  • Jesse, who was born blind in Korea and adopted at age 2, heads to the doctor for a regular appointment with Mom and Dad. In addition to being blind, Jesse is autistic, non-verbal, and has intellectual disabilities. She also does not eat "table food" regularly, other than mountains of Cheerios and her daily prescribed amount of Pediasure, ordered by her nutritionist and doctor, who we are seeing today. We are VERY thankful that Jesse receives her daily sustenance this way and not through a feeding tube.
    We have been told by some of our doctor specialists, that there is not an established and reliable "diagnostic test" to identify and diagnose "Autism Spectrum Disorder" in a patient who is both blind and intellectually disabled, as Jesse is. One of the reasons we recorded quite a bit of this video is to document her interactions and behaviors, which are clearly very typical ASD symptoms.

      -Gradually stir in flour & cook till golden brown.
      -Whisk half & half in increments.
      -Add chicken stock, bay leaves & nutmeg.
      -Season with salt & pepper to desired taste.
      -Bring pot to simmer, stirring occasionally.

      My pleasure! 🧡 I found the recipe online & made a few alterations. Depending on her taste, you can make it whatever texture she's accustomed to. & by using half & half or evaporated milk, however rich or savory she likes. Hope she likes it. You could also slip some potato, squash, or parsnips in & she'd never know the difference. 👍😉

    So as you probably noticed lol I'm really fascinated by Jesse's musical abilities (I play a couple instruments and also did some research on savant case studies for a class I took at NYU, children with these talents can provide some amazing insights into the intricacies of the human brain). I would agree that, given her ability to sing in tune and also to switch between keys with no musical training whatsoever, she probably does has some natural absolute or "perfect" pitch ability. Usually when you see someone with this talent they've been able to refine it through a lot of formal training and practice which Jesse doesn't have, but I'll bet she's able to do stuff like pitch-matching (singing back the exact tone of everyday sounds like sirens and doorbells).
    There are two things that might make her statistically more predisposed to this than the general population. One, absolute pitch is more common in individuals who are totally blind from birth, usually from an optic nerve disorder; I know Jesse's impairment is the result of hyperoxia secondary to prematurity (ROP) and not an issue with the nerve itself, but since in practice she has never had any functional vision and no light perception or anything, then the correlation is probably valid. And two (and I'm not sure about this one but just thought I'd mention) absolute pitch is more common among people whose first language was highly tonal - for example Cantonese, Vietnamese, Thai, etc. If Jesse had any early exposure to these languages as a young child that would be another strong indicator...I know she is ethnically Korean which is not really a tonal language, but I wasn't sure what her foster background might have been like. Just a thought.
    Something else I notice that's also really interesting is that she seems to have a natural vibrato, which usually is something else that has to be formally learned - for example most children don't do that when they're first learning to sing, they just produce the straight tone (like imagine you're just humming a song from the radio or a nursery rhyme, you wouldn't sing "Twinkle Twinkle" with a nice even operatic vibrato unless you were specifically thinking about it lol). I noticed Jesse doing this around 11:01 and was really surprised, I don't think I've ever heard anyone do this without having at least some structured musical or vocal training.
    Most people with perfect pitch describe it as being less of a musical talent and more sort of along the lines of a "categorization" ability the way we can immediately unconsciously identify a certain color as being orange or purple or blue without having to hunt for the word, and obviously this relies on the ability to memorize and recall these arbitrary categories. Because Jesse is nonverbal and so she can't verbally identify a reference note like F♯ or B♭ it would be a bit harder to determine for certain whether she has this ability, but I think the evidence is pretty compelling. It's clear her songs follow a musical structure with distinct phrases and sub-phrases that she can repeat consistently and in multiple different keys...it would be soooo interesting for a musicologist to study her repertoire and try to identify any correlations between certain keys and melodic phrases and themes, and things like emotions or other kinds of information she might be trying to convey.
    Anyway, sorry for the novel! Thank you for sharing your beautiful daughter and her talent with the world! 💕🎵

      OMG....SARAH!! We are printing your comment and sending this to every single educator and medical professional working with Jesse. I can't get anyone to understand what you have so eloquently stated!!! THANK YOU!! We have spent countless thousands of dollars on psychologists who haven't taken half the interest you have! I am literally crying with joy right now to think that a perfect stranger cares this much to take an interest in our daughter!!! Please do not ever lose this passion you have!
      An even bigger issue than perfect pitch which absolutely, positively MUST be related to the savant tendency is the fact that Jesse has been labeled as ID and never gets credit for the intelligence she does have because these people who know so much just poo-poo the ASD !!!! It is so far beyond frustrating for us. We fight and fight and fight to explain, but burn out gets the better of us.
      I guess it takes a fresh, passionate student to help me find my ability to articulate this! This one comment makes it worth the effort to build this channel. We need help with these issues. Casting the wider net has brought you to us. We are grateful!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤

