As an engineer and ex metal worker/ welder I love it when people get enthusiastic about nice 'simple' machines. You can tell that within 5 minutes he has forgotten that his workshop is cold. I also love the self deprecating commentary when he realised where the combustion air inlet is. 😂
Just took mine apart due to error E10, was absolutely filthy inside and i havent even had it on for 30 minutes total since i bought it. I think i got sold a used one. Cleaned all the carbon, put it back together, took 3 hours. Ran it, no E10 but got E8, turned up the voltage on the transformer and all running smoothly now, amazing amount of heat it chucks out, raised the temp of my 10x10x6ft shed by 3 degrees in 3 minutes. Thank you very much for your videos about these chinese diesel air heaters, i'was thinking about using one of these unit to warm up my little workshop in the winter. My main concern was about the noise they produce, now i can better judge. I've also noticed that the air needed for the combustion is sucked from the impeller (that has to be in communication with the connection for the external air hose through it's center part, hidden below itself) and it is pumped to the rear side of the combustion chamber, that's sealed with a gasket and two rubber parts..... i mean the glow plug cap (red) and the rubber seal that's around the fuel line (black). Now another concern arises in me.... these two pieces of rubber should be made of high quality rubber, otherwise, if some air gets lost through the rubber seals, the burner will run with lower efficiency. Are Webasto and/or Eberspaecher build in the same way? Anyway thank you again for your time and your passion, keep up the good work. Nicola P.S. sorry for my English

I've just ordered one from ebay (my brother has a similar one ((from some seller called 'million billion'!)and it seems great )), so it's good to see the gubbins exposed and see what maintenance might throw up. Looking forward to the next one. Someone on UA-cam tried veggie oil but it failed I think someone said it might work if the oil was pre-heated, but at 100ml/hr I'm happy to use diesel. It will be way better than the hot water bottles we have now!! Cheers from Wales.

Great stuff, David. To be honest, if you get 3yrs out of one of these, and it goes tits up, £130 ain't the end of the world is it? I'll be happy if I get 3yrs out of it, the hard bit is fitting it, I dropped my fuel tank and went in direct, didn't fancy the internal fuel tank. To just change the unit now would be a piece of piss compared to all that aggro.
I am surprised at how inexpensive that these units from China are. But, as you mentioned they are reasonably simple, and when you take into account the mass production and economies of scale in a large manufacturing and shipping enterprise... I guess they can still make $$? I have looked at these on Amazon a few times, and wondered if they are worth taking the risk, but for the price... they just might be. Thanks for the details! I assume the fuel is vaporized byu the glow plug so it will burn since there is no fuel nozel or high pressure oil feed like a regular home oil fired furnace. If they made one that was a turbine you could generate heat and power a shaft driven generator that would be a most interesting device. Once started no external power would be needed.
The word you are looking for is conformal coating but looking at the complete fan assembly is a push-fit then you will not be able to take it apart when the bearings fail so it will be a bin job
You mentioned about running on waste oil. This was something I was really interested in. But since purchased a Webasto water heater. Which starts and runs fine on 25% waste oil and diesel. But needs the fuel heating to run on 50% wo. Similar sort of products. Wouldn’t imagine you could get it to run on straight waste oil or veg oil unless the oil was heated quite high before going in
Yeah that's the problem. You'd have to heat the waste oil a lot and I don't know if the pump would last long pumping hot oil. If you had some sort of metal gear pump that didn't mind hot oil you might get away with it.
Or just heat the oil after the pump. The way I heated it was a coil of 3mm ID copper tube around the exhaust. More or less tubes depending on the temperature
In principle, you could - at the cost of more power - simply clamp a power resistor and regulator - similar to a 3d printer heater - around the steel fuel pipe inside the case. This would also allow it to start from cold perhaps.

