My Grandad was told after he got badly wounded at the Somme that he would never be called to fight again. However he was recalled back to the war to fight at the Lys. He survived.

My GG grandfather was in the 4th btn royal fusiliers and died of injuries sustained on the 26th April 1918. Looking at war diaries etc he was just north of bethune. He's buried at lapugnoy cemetery

What happened to Dr. Spencer Jones?
    Did he quit?
He’s so good that sometimes it’s difficult to watch others.

My German grandad may well have been there. The history of the movements of the Oldenburg regiment records the Grosse Schlacht in Frankreich. That would have been the 37th infantry Brigade , the regiment no 91 as part of the 19th division.

My great grandfather was a portuguese soldier who fought in the battle of la lys, he was taken prisioner of the germans and returned home to Alentejo in portugal, where he died in a veteran home for elders at the age of 95...
Note: just an curious observation. He actually digged a small trench bunker in his local hometown when the ww2 war started to hide his daughters.
He hated the germans so much because they made him drink his own piss and had an awful treatment at their hands while in captivity.

He dug a small trench, not digged a small trench, lol.

There is a great rustic cafe on mount kemmel, or at least there was 30 years ago when I enjoyed a great early lunch there....in misty autumn weather.
