Interested in this topic, but not an expert. Yet Imao. These questions arise: 1) how maneuverable are hypersonic missiles? (undoubtedly classified) 2) how many non-hypersonic missiles are required to intercept a hypersonic missile? 3) Is a hypersonic anti-missile possible? and how long it will take to develop. The main feature of a new generation of hypersonic missiles is maneuvers while maintaining the highest speed. In this case, several pre-hypersonic anti-missiles should be launched by one group and put up a barrier of fragments to intercept the enemy missile. The more maneuverable a hypersonic missile, the larger the fragment barrier area should be. Thus, in the case of incorrect calculations for the barrier area, a breakthrough of a hypersonic missile happens and the ship is hit. Another possibility is that new hypersonic missiles are causing more of the old anti-missiles to be spent on interception. Which can lead to the exhaustion of ammunition and a much greater damage to the ship with a smaller volley of missiles. Also, as I think, one of the main advantages of the new hypersonic missiles is a long range. Those that are on ships will be larger and longer-range than those on airplanes. Which, perhaps, will bring aircraft carrier formations and anti-aircraft carrier cruisers closer in terms of combat capabilities.

Off-Topic Question Mr. Sutton, what is the difference between a midget submarine and a mini-submarine? And any thoughts about the Turkish mini-submarine?
"Mini-sub" was a term coined in the late 1940s (from memory), by the Aerojet company. It has become a general term for a small submarine. Whereas Midget Submarine is a term generally used for naval submarines which are quite small, but in relative terms to typical naval subs. I'm editing a video on early soviet Anti-Ship missiles (something I have been working on for over a month now) - they have always knew that they wouldn't be able to match NATO (or US) In Carriers, hence they developed a whole lot of Maritime, Land-based and Airborne Anti-ship missiles to counter the carriers. Of course Russia doesn't have the quantity of USSR, but even with 10-15 years of almost arrested development they have A LOT of experience and both old and some very new ways to deliver warhead into the enemy ship. It should suffice entirely on theater level such as this. They would not be able to entirely destroy NATO Carrier Groups in case of full scale multi-theater War, but they are perfectly capable of taking on what NATO has there at the moment and likely even more (that would depend on how smart NATO is about it - after all you can order all carriers into 1 location and they will be destroyed, but I'm assuming at least average level of competency on both sides).
There's no need to match the US carrier force in open conflict (not power projection). In an era of hypersonics the US carrier fleet has been obsolete for a decade now. It's still very good at geo political power projection, but not open conflict like what we're about to see in Ukraine.
@@otm646 Do you have any proof (not propaganda) of large scale deployment of such LONG-RANGE systems? Because I only know of 1 regiment that officially has "Awangard" in operational use and exactly how operational it is is questionable at best. If you meant "normal" hypersonics - which ones? Most fly below Mach 5 and therefore can be shot down by SM-6. And of course every system can be overwhelmed, but that's been true for decades. Hypersonics have their own weaknesses and there are currently being researched methods of intercepting some of them on lower level.
@@jannegrey SM-6 efficacy is atrocious and easily overwhelmed. The Russians also have a publicly disclosed air launched hypersonic option. Long range is not that important against a carrier, it's a one way mission. If they manage to sink a US carrier it's all over.
@@otm646 First you have to get through the CSG defence and hit the carrier to even think about sinking it. Just think about it - a hypersonic missile has SECONDS in the terminal phase of attack to guide itself on target, diferentiate between the target and decoys, get through CSG defensive rockets, CIWS fire, electronic countermeasures, take into account evasive maneuvers (even a meter or two can make a difference) and finally hit the carrier in a proper way to try to sink it. All this with just ONE sensor...
@@otm646 it is extremely difficult to track a carrier strike force under full steam in open waters. I have no doubt Russia could sink them in the Mediterranean, but what purpose would this serve? It would only strengthen the US internally and we have like 11 of them.
Great vid. Do you think a nuclear submarine in place of those Kilos (let's say a nice versatile SS(G)N one like Yasen-M) would offer considerable advantages or these SSKs are potentially superior in this-relatively-elbow room of a theater? Random (troll) thought- Can STATUS-6/Poseidon cross the Bosphorus (technically/under current agreements)?
Not to in anyway take away from Mr. Suttons amazing content, but nobody in the US navy is worried about the 12. The biggest threat missile wise is the 26. While the 12 in its day was a scary weapon. I got to see one get shot in 2008.
Yes, as I think I might have said, it's dated. If I didn't, I should have! I feel that the significance is how it is intended, and also as the cruiser at the center of a group. @@nikovbn839 "Nothing should be underestimated." Well, obviously. And nothing should be overestimated, either. And as soon as you're using the phrase "nothing should be underestimated" to back up a claim that "everything is deadly", you're overestimating.
They have the NATO strike group trapped if hostilities break out over Ukraine. The Russian group off Ireland has the Med cut off if we try to bring anymore ships in from the US or Britain to back them up! Bad situation although our land based aircraft can sink them when they run out of missiles.
First of, this is amazing! And such a gift to us viewers! But I'm a little sad that the amphibious troop ships going from the Baltic/Northern fleets to the Black Sea aren't on the tracker. According to the invasions plans leaked/released into German media the first invasion is going towards Odessa and thus cut of Ukraine from the sea. And for this objective, these troop ships are needed.
I shared this to Facebook. I hope this is just an exercise and an effort to pressure Ukraine and NATO. Then again, European countries are very dependent on Russian oil and gasoline in winter. If they do act, it behooves them to act in winter, when they can threaten Europe without resorting to military means, and before the spring thaw turn is large parts of the steppe into a quagmire.