I think the easiest solution would be to mix up a batch of dirty biodiesel. Just do something like 1 wash on it. Once the glycerine is out it should be thin enough to burn just fine.
13:45 works exactly like the webasto its copied off...but.. the burner tube and glowplug are a little different. webasto has its diesel pumped through a hole in the centre of a disk into a wire gauze pad, pad soaks up diesel, glowplug pressed against pad ignites evaporating diesel into airstream. wont burn veg, doesnt evaporate, gums up the pad, ruins it....lots of disassembly and brake cleaner to de-gum...
Eberspacher Glow plugs come with a special socket for fitting. Basically a Socket with a slice taken out the side. Glow plugs do fail over time and I can change mine without removing the whole unit from the van.
Also here you can change the glow plug without removing anything, you've only to open the upper black part to gain access to the glow plug that is below the red rubber cap (from 00:29 to 00:33 of this video) ;-)
It's easy enough to make your own slotted socket as well. Doesn't need to be heavy duty, since the glow plug does require much torque. I've used cheap plumbing fixture sockets and grinded out a slot. Made a spark plug socket for my old Harley Davidson flathead WLA that way. Otherwise, I needed to take the gas tank loose to change one of the spark plugs. Can't remember if it was the front one or the rear one? It was long, long ago.

You were talking about the espars having an air to water heat exchanger, you should try to make a computer radiator fit inside the plastic covering then plumb it to have a mini water heater as well!
Hi again also had me scratching my head for a long time and numerous lcd controllers and non lcd screen controllers,when I use my split charger in my van ie alternator the mother board does not seem to like over 14 volts it would give error 07 broken wire but I checked everything more times than I would care to mention then after useing split charger when battery was low so only 13 or so volts it would come back on,so I have put some diodes on my power lead to keep voltage under 14volts when split charge is on maybe you can run a test or maybe it’s just mine set low🙂
Hi what you been burning in it that tube is nice grey colour only been useing mine for just over a month had to strip down and clean it out full of black soot I’ve been useing road diesel straight out the pump🙂

Nice video David, I did the same with mine as soon as I got it. I have read on some forums that some people have not been happy with motor noise it makes which mine did when i got it. I noticed in the LCD settings that there is a setting for 1 or 2 magnets. mine came preset to 2 but when I checked the polarity of the magnets with my compass the were opposite so I set mine to 1 magnet and it now runs perfect. I am thinking that maybe the sensor only picks up one polarity so spins twice as fast as it should when set at 2 if the magnets are not installed with the same polarity . Do you think this may be correct. Thanks Terry
Is the glow plug only used for ignition (like a normal diesel engine) or stays it on during the combustion ? In a normal diesel engine you have compression which makes the heat for the combustion. How does it work with this kind of "engine" ?
Glow plug heats up a stainless steel mesh. Diesel is pumped onto the mesh and is vapourised by the heat. Once the heater is running and is hot enough to keep the fuel vapourised with the heat from the burn chamber the glow plug switches off. It briefly turns on during shutdown to help burn off any excess fuel.
I guess a tiny dynamo inside would keep the pump and fan going if power fails. There is a design flaw from the beginning in this tech. If it's the purpose of glowing a piece of steel you could make something more porose like a titanium mesh chamber. It would glow like in a minute. The rest is just academic.
Main power wire is 3.5 metres long. Wire to fuel pump is 2.5 metres and wire to controller is 2.5 metres. This is measured from the main plug they all attach to.
Can't believe the price and quality of these heaters and they seem simple to repair and maintain. I'm assuming the 2 KW, 3 KW and 5KW rated outputs are all the same machine as I can't see any difference in their specs, fuel consumption etc. apart from the stated output.
I think the only real difference between the 2kw and 5kw would be the glow plug. The 2kw version will run on 12v, the 5kw you need 24v. I would suspect everything else is the same. I would be interested in seeing if someone had a 2kw one (assuming it has a smaller colder running glow plug) if a bigger glow plug was installed if there would be a noticeable heat difference. Also I would be curious if these were fitted with an even larger one what would happen. I don't think it would be too hard to do the old dirty diesel resistor trick to make the pump PWM ramp way up, something like a hair dryer could be used for forced air induction. Could light on fire and melt at that point if it did work. Who knows what thermals these can take before failure.
It looks like the design will be very sensitive to the auto ignition temperature of the fuel oil. Diesel has an autoignition temperature of 256c. Vegetable oil (canola) self-combusts at 424c. Engine oil a little lower. Neither would probably light the combustion. Jet fuel and kerosene heating oil auto-ignite at a slightly lower temperature than diesel, so would be interesting to experiment with. Once started and hot, it may well run on engine oil or vegetable oil, but you'd need to switch back before shutdown to keep it primed. Dissolved incombustible solids in vegetable oil and engine oil whether used or not would likely leave excessive deposits requiring regular cleaning.
Question, why is it I have a 5kw heater and it cost me about £6.00 to fill the tank, I fill up at 4pm & by 8 am on 16 the lowest tick tock setting the tank is a quarter fill nerly empty I have 3 and there all the same . it seem to me its cheeper being at home with the gas & electric on.I hear these are cheep to run .I just wanted your opinion as you have good experience with these heaters, thanks
To R&R the glow plug without taking the unit apart, take a 12mm deep well socket and cut a slot up one side for the wires to come out. Like an 02 sensor socket you would use on a car. I have one of these things coming from eBay, not delivered yet. Planning to install it in my boat. The only way I can figure to route the exhaust outside through the fibreglass hull is to mount the thing right up against the hull with the tubes sticking out. The problem with that is now the fuel line would also be outside the hull and I don't want to do that. After watching this video I think it would work to cut the fuel pipe off inside the unit at the last bend, and connect the fuel line there so it would route out the side or top of the unit. Any ideas on that?
Could you get a piece of steel plate, drill two holes, weld in two steel pipes that fit inside the intake and exhaust pipes? Then make your holes in the hull, bond the plate over the area. That then leaves you to mount the heater and run the intake and exhaust pipes to the plate, but also should keep the hull relatively strong still and less likely to leak.
Well then, Why don't I just put a plenum around my lawn mower engine and blow air across it to heat the cabin? They are both internal combustion engines, I could also attach a generator to the shaft and get electricity too.

