    Something you might try is a combination of subdivision and bevel modifier. Basically what you are doing, just the automatic version instead of manual. I like to set the bevel by weight so I can specify what edges get beveled. Benefit of the bevel mod is then its real easy to adjust the bevel factor instead of having to go back and move vertices. Although I've found some situations where it won't work well still and of course the resulting topology may not be good if you need to apply it.