Chinese subs, bet they are out on massive training ops right now... In few weeks the seas should become calm enough even for 'smaller craft' to cross...
Had the Ustinov group gone into the Black Sea we'd know Ukraine was a go. Though if it is off the Syrian coast it could possibly complicate things for NATO air operating out of Incirlik. Those Grumbles have a 90km range...
I love your content, but surely if Russia only has 3 of any class(such as the Slava class, which has been around for many decades), only 1 will be available at any given time. Much like any other navy…
This is legit concerning for another major reason: you HAVE to expect there is at least one Brit/US nuclear sub tailing each of those surface combatant groups. They will hear a missile launch and they could start sinking these things fairly quickly. That means if the Russians decide to launch missiles as an exercise (not actually targeting NATO carriers) this could become a shooting war.
fully expect the russians to make a play for greater Ukraine this year. the real question is, will we come to their aid? Ukraine has expressed interest in joining NATO. all of it's neighbors, save for the bear and Belarus, have joined and are full member states. will we risk a big war, possibly the *last* war, for a small eastern European country? if they commit to NATO, it's the morally right thing to do. it's what we're obliged to do. but is it the smart thing? I know ceding Ukraine to putin and expecting him to back off afterwards is exactly the same flaw that turned Nazi Germany into the threat it was, but Germany didn't have the weaponry to destroy the whole world hundreds of times over. tell me, are YOU ready for total nuclear annihilation? that's what's at stake here. if the Russians attack Ukraine, and we come to their aid... it's no longer 2 minutes to midnight. it's seconds from all life as we know it being snuffed out.
It really does make you worry for if it went hot, which it seems it won't but if it did, NATO is in an utterly awful position (no fault of their own mainly geography constraints). Any troops in Ukraine are not going to be enough so are just going to get killed injured or captured, unless a humiliating withdrawl is announced. The carrier groups in The Mediterranean are just going to be target practice even if somehow they took out one of the task groups, which is probably not even going to occur. The other issue being the Russians are already deployed other nations aren't. So they could get blockaded in port while the ships out are just taken out.
Great video, extremely clear.

Grief.. name the last time 3 slava operated in concert
Can Status-6 do it unnoticed?
@@chronus4421 that's the point. It's meant to park next to a country's coast and detonate. They might already be in certain major cities... who knows
All this focus on the med, means somewhere else something really is happening
These are a blocking force to prevent NATO assistance to Ukraine when the invasion starts.
@@SonsOfLorgar but why so close to Syria?
Not to in anyway take away from Mr. Suttons amazing content, but nobody in the US navy is worried about the 12. The biggest threat missile wise is the 26. While the 12 in its day was a scary weapon. I got to see one get shot in 2008.
Yes, as I think I might have said, it's dated. If I didn't, I should have! I feel that the significance is how it is intended, and also as the cruiser at the center of a group.
Overall thoughts on Ru anti-ship capabilities, although with caveat that focusing on 'carrier killing' capability. www.hisutton.com/Russian-Anti-Aircraft-Carrier-Weapons.html
@@HISuttonCovertShores thank you for your reply! Excellent content. I’ve followed your website for years. Look forward to your videos.
When a ship's defences get overwhelmed, everything is deadly. Nothing should be underestimated.
@@nikovbn839 "Nothing should be underestimated."
Well, obviously. And nothing should be overestimated, either. And as soon as you're using the phrase "nothing should be underestimated" to back up a claim that "everything is deadly", you're overestimating.
tsirkon not a true hyper missile
Uldaloy is a worry tho
and the kilo's
Mayby track where the american forces are also?
Israel has two subs nobody has heard or seen . 🇮🇱
They are out there, watching......waiting.......
i love how 4:55 aged not very well :)
How would Moskva pass through Bosforus if Turkey is part of NATO?
Under Montreux Convention
8:11 "Moskva, the third [cruiser] is currently in the Black Sea."
Still true, 18 months later, and will still be true 18 years later. Baddum-tsh.
ah yes, the classic Arma 3 plot
Interesting, USA blocking your website being visited by multiple browsers. Says "Website not responding." error.
A website is down and you immediately assume it's the US government who is responsible. Seriously?
Chinese subs, bet they are out on massive training ops right now... In few weeks the seas should become calm enough even for 'smaller craft' to cross...
I would wager that as soon as we become preoccupied with a fight over Ukraine that China makes a move on Taiwan.
I'd go along with that.
3 / 3 are active at sea right now
@@HISuttonCovertShores how long would you see them at that level of activity? Having 3/3 at sea is a big ask, especially at their age.
Congratulations Russia, you've trapped several ships in the med, surrounded by overwhelming NATO air power.
P.s. Ukraine would agree 👍 with me,I'm sure.
Israel must be getting more and more on edge.
Welcome to _Cold War version 3.0._ 🙄
Best of luck RU navy, thank you for exposing the intrigues of our enemies.
Easy targets for the Truman
It really does make you worry for if it went hot, which it seems it won't but if it did, NATO is in an utterly awful position (no fault of their own mainly geography constraints). Any troops in Ukraine are not going to be enough so are just going to get killed injured or captured, unless a humiliating withdrawl is announced. The carrier groups in The Mediterranean are just going to be target practice even if somehow they took out one of the task groups, which is probably not even going to occur. The other issue being the Russians are already deployed other nations aren't. So they could get blockaded in port while the ships out are just taken out.
Crimea and The Ukraine have been a part of Russia since 1783, longer than Australia has existed.
The French will surrender. The Italian ship will sink itself. The U.S. ship will be sunk with a hypersonic kinzhal missile.Have a nice day.
Hello, how is Moskva cruiser doing??