      jesse’s singing is also her main form of stimming. I notice her sing for stimming purposes alot and depending on what she is experiencing her tempo, key, and choice of song will change in a similar way to if she was stimming by handflapping or lip picking etc. Stimming is a very important form of communication for autistic people, especially nonverbal.I’m not non-verbal (but sometimes selective mute in certain social situations or due to overload) and I have different stims for happy (hand flapping), anxious (pulling and fidgeting with my lips and mouth), increasing anxiety/heading for meltdown (tapping head, biting back of hand - like Jesse), and more. I sing and vocalise alot for stimming to. If its positive stimming I sing melodies, repeating the same phrase over and over, I’ll make up phrases, echo sounds or tunes I hear eg sirens, jingles from adverts etc. If i’m anxious my vocal stims become more glutteral, minor key based, more monotonous or less melodic, faster tempo and sound more distressed. I was non verbal during early childhood and eventually learned to speak but when non verbal i started teaching myself music. I taught myself piano age four. I had a keyboard and heard a tv show theme tune on tv and repeated on my keyboard, my parents realised then that musically something was different for me. I became facinated with music and music was everything for me. I learnt to play lots of instruments myself without any tuition or even basic music lessons at school and none of my close or wider family are musical. I spent all my time in my bedroom singing, and i started singing lessons at 14 but already had a very large reptoire of songs, and an establised natural vibrato. (I didnt know that this wasnt something people naturally have?). I mimic other siingers so was belting out big diva songs despite being tiny and having no correct breathing technique.
      Anyway, my point of my comment is to add to the original poster that singing is very probably Jesses main form of communication. She’s telling you she is happy, anxious, struggling to cope with sensory overload, heading for a meltdown, needs help, wants to be left alone and communicating her basic needs with her songs. She’s probably also stimming with her singing for her own purposes to manage her anxiety (autistic people live with constant anxiety and anxiety is the basis of most of our behaviours. Stimming helps us regulate this by blocking out extra sensory infomation, calming our nervous system down, reducing the flight or fight response, and can even help us prevent a meltdown if we arent interupted or other sensory infomation is added on top eg hugging us or touching us or talking to us to try to calm us can often have the opposite effect during a meltdown). It wouldn’t surprise me if Jesse had ASMR response to music and certain tones given how she suddenly stops and freezes and listens so intently to certain sounds and repeats certain notes herself. ASMR has become a bit misrepresented due to its popularity as a relaxation technique online but in reality jot many people have true ASMR responses at neurological level. Its kinda like synethesia where someone may see colours when they hear music, or smell fish when they hear the number five for example. In ASMR certain notes, tones, colours of visual textures create this very intense sensation which starts at the top of the scalp and runs down the scalp, down the soine, down the arms and legs and basically is an intense pleasurable sensation (like when people get good goosebumps when they hear someone sing, someone with ASMR their whole body feels it 1000x stronger but it starts at top of head and waves down the whole body). Its not typically something that makes you feel relaxed and fall aslepp like the asmr trend makes out and peoole using asmr videos to fall sleep to. In true ASMR the person doesnt know they will be trigged and it suddenly happens with a certain note and it is so intense it stops you in your tracks and you will try to repeat hearing that trigger note to expeoremce the sensation over and over. I find Jesse facinating because there are alot of my autistic experiences I see in her so I feel connected to Jesse the most.

    • @SixBlindKids
      @SixBlindKids  5 років тому +51

      Technically, you are exactly correct. We recently had a psychologist say that exact thing to us when we tried to have diagnostic testing done for her Autism. He said she does exhibit certain savant like characteristics, ie. singing. If you notice when she does sing or hum a song, it is on key and she even plugs correct words into the correct spot on occassion, which is pretty remarkable. Unfortunately, it seems nobody has developed a reliable enough test to administer to someone who is blind, intellectually disabled, and autistic. As Jesse's parents, we continue to believe that Autism is her primary disability. (Autism is a spectrum and the various parts of Autism are as well. Savant does not neccessarily mean a person is genius, and Jesse would be low on that particular spectrum as she only has savant like "tendencies"). Thank you for a great comment! 😊💕

