SMART Program is a social group program offered by Nationwide Children's Hospital. The program teaches children with Autism and Autism-related disorders the fundamental social skills necessary to build and maintain relationships. It is comprised of toddler, preschool, elementary and middle school children with a 14-year-old age limit. Watch this video to learn more.

this really calms me down because my 3 year old brother is autistic and he does not know how to talk, and the way he communicates with us is he will grab our hand and take us to whatever he is trying to get or wants to use, and its really hard because it sucks that i cant have a full blown conversation with my brother because he does not know how to talk and does not understand us so its hard, but watching this video really made me understand more about this disability.
In case your brother has problems with the speech sounds, you might look into Sign Language (that's very good for youngsters of all types, as you can sign things way before you can say them clearly), or even get a board with common words on it for him to point to -- pictures of the food he wants or the people or animals he's talking about or things he needs or whatever. There have been cases of fully mute children who seem to be not interacting with the world to be later revealed to have a rich inner life when they're given the right tools to express themselves, and of course if your brother is already communicating in some way then it's more likely he'd be able to make use of tools like that.

Well...I am all for giving kids all the resources and help they can to achieve their best selves. But I worry about a lot of programs designed to "help" autistic kids. Many, though good intentioned, are based on biased research (most research prior to the early 2000's is extremely biased) and doesn't take into account the opinions and advice of those of us who are actually autistic. Like ABA. Which is widely recognized in autistic circles to be basically child abuse. Intended as helpful. But totally disregarding the fact that how we communicate is different not wrong. Not that we don't need to adjust a bit to live well in a neurotypical world. But neurotypical people should also be taught to communicate with us. I mean...we shouldn't have to be the ones constantly changing who we are to accomodate the rest especially if who we are is more of a help than a hinderance to society. I mean, autistic minds have been behind most of the advances and inventions of our entire history. We have always been here and we always will and we are super useful and important to societies. We need to invest in lots of programs that help autistic kids be the best AUTISTIC KIDS they can be. Not be like neurotypicals.
So many times in the desparation for parents to want their kids to be 'normal' and to have the same motivators and joys that the parents do...it can diminish the spark in us that makes us so wonderful. When we are so busy trying to be normal we don't get to expand and explore the unique parts of ourselves that are the very parts the worlds needs of us. I don't know enough about this program in the video to have an opinion on it either way. It looks an aweful lot like all the ABA based ones and what not....and there are some good things in those. But...it didn't address the fact that the people best suited to work with autistic kids is autistic adults. Especially those of us who are 'high functioning' like me who can be a great translation tool between a neurotypical and autistic way of communicating. Especially because a lot of the reasons why we do stuff is not understood by people who haven't experienced it. For example wearing noise cancelling headphones. I worked at a school that said they provided them for the kids that needed them but most were just normal headphones. And they were not offered unless it was a loud event. But...people don't realize it isn't always about volume. I wear noise cancelling headphones/ear plugs and it has nothing to do with decibles. It's about hearing too many noises and not being able to focus well. I wear mine often when it would seem quiet to other people. It's little things like that that is best helped by having a lot of autistic staff in these places. We are more than capable of helping our fellow atypical's out. For many of us it is a passion. I would like to see more therapy programs that actively recruit autistic employees and grant us the decency of having our own voices heard.

Why don’t you do it. Start your own School and teach people what it’s like. Create your own teaching program. You can be the enlightening perspective society needs to understand Autism. And don’t focus on or get discouraged by labels ... everything in life is labeled. I don’t believe in diseases. I believe conditions exist In reaction to circumstances.There are patterns and humans are good at labeling and categorizing patterns of all things but if society would just go beyond the patterns and realize the underlying causes for the reactions people have to circumstances the progress for helping people cope would be amazing. like for example the extra sensory to noise you talk about , perhaps even there could be something biologically available to equalize ones sensory when they are hyper sensitive beyond a medication. I believe movement helps everything but only you would know, perhaps there are other ways to adjust ones perception of the senses. I get super distracted when I have to focus on taking an exam and people whisper or talk.. I can’t focus. I don’t have autism but Everyone has something. Dont single yourself out by societies labels. Labels mean nothing they are used only to classify patterns. Neuro typical is also ... a label that is unnecessary. Who is typical truly in our society? Nobody. Everyone has a different perception of the world and how they learn. Great comment.
Autism is not natural so of course its regarded as such. I agree that its important to understand people with certain conditions need different types of communication and help. However, the fact remains that 90% of the world (correct me if I am wrong) is not autistic. It is much better to teach an autistic child how to function in the world rather than let the condition get worse. The biggest reason for this is because the world and everyday people are not going to know how to deal with an autistic person. Especially one who has not received help via a type of program that teaches them how to communicate with everyday normal functioning people. In terms of autistic adults helping autistic children, that is like the blind leading the blind. Autistic adults may be able to help provide comfort to autistic children but an autistic adult cannot teach an autistic child how to function more normal because they them selves were born with an abnormal condition. Another analogy would be a child trying to teach another child something it does not know anything about.

I was actually diagnosed with Autism when I was 3 and I remember that when I was in Kindergarten, we did this thing called "Reins of Hope" and we'd get to ride horses!! It was fun!

My sister is currently 2 years old and she was diagnosed with autism today :( but I don't see her as different at all I would say she is incredibly gifted and very smart for her age as well however she likes to isolate herself from everyone else but I see that her mind works best when she's alone

This looks like a wonderful program using research-based strategies. You CAN teach kids with autism to interact socially, communicate appropriately, and develop good friendship skills. I know because I have done it myself, both as a mom and as an ABA therapist.

