This is really making me realise how terrible the art classes I took in my first few years of high school were. Nothing about perspective, nothing about actual colour theory, nothing about proper draftsmanship, just 'here's a colour wheel now draw a tree now here come up with a pattern, slice your fingers off carving it into a piece of plywood and break your arms trying to use our ancient printing press to print it in ink that's so old it doesn't transfer 75% of the time, have fun kids'

in my school, in art classes the teacher's just like: "alr uuh, it was this teacher's birthday today so let's do a birthday drawing"

My first college degree in 1974 was Commercial Art, now known as Graphic Art. I went to work in the Graphics Dept of Bechtel Corporation. The company had a Drafting Training Program and they offered me a chance to take it. We had our own class room sectioned off from the main engineering departments. It was set up as a full-time paid apprenticeship, working a regular 40 hour week. Over the course of three months we learned all aspects of drafting and design, electrical, mechanical, architecture. We graduated with certification in Drafting/Design. I loved it so much I went back to college taking night classes and got my second degree in 1980 in Electrical Mechanical Drafting Design. In those years everything was done 'on the board' (drafting board) with the physical drawing instruments. There were no computers. It was similar to my art training, tools and materials. I'm 71 and my favorite subject is still perspective. For me the two disciplines of art and mechanical drawing/drafting are interwoven, almost one and the same. My favorite pastime is sketching objects and compositions in orthographic and isometric views. It is very relaxing and my form of doodling. 😊

If you have Procreate (iPad app), there’s an option to set and change your perspective to anything you want. Then you can see all those guidelines (can make them brighter/darker). There’s also a helper option that snaps the line to your perspective as you draw. This is so helpful in learning how to draw in perspective. I’m still learning, but being able to draw exactly proportional boxes as a frame for a character is really handy. I’m at a stage where my mind almost got the whole light/shadow thing figured out, but I want to break out of single-perspective mode so that my characters pop out of the painting and there’s good overall depth.

Ive been drawing animals and architectural things since 4, im now 15, and everywhere i go, people would always compliment! But, the best fact is, when i heard that you have a drawing position, that really stuck to me, because i find it lets you draw angles verry verry well, and i though that was something all artist have. My angle of drawing and writing is around 150° to about 215° thankyou, but this is because ive been drawing almost every day since i was 4, and always watch my surpundings observing how things are in terms of angles. Thankyou! Their is also nothing called armature or pro in art, because every artis has a different style, so when someone says ypur a noob, that just says ypu domt have enough experience, or they just can figure out ypu have a style, but that is also why they cant draw anybetter than you, they got no style at all.

Great video, just some feedback on the initial exercises. It might be worth talking a bit more about how to move your body/arm to draw straight lines. A beginner might practice using just their wrist, and get either frustrated or develop an inferior habit. The texture exercise is something I haven't seen before, and it would be nice to learn a bit more about the kinds of techniques you can use to render a texture. Excited to try it out though and see for myself all the same.

I'm not sure if I'm on the right track but at first I couldn't really see the difference between 2 point and 3 point perspective.. But I think I understand the difference now that I think about it a different way.
It could be viewed like a three story house. The first/top floor (1 point) can be looked at by itself. The second floor is almost directly in front of you.. You don't really need to look to see it. The third floor(3 point) is like looking at the basement without seeing the other floors; it's almost like seeing through the ground.
Now that I've looked at what I've written it looks like complete rubbish.. But it's hard to put my thoughts into words.

Pretty much everytime I do a perspective grid the third VP would be way above or below the canvas (e.g. a simple shot of a room where you can't have extreme perspective but you need three VPs). So how do you make that accurate without adding a second piece of paper etc.? Is there a good way to calculate it? Or would you just eyeball it?

How do you traditionally deal with setting up the COV to reduce distortion in your perspective grids ? Is it best to buy ellipse or circle templates for this or should you try eye balling it till you get better ? Scott's book covers how to set it up but it seems a little technical to do traditionally.

Ok I just found your videos while searching some guides to get started in better sketching/designing. First off your content is great! But I have to be honest i couldn't nearly reproduce the textures like you did, even with looking at texture samples online. My drawing is aweful so maybe it is caused by that but is there any hint you could give me to get better at reproducing something like those textures?

I’ve watched tons of video about perspective, but I’m wondering why nobody mention the most Important part: how to know where to draw the behind part of the cube in 1 point perspective for instance? How to figure the right top and the bottom of the back side of a cube? I have a feeling that there’s some math behind.

So... What pen is that? Been looking for one like it but can't find one.

any fine liner will do my friend, it's just a felt tip pen!

@@moderndayjames I guess I have horrible luck with fine liners. Haven't gotten one that marks as smooth as that one.

it's most likely a matter of line control, hold your pen further back and use your arm when creating straight lines

@@moderndayjames Mine it was more of the fact that they were cheaper brands and a bit outdated. Unfortunately I am stuck waiting for some money to free up before I can replace them.
Really wish there was a good place to find a cheap starter kit for getting started. Too much information and options seem to be a constant when it comes to learning art and it causes the path to become muddy and unclear.
Something like a basic sketchbook or two, a small fineliner set, and some pencils (sketching pencils, mechanical pencils, and/or lead holders) in the 4 middle grades (B, HB, F, & H) with maybe a course akin to Drawabox or Mark Kistler's How to draw in 30 days (maybe both) to get them started...