This is true. If I post a link from the eBay seller we purchased from you might still end up with a completely random unit from whoever the seller picks. Also sellers raise the price if the number of sales suddenly increases. There is an Amazon link the description as if there are problems at least you have the Amazon returns to fall back on.
How are these things "throttled" for low and high settings? Is it simply by varying the motor speed? The reduced flow of combustion air would account for a lower temperature in the burn chamber and accelerated soot buildup due to incomplete combustion. No reduction in fuel consumption though or do they also limit fuel input?
That hole allows a small amount of air into the vapourising mesh to start the combustion process. Assuming your heater isn't upside down I'd see if what the mesh looks like.
David any ideas on a water heat exchanger for these things ,I have a small splash pool for the kids it would be great to warm the water up .cheers Andy .
Yes, but it has to be a specific side up. If you take the top cover off so you can see the glowplug. You can put it on the side where the glowplug is still on the upper side. If you put it with the glowplug on the bottom it'll leak a little diesel.
I wonder can that inlet wheel handle heat. I`m planning to recover the exhaust heat and feed it back to the inlet to increase the efficiency like wallas and safire do

The combustion chamber heats that big aluminum heat sink. The fan at the heating air intake blows cold air over the heat sink thereby heating the air that comes out the heating air outlet.

I am running mine on 50/50 used veg oil and diesel. no smoke or start up problems at the moment. will keep playing about with ratios and se what happens and may include small amount of petrol . hope this helps
As someone who is here because he ran waste oil in his diesel heater...don't. It gums up the insides of the actual burn chamber and it's not serviceable.
The 2Kw version has a better control unit with Prime function (Pushing OFF button for 5 seconds). Btw, why not put the diesel tank higher than the heater, gravity will deliver all the diesel required. I almost could suggest getting rid of the pump entirely. I mean, I can redesign this (Burning chamber) from the ground up being self-sustaining, smaller and entirely without batteries. Consider a double wall burning chamber like your thermos coffee mug. Zippo Hand heaters use a mesh to burn fumes in a way it sustains the glow. That is what this should be (No glow-plug). By blowing air through the double chamber wall you create separate clean heated air. The more you feed fumes (heated gasified fuel) the hotter the (glowing) mesh (or titanium wool) gets heating up all metal around it including those containing fuel. In principle, you could design a compact fuel efficient self-sustaining tent heater blowing out cooled exhaust fumes from the (outside the tent) top of your tipi double wall tent pole, heated recycled air from below blowing down all the way from the (inside the tent) top collecting all the heat through the double wall pipe, all the size of a 1-liter soda bottle. You get my lightweight @ thoughts, right?
Robbert - the fuel pump does not provide a constant fuel pressure, it is there to deliver a precise amount of fuel each time it is activated - it is known as a "dosing pump". It has to be electrically controlled as the temperature sensor provides a feedback circuit which governs the speed at which the pump delivers a dose of fuel...

It's like a single combustor from a jet engine, it's got the injector and igniter as well like a jet engine does.

They have slotted sockets for things like that with a six sided base so one can use a crescent wrench to tighten.