So after they had cooled I just slipped them right out of their skins and put them on a plate. I reached into the fridge for the cream and butter. My son had just started to toddle. He was a little old but YES! He had these sweet potatoes on the floor on the plate chowing them down. I sat on the floor and cried. I love how she uses music to communicate how she feels. Her singing voice is beautiful by the way. This hits me on a personal level too because my cousin has severe autism and is also nonverbal. He is mostly in his own world and loves listening to things on his phone. Every now and then you’d hear him let out a high pitched sound that sounds almost like a cheer and he smiles a lot too. Live concerts are where he is truly happy. I never really speak verbal words with him but I feel like we connect through our love for UA-cam and other phone platforms😊The Corona pandemic hit him and his family especially hard since live concerts were canceled. Nearly violent lash outs were common in the family during that time apparently.😔

    • @andreastokes1521
      @andreastokes1521 4 роки тому +1

      I think they would be great friends. We live in Baltimore, MD and it seems there is no one that we can identify with in the community or even our own family. None of my friends or family have never been exposed to a person let alone a child with special needs. There are many times that I've been criticized for feeding her what she likes to eat which are not typical foods that a child should probably eat every day, but she is very selective and those foods are the only ones she will eat. My daughter does not like her hair being brushed or combed or even touched for that matter. When she was younger it was easy to put her in a high chair and comb and brush her hair, but as she got older and stronger it became very difficult to the point that I cut her hair off because she was starting to rip it from the roots when she would get angry and the hair that existed was becoming matted to her head. I was called lazy because of the choice that I thought was best foe my daughter. I apologize for venting like this, but I have never been able to connect with people who have a similar journey as ours. Thank you💗❤

    When I was a kid I made sounds and swung my head. I liked the way the sounds changed. It's common with autism. Although I showed many signs of autism since age three I wasn't diagnosed til I was in my twenties. I am moderate on the spectrum. At times of stress I am more severe while less stress I am more mild. When I write people don't tell I have a hard time communicating because writing is easier than talking. I relate to Abbi when she has a hard time getting words out. It's even harder when people don't understand that it's hard to talk sometime. I love how patient you all are with the kids. It makes it so much easier when there's patience.

      Thank you Angela! 😊 When Jesse gets going, she can really sing, but she is hard to catch! I have recently realized that the ding on my camera makes her stop and listen to me. I need to find a way to turn that off so you guys can hear more! It is quite remarkable! 😉😊💕🎤🎶

    I don't have the Uno recipe. But, I use Deer Creek soup mixture which I buy in grocery store . I just add shredded mild cheddar cheese and additional broccoli florets or when I feel lazy I buy raw broccoli slaw mix ( shredded carrots included.) It's done in minutes!!! I always get lots of complements too! Plus Deer Creek has other soup flavors.
    Happy cooking!

    That is so awesome she ate the soup, it is such a great thing when you find something she likes and now you can continue to let her eat it as much as she wants.. amazing how many triggers they have, and all the kids have different ones. But you guys have so much love and patience and you guys work with each and every one of them individually and they are making such awesome progress. I know this is last year video, and to see her now it is so awesome.. I love you guys so much.. Praying for you all.. God bless you all.

    Jesse is so very lucky to have you both. I can see how loved she is, and well taken care of. I have very thick bushy hair like her, can I recommend you ask her hairdresser to add some shorter layers all around. The layering will take away some of the puff!! BLESS YOU ALL!!

    I believe the songs that Jesse was singing that were unfamiliar to you may have been Korean songs Jesse may have heard before she was adopted, and remembered them, as I could hear some Korean words when she was singing a few times. She a great singer, and her vibrato is beautiful! Much love to Jesse and your family! ❤❤❤

    What if you practice weighing her at home? And she gets a reward she really likes when she does it? Could you transfer that to the doctors office?

      tams mac yeah some de-sensitisation work could be incredibly valuable. I saw in another video Jesse (and her hair) sits in a wheelchair, wondering if the doctors have accessible scales or seated scales available? I expect this is something they have already checked out though, they seem SUPER organised and aware.

    I was literally on the edge of my seat waiting to see her response to the soup. When she said "yummy" and took another bite, I was like YAY JESSE!!!! What a great moment/milestone! I bet if you talked to the owner and told them what was going on, they'd probably give you the recipe

    • @SixBlindKids
      @SixBlindKids  5 років тому +6

      Did We miss her saying Yummy?! Omg..I need to watch again! She will, on occassion, say a word in context. She did say cold going into docs office, but it is impossible to hear on the video. You have to trust us on that one! 😉😂🤣 I did find a mock recipe online. I'm going to try it today (hopefully) to see if she will eat it. If not, I doubt it will go to waste! Haha! You are spot on about her singing..pretty amazing stuff imo..💖💖💖

      @@SixBlindKids The "yummy" sound to me was right after your husband said it, around 50 seconds, and then again around a minute. Maybe it was just her singing or making sounds, but that's what I took it as :P
      I did catch her saying certain words while at the doctors office...especially "go" haha she was ready to leave lol. She is such a precious little girl and she def knows how loved she is
