees for their website. Etc.
@@FasinFRANKclothing I am on the hunt, if you any tips on where and when to look, I am all ears. Cheers, mate.

Does dry rot happen if I have my clothes in a warm area?
If a shirt has dry rot and you put it next to a non dry rot shirt can the non dry rot get it ?
So if my 90s/ early 00s shirts have a fade or wash they shouldn't dry rot right? Since they've been washed.
ye
Yes. For the. It’s part. It’s still can happen but washing is good. It happens to deadstock much more then worn washes shirts
@@FasinFRANKclothing so if u don’t wash it again for years it can get dry rot?
@@6ix9vi6 no, the sulfur in the dye has been removed thru washing before it can turn acidic.
@@John_shepard so I can wash it once and it should be fine right?
What if it only rips on the bottom but not anywhere else

Do not purchase black DEADSTOCK
Online unless you have trust.
What if ppl use a air purifier and anti humidifier to keep their clothes from dry rotting 🤔
This type of rot is caused by the acidity in the black dye you blonde