You need a video on taking the motor apart that's where the problems are the bering go and the fans do come off with out a puller
I've sort of got one on changing the bearing in a 2KW but don't have a dedicated video on doing it. Might be an idea to do one. :)

did mine now its been working good for year I just regreast them I find that the shafts on the motor warp so it wobbles a bit not a wabasto for sure they can't seem to grease there bearings lol
You were talking about the espars having an air to water heat exchanger, you should try to make a computer radiator fit inside the plastic covering then plumb it to have a mini water heater as well!

Hi again also had me scratching my head for a long time and numerous lcd controllers and non lcd screen controllers,when I use my split charger in my van ie alternator the mother board does not seem to like over 14 volts it would give error 07 broken wire but I checked everything more times than I would care to mention then after useing split charger when battery was low so only 13 or so volts it would come back on,so I have put some diodes on my power lead to keep voltage under 14volts when split charge is on maybe you can run a test or maybe it’s just mine set low🙂
That is bizarre. I'll have to set it up again to test before we fit in camper and see what happens if I set the power supply to more than 14V.

Hi what you been burning in it that tube is nice grey colour only been useing mine for just over a month had to strip down and clean it out full of black soot I’ve been useing road diesel straight out the pump🙂
That's just been a bit of red diesel initially and the day I let it run all day was on kerosene.

Nice video David, I did the same with mine as soon as I got it. I have read on some forums that some people have not been happy with motor noise it makes which mine did when i got it. I noticed in the LCD settings that there is a setting for 1 or 2 magnets. mine came preset to 2 but when I checked the polarity of the magnets with my compass the were opposite so I set mine to 1 magnet and it now runs perfect. I am thinking that maybe the sensor only picks up one polarity so spins twice as fast as it should when set at 2 if the magnets are not installed with the same polarity . Do you think this may be correct. Thanks Terry

Is the glow plug only used for ignition (like a normal diesel engine) or stays it on during the combustion ? In a normal diesel engine you have compression which makes the heat for the combustion. How does it work with this kind of "engine" ?
Glow plug heats up a stainless steel mesh. Diesel is pumped onto the mesh and is vapourised by the heat. Once the heater is running and is hot enough to keep the fuel vapourised with the heat from the burn chamber the glow plug switches off. It briefly turns on during shutdown to help burn off any excess fuel.
i would put an external fuel filter on it to keep that screen clean for as long as possible
You'r absolutely right. It does actually come with one in the box and I should have mentioned it.
I guess a tiny dynamo inside would keep the pump and fan going if power fails. There is a design flaw from the beginning in this tech. If it's the purpose of glowing a piece of steel you could make something more porose like a titanium mesh chamber. It would glow like in a minute. The rest is just academic.

Main power wire is 3.5 metres long. Wire to fuel pump is 2.5 metres and wire to controller is 2.5 metres. This is measured from the main plug they all attach to.

Can't believe the price and quality of these heaters and they seem simple to repair and maintain. I'm assuming the 2 KW, 3 KW and 5KW rated outputs are all the same machine as I can't see any difference in their specs, fuel consumption etc. apart from the stated output.
I think the only real difference between the 2kw and 5kw would be the glow plug. The 2kw version will run on 12v, the 5kw you need 24v. I would suspect everything else is the same. I would be interested in seeing if someone had a 2kw one (assuming it has a smaller colder running glow plug) if a bigger glow plug was installed if there would be a noticeable heat difference. Also I would be curious if these were fitted with an even larger one what would happen. I don't think it would be too hard to do the old dirty diesel resistor trick to make the pump PWM ramp way up, something like a hair dryer could be used for forced air induction. Could light on fire and melt at that point if it did work. Who knows what thermals these can take before failure.

