Thanks again Sailrite and Angela !!! great tutorial , i have learnt so much from you guys ... just finished my first river boat canopy and seat cover install thanks to watching these videos. Keep up the great work !!! all the best from Adelaide Australia.
She makes this look so easy! I think the darts would be the hardest part, transferring those lines into a sewing machine with out visible lines seems like a nightmare. Very impressive
Great video! Very informative about Sunbrella fabric. I just wish the person that made my center console cover had watched this. You do a very professional job. I definitely would choose you to make my next cover!
Thanks, I just made a nice bow cover using the tape to fit method you illustrated. Now i need to order more tape for the mooring cover. I bought a used boat with snaps, but no covered. I ordered navy sunbrella. thanks for created and posting this video. Bill from Augusta, ga
Great video. Learnt so much from your first class explanation. Planning on making my own motor boat deck cover to keep the rain out during its summer mooring. Once again many thanks.
I learned why you based everything in place...FYI to all of you, althoughI am using something intended for apparel construction I will def buy the basting tape next time ( the stuff I am using is only 2-3$).
video is 9 years old. i have watched it multiple times along with the pontoon video. great organization, procedure and details. would like to see a cover for a smaller boat--bass boat, center console, jet ski etc with emphasis on the the different considerations for a smaller boat. how many rolls of 129 does a typical boat take?
Good suggestion, Thanks!!! We do have a jet ski cover tutorial video here: ua-cam.com/video/XxLDDoPyNI8/v-deo.html If you buy the 50 yard Seamstick for Canvas SKU:129 it will take about 3 rolls on average.
I get so much useful information from sailrite videos. However, I really would like to see a demonstration of a boat cover that has to go around objects such as bimini poles and cleats using hook and loop.
We have a new trailing cockpit cover video coming out very soon. It does not use hook and loop but instead snaps. However, it was designed to installed with the bimini poles down. Be watching for it on our channel or website.
Don’t let that hold you back. Do this. Make the first cover from calico. When that’s done, go straight on to your second and third covers in the correct fabric.
I started buying supplies from sailrite last year. I am hoping to buy the rest along with a sailrite sewing machine and attempt to make my own enclosers along with a storage tarp. I have my supplies shipped to the US side of the Canada ,USA border. I have supplies sitting in the US since last fall as the border is closed till July21, 2020. Once the border is open i will pick up supplies and head to the lake for a few weeks while making my enclosers. How fun will that be.
This video was amazing! Just by watching and listening I am now more confident about making a cover for my boat! Now I just need to purchase the Fabricator machine and supplies and I'll be set!!
I remember watching this years ago when i first contemplated replacing my boat cover. I've been handstitching loose threads and restitching stretched zios and patching the windows. Maybe this will be my winter project. Do I need an industrial sewing machine? I have a modern domestic machine. Thanks.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad my video sparked your interest in replacing your boat cover. In terms of whether you need an industrial sewing machine, your modern domestic machine should work fine for most boat cover projects, but an industrial machine might be better suited for heavy-duty materials. It's always a good idea to test it out on a scrap piece of fabric first to see how it handles.
Great video, thanks for sharing. Its given me the push to make my own cover. one question I have is there another product that you would suggest using for the chafe areas? not able to seem to find the same product you guys use up where I am. thanks in advance
I would love to see another video with a cockpit cover that has bimini poles/mounts and how to work around those. Or even a boat that has a tubular arch on it. Any idea if/when you would do a video like that?
I thoroughly enjoy these videos. I doubt I would have the patience or stamina to make a boat cover. I would end up with a pile of fabric that would not fit. Some of us are better off paying someone to do it.
Question - Our sailboat cover is made from questions heavy canvas and over the years has gotten quite stiff and maybe a bit brittle. How can we keep it soft and strong?
When the fabric becomes brittle, it is a sign that it is near the end of its life. Nothing can be done when it reaches that point except replace it, sorry.
I may be wrong but it seems as if once the four panels are sewn together the fabric should be flipped over and put back onto the boat. This way the dart markings do not need to be transferred to the other side before sewing.
@@TERMIN8TOR99 He would probably put it back on right side up after sewing the darts. Many boats, such as the one in this video (other than the ladder) are quite symmetrical.
If the rough fabric panel had been placed on the boat inside out after seaming, then all that work transferring the darts to the other side and potentially losing some shape would have been negated given that the boat should be identical on both sides?
Great video! I'm about ready to make a cover for my 1976 Cobalt, but it doesn't have snaps below the rub-rail. Would you recommend installing snaps, or would it be better to tie this down to the trailer? Also, the ladder *really* sticks out from the rub-rail, maybe 9" or so, that really puts a gap in the transom. What should I do? Thanks, Love the videos, John
You can tie it off to the trailer instead of using snaps, but this means you can only use the cover when on the trailer. I like snaps personally. You should build out a separate cover for the ladder that will still be sewn to the main cover, just follow the principles in the video for that. ENJOY!
Thanks for sharing your video! Getting ready to make a loose cover to keep the sun off of our Chaparral (will go over the manufacturer's cover). What size straight stitch would you recommend?
EXCELENTE VIDEO!!!! GREETINGS FROM CARACAS, VENEZUELA....¿ AS I CAN TAKE STEPS TO MAKE A COVER FOR T-TOP CENTER CONSOLE BOAT 19". (AS DO THE MEASUREMENTS?) THANKS!!!!
Thank you for the video. It would have been nice to explain how to sew the seams so they all end up on the correct side, nevermind getting the seams orientated for water drainage!
Typically if the cover has to be build around the tower poles a "U" shape is cut into the cover the edge hemmed under and a small boot sewn around the edge of the "U" to funnel water past the opening. In many cases the lower portion of the "U" is left open and snapped on the boat at the bottom edge. In some cases a zipper with flap can be used, but this is seldom done, due to more labor time. I hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions.
shermanpedro1......in one of their other videos, they claim that by using their product called “seamstick” (a double sided tape) and using a semi flat felled seam you would have very good results regarding waterproof seams.
So to make it easier could you just sew two 60" pieces that are 20' long down the middle? Seems like that would be better for driving also; so rain wouldn't be forced into the seams, but rather along it to the stern as you drive. I understand you could save some material, any other reason not to make one seam length wise if you have material that is long enough? Then make darts/ etc and cuts...
It's an "in-house" project , for video purposes only.. management boat.. advice. Careful not to burn it like I did, for a real customer, or you'll be replacing the panel lol.. and besides, this time it was hidden by the dbl hem..

@@SailriteDIY I was contemplating the same idea of patterning the cover "inside out". The only thing that seemed to be "not the same shape" was the ladder which could be patterned after the darts were sewn and the cover replaced right side out.
Super helpful video. I've watched it several times over as I work on my own mooring cover. One question: why extend the length of the line scribed around the rub rail by a full inch, instead of a 1/2 inch? Is this additional length for something other than seam allowance?
In the video she marks the cover on the upper portion of the rub rail, so adding the 1" includes for seam allowance and the lower portion of the rub rail. That 1" or 1/2" addition is not too important since a skirt will be added below it anyway.
Kevin Witbrodt A cover can be made using Dura Skrim and then it is used as a patter to cut and sew. Or a rectangle of fabric can be sewn together and it placed on the boat, like it were the patter material and pleats can be created. It is the sewer’s choice.
