Croatia ESC Selection (Dora) 2020 Top 16 With Comments (After Show)

- This is actually a big step up in quality from last year's show. Croatia actually had some options!
I think the song they chose limits them with regards what they can expect in terms of Eurovision result but I do like and appreciate what they chose. I will listen to it.

Zovi ju mama - there are pot plants for a reason: if you noticed, there is a device attached near those plants and DJ guy, it looks like a cellphone but it isn't. Well, that device is called Bamboo and it can turn frequency of the plants in the sound we can hear. So, plants have actually a big role here and the song's message is really powerfull.
That is actually really, really cool.
I mean, at ESC, it would rely on the commentators explain that to the different TV audiences but yeah, that would have made me really interested.
My new top 16 of Dora 2020:
1. Damir Kedžo: Divlji vjetre - 7.5/10
2. Alen Vitasović & Božidarka Matija Čerina: Da se ne zatare - 6.5/10
3. Colonia: Zidina - 6.5/10
4. Mia Negovetić: When It Comes to You - 6.5/10
5. Edi Abazi: Coming Home - 6/10
6. Bojan Jambrošić: Više od riječi - 6/10
7. Jure Brkljača: Hajde, nazovi me - 6/10
8. Aklea Neon: Zovi ju mama - 5.5/10
9. Zdenka Kovačiček: Love Love Love - 5.5/10
10. Lorena Bućan: Drowning - 5/10
11. Indira Levak: You Will Never Break My Heart - 4/10
12. Lorenzo, Dino Purić & Reper iz Sobe: Vrati se iz Irske - 4/10
13. Đana: One - 4/10
14. Marin Jurić Čivro: Naivno - 4/10
15. Nikola Marjanović: Let's Forgive - 3/10
16. Elis Lovrić: Jušto - 3/10
NF Average - 5.18, quite higher than 2019, yet under both 2021 and 2022 (we are in an upward spiral, thankfully).
- Looking back, Divlji vjetre is a really solid song, with a strong structure, and I think it deservingly won the NF. By far the best song here. Other than that, I had issues in sorting them out, as there's not much I actively dislike, but not much to stand out either. It was a really middle ground selection, with most of the songs being either pleasant background music or unusual stuff that misses the polish to be actually competitive.
My re-ranking also has Damir comfortably being the winner of this national final with a solid 7.0 rating. Your 2nd place is my last place though as I remember it being an all-time bad live performance in term of vocal. Sorry about that!
My top three is Damir, Mia and Colonia. So I guess once we take that one out, we're pretty similar in where we think the quality songs are. My 4th place is actually Dorotea and I gave it a rather healthy looking 6.0. Maybe, I was caught on a generous day?
I also had Elis getting a 3.0 but unfortunately, where as that got her last place in your ranking, I had another SIX songs below that.
This is a better selection than 2019...but that doesn't mean it's a good selection. My overall rating for the selection was a pitiful 4.28 (though this is considerably higher than the Belarus selection - including auditions - that I did before it).
@@kaleproject3495 I'm usually a bit more generous one with my ratings, but no matter the system one uses, Moldovan and Belarusian auditions will always be ranked lowest on average. Abundance of songs, mostly underproduced and sung out of tune. Even if there are a few gems, they'll be significantly outnumbered. 🤣
I actually fully understand your dislike of Da se ne zatare. To be fair, Alen was vocally pretty weak. He should have given that spot to a singer whose energy matched Božidarka's. She was great. Aside from being different, the song's biggest asset are the lyrics. It's about preserving the local cultural herritage. I like the package overall, even if Alen brought it down with his performance.
Glad we agree on Damir, Colonia and Mia. Damir is actually now my 18th in the 2020 ranking.
As you see with my ratings, a lot of 4 - 6.5s. It was a struggle finding my 2nd-onward in order. Not as much as finding my 3rd in 2019, though. 🤣
03. When It Comes to You
02. One
01. Drowing
Drowning had promise. I really think with a few more weeks, they could've made fixes to it and made it a stronger contender here.
My favorite songs are You Will Never Break My Heart, Zidina and Zovi Ju Mama. I'm completely agree with your first place.
I hope you also agree that this was a big improvement on last year!
I don't mind the winner actually. I think it won't do well but I like it.
Više od riječi guy also sang Share the Love in Dora 2021
Lol
Haha. I noticed that. I remember thinking he looked a bit like a rougher Gergő Szekér (a bit, just a little bit). 😂
He also sung that ballad in 2019 with another woman. The man has been sending awful entries 3 years in a row. Maybe he should stop
@@youraveragelanadelreystan It's safe to say that he definitely has a style. 😂
To be fair, none of these match the awfulness of the 2021 entry.
Bland, generic ballad won. There were better songs. Like your number 1 and 2
I can understand people thinking it's a bit bland. I like it but even I can see that it doesn't have a lot of mass appeal.
same winner. I really can't understand the Croatian people... lol
We Croatians love balladas.
And they often win.
It was the first one in the running order to really make me think Croatia could qualify from the ESC SF. Their winner is such an acquired taste.
Wrong first place DAMIR KEDŽO second MIA NEGOVETIĆ third place INDIRA
They're all pretty high up in my list so I wasn't that far off! 😂
yeah ofc you don't like da se ne zatare bc you are probably used to only hear ballads
I've listened to every NF song since 2012.
There have been some non-ballads in there. 😂
Hahaha. Who choose places do not have clue about music.
It must be nice to be the bastion of good taste. 🤣
Awful selection...
As someone who had to make a video for Dora last year, I can tell you, I really appreciate the improvement this year. 😂
@@kaleproject3495
Yes this is better than last year, but it's still bad
@@vincentesc Baby steps. Give it another three years and they might have something good!
@@kaleproject3495 This aged well
@@JH3Eurovision I like this year's selection!