It looks like the design will be very sensitive to the auto ignition temperature of the fuel oil. Diesel has an autoignition temperature of 256c.
Vegetable oil (canola) self-combusts at 424c. Engine oil a little lower. Neither would probably light the combustion.
Jet fuel and kerosene heating oil auto-ignite at a slightly lower temperature than diesel, so would be interesting to experiment with.
Once started and hot, it may well run on engine oil or vegetable oil, but you'd need to switch back before shutdown to keep it primed.
Dissolved incombustible solids in vegetable oil and engine oil whether used or not would likely leave excessive deposits requiring regular cleaning.
That'll be why in another youtube video I watched of a guy switching over to veg oil it just went out.
Question, why is it I have a 5kw heater and it cost me about £6.00 to fill the tank, I fill up at 4pm & by 8 am on 16 the lowest tick tock setting the tank is a quarter fill nerly empty I have 3 and there all the same . it seem to me its cheeper being at home with the gas & electric on.I hear these are cheep to run .I just wanted your opinion as you have good experience with these heaters, thanks
Are you buying pump diesel from the petrol station? At the moment mains gas is still the cheapest heat source followed by heating oil.
If you want to use diesel heater to heat water simply wrap copper pipe around the exhaust

Only difference i can see between these and expensive units is the expensive ones use a brushless motor
To R&R the glow plug without taking the unit apart, take a 12mm deep well socket and cut a slot up one side for the wires to come out. Like an 02 sensor socket you would use on a car. I have one of these things coming from eBay, not delivered yet. Planning to install it in my boat. The only way I can figure to route the exhaust outside through the fibreglass hull is to mount the thing right up against the hull with the tubes sticking out. The problem with that is now the fuel line would also be outside the hull and I don't want to do that. After watching this video I think it would work to cut the fuel pipe off inside the unit at the last bend, and connect the fuel line there so it would route out the side or top of the unit. Any ideas on that?
Could you get a piece of steel plate, drill two holes, weld in two steel pipes that fit inside the intake and exhaust pipes? Then make your holes in the hull, bond the plate over the area. That then leaves you to mount the heater and run the intake and exhaust pipes to the plate, but also should keep the hull relatively strong still and less likely to leak.

This is true. If I post a link from the eBay seller we purchased from you might still end up with a completely random unit from whoever the seller picks. Also sellers raise the price if the number of sales suddenly increases. There is an Amazon link the description as if there are problems at least you have the Amazon returns to fall back on.

How are these things "throttled" for low and high settings? Is it simply by varying the motor speed? The reduced flow of combustion air would account for a lower temperature in the burn chamber and accelerated soot buildup due to incomplete combustion. No reduction in fuel consumption though or do they also limit fuel input?
Fuel input is also limited, the fuel pump would run slower putting less fuel into the chamber
The fuel pump slows as does fan speed.
what is the hole in the housing beside the fuel inlet? i have fuel leaking from it. is it and air intake for combustion?
That hole allows a small amount of air into the vapourising mesh to start the combustion process. Assuming your heater isn't upside down I'd see if what the mesh looks like.
David any ideas on a water heat exchanger for these things ,I have a small splash pool for the kids it would be great to warm the water up .cheers Andy .

Yes, but it has to be a specific side up. If you take the top cover off so you can see the glowplug. You can put it on the side where the glowplug is still on the upper side. If you put it with the glowplug on the bottom it'll leak a little diesel.

The combustion chamber heats that big aluminum heat sink. The fan at the heating air intake blows cold air over the heat sink thereby heating the air that comes out the heating air outlet.

As someone who is here because he ran waste oil in his diesel heater...don't. It gums up the insides of the actual burn chamber and it's not serviceable.
The 2Kw version has a better control unit with Prime function (Pushing OFF button for 5 seconds). Btw, why not put the diesel tank higher than the heater, gravity will deliver all the diesel required. I almost could suggest getting rid of the pump entirely. I mean, I can redesign this (Burning chamber) from the ground up being self-sustaining, smaller and entirely without batteries. Consider a double wall burning chamber like your thermos coffee mug. Zippo Hand heaters use a mesh to burn fumes in a way it sustains the glow. That is what this should be (No glow-plug). By blowing air through the double chamber wall you create separate clean heated air. The more you feed fumes (heated gasified fuel) the hotter the (glowing) mesh (or titanium wool) gets heating up all metal around it including those containing fuel. In principle, you could design a compact fuel efficient self-sustaining tent heater blowing out cooled exhaust fumes from the (outside the tent) top of your tipi double wall tent pole, heated recycled air from below blowing down all the way from the (inside the tent) top collecting all the heat through the double wall pipe, all the size of a 1-liter soda bottle. You get my lightweight @ thoughts, right?

Robbert - the fuel pump does not provide a constant fuel pressure, it is there to deliver a precise amount of fuel each time it is activated - it is known as a "dosing pump". It has to be electrically controlled as the temperature sensor provides a feedback circuit which governs the speed at which the pump delivers a dose of fuel...