Socially we have issues but in other areas are brain can work better than most normal people like remembering things others forget. But I think there needs be allot more work done. It's all highly variable and depends on the individual. I have crap social skills, organization, etc for the most part but in other areas I seem to surpass others greatly. You have to find and hone your interests.

I have autism and anxiety but people know me better than I am now because I'm turning 16 next year and my family and friends are coming to my 16th birthday party and we gonna have a disco and party food and stuff and dancing and drinking and we are going to have lots of fun and when I'm 19 and I am going to leave school and go to college and study law sociology and business and technology and social media studies and I'm going to university and I think university is particularly good for me because I focused on my strengths and gsce I particularly know how maths was a bit difficult and for a example and I struggled at gcse and my family and friends are going to be so proud and I'm just really proud of myself

I had huge “regulation” issues as a child and I “naturally” improved without special education.
Every child needs to be taught something that other children can naturally regulate. This is what makes us unique, gifted, and special.
I didn’t need to be taught how to discern circumstances as a kid, but I did need help with regulating my emotions and developing healthy expectations. I had huge tantrums and fell on the ground, etc.
If I was growing up in this time, I would be considered high functioning autism and be unfairly labeled as disabled. Here’s the irony, my emotional IQ today is higher than people who didn’t grow up with my delayed development. Again, this happened for me naturally. No special education.
The bottom line is this: There is no spectrum. One either has the disability or not.
Since scientist and teachers cannot discern the difference between the lack of an ability versus the delayed development of the brain has created the booming business of the Austin Spectrum.
However, many parents have been fighting back realizing the buffoonery and the mislabeling, especially diagnosing too early in the child’s development stage.
A new rule of thumb is to wait until First Grade. But, that’s if you see no growth.
My son is five and I have friends/teachers who are trying to pin the label on him, when he is really just an apple that fell very close to my roots.
I know he can regulate himself emotionally because he does so, when he is on discipline. All of a sudden, those “so called” symptoms will disappear, when he’s sent to his room for a few moments.
I know my son’s personality more than even his mother. The goal is to study your child and really determine for yourself, is this your child’s personality or is this a disability.
Also, measure the growth of your child. If there is improvement, then don’t worry about the delay. Every child is delayed in some area of their development. Eventually, children will catch up in his/her own time. Not on the time of teachers and scientists. It may not be until near adult age before the child catches up, such as in my case. And now, I’ve surpassed most.
Parents know their children best. So, let’s not throw our parental intuition down the drain and allow a bunch of lobbyists and scientists to change the label of “late bloomer” to “high functioning autism.”

@Kl MOHAMED INAYATH Yes. These are my personal experiences and from research. I do not take what everyone or entity prescribes to me as well. Instead, I listen to everyone and then I apply what I learn against my experiences.
Basically, my good friend, you are the parent and it is your job to make the accurate assessment of your child's development. Some cases are more obvious than others.
You will know as a parent. You will know, if your child is truly having developmental issues. If you are leaning in that direction, then go and get help immediately. But, if you are having doubts, then hold back and get more facts; and study your child.
Again, If YOU believe your child is not developing appropriately or is not developing at all, then by all means, get your child tested by a professional.
Note: When you go to a teacher or doctor and mention that "you believe" your child is having an issue, then guess what, your teach or doctor will be biased in their testing to support your claim. They will attempt to prove your claim to be right; thus the "Spectrum." Instead of saying yes or no, your child has an issue, these doctors and teachers forced the disability on each child tested. I bet this testing has a 100% success rate placing children in the spectrum. For an example: If your child spins in circles and also repeats words, however, everything else is normal or advanced. Your child could be placed as high functioning autism. That is an oxymoron. A well-to-do disabled person??? Huh?? How about, your child is fine. He or She is still developing and all humans develop at different rates.
Just keep this in mind, not all children will develop at the same time. Your child may be more advanced in some areas than others.
For an example: My son is not on the same social level as his peers. However, he has improved in that area, naturally. So, therefore, I do not believe he is disabled. He is only growing at his own pace. Now, let's compare his math skills against his peers. My five year old boy is more advanced than his peers. Why aren't the professionals labeling his peers with a mental disorder, since they can't add 5 + 3? My son can perform this task in writing and in his head. He can do this with subtraction as well.
The philosophy is hypocritical. Delayed social development is considered a disability, but delayed logical development (math) is considered average. ???
You must understand, in our culture, majority of people in America grow up and still complain about how difficult math was and is. So, when we see this in our children we can all relate as a culture. But, when we see that children are not social as we like them to be, then we call that a disability. Simply because, we as a culture in America believe being social should be easy or easier than understanding math and logic. The misnomer is real.
Do your own studying of your child and be an advocate, until YOU have enough evidence to go in either direction.
Final note: Notice how the title of this post mentions "...Treating Autism and AUTISM RELATED..."
The clue is in the context. Every child and toddler in their development has a related characteristic of Autism.

Im on the autistic spectrum, I'm so glad I am on the high functioning end. I have built computers, when I'm only 15, thanks to my research in that area. @@morrisdonald8795 Maybe it wasn't "autism" in the first place. It's a catch-all term these days that describes any communication disorder or developmental delay. Temple Grandin is extremely intelligent, articulate and accomplished professional who has written books on the subject of autism - and her experience of it. She succeeded in spite of it, but she will always be autistic.

My child is 3years 9mts seems disinterested in regular play with others. She avoids eye contact with everyone except me.. as i take care of her
She is uninterested in writing drawing etc.. likes looking at pictures and loves the ipad rhymes like coco melon. A young child should never be put in medications as they are developing , and using it as a substitute of teaching children with a hard effort behavior , self regulation, and dealing with stress.
