- One of my favorite live recordings of Rigoletto: 29 December 1945 Met broadcast - conducted by Cesare Sodero. Leonard Warren, Jussi Björling, and Bidu Sayao all in their vocal primes.
Rigoletto's Act II aria.
More excerpts to come.
No one has reached the brilliance of Warren's voice, of his Rigoletto.
The best baritone. I was able to hear him personally on varios ocasions, all ways great!!!
MERAVIGLIOSO!!!ARTISTA STRAORDINARIO!!!
Grazie di ❤👍
Mine, too. Leonard Warren is the best. Thanks for this.....
It's so true. Warren was incomparable. He'd died when I was a little kid. I spent my youth listening over and over to him doing this scene. God, there will never be anyone like him again.
Wonderful voice Leonard Warrren Awesome
Warren is THE greatest Verdi baritone, his ringing top is thrilling!
Love Warren's beautiful voice, bravo!!
@Barone Vitellio Scarpia Because this guy has the real old school equipment, hardware and software, great things outpouring, and his passionate artistry!
@@道-p2e Now we only have Premifa Famingo as Rigoletto...
@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 God took great baritones away fast, Famingo sings everything, Nabucco at China, not reaching 10% of warren's.
Maravillosa voz, maravilloso canto! Vero baritono verdiano
The pain in Rigoletto's voice as he desperately tries to locate his daughter is so moving that one must weep for him. Rigolleto was Warren's finest role. Many thanks for posting!
I’d always considered Warren’s Prologue from Pag. to be the greatest exemplar of his greatness. After listening to the Rigoletto aria, I’m persuaded that this does not take second to any other. Warren stands unique in this role with his passion, his soaring line, and fatherly despair. In some ways his voice bookended Jussi Bjoerling’s albeit as a baritone. Warren’s voice has a celestial tear throughout the piece, scintillating in the upper register, and enveloped in a pleading tenderness in the quieter portions. He made you feel what he felt, on every note.
Bookended?
Magnificent!!! You can really hear the pain in his voice for his daughter's abduction... Excellent italian diction, except for that "che? Adesso non ridete?"(What? Now you don't laugh anymore?) where you can hear his american "soul". Bravisssimo!
Phew. Like a an ocean of emotion being held back when he sings quietly.
Magnifico!
Warren is a God!
Unbelievably good!
Magnificent.
superbo.
Splendide document ...

Divo!
This reminds me of a Callas masterclass, during which she (in vain) tries to coach a baritone in this difficult scene. Warren fulfills all the demands of this scene, and then some. Such attention to the words! I never heard him live, but I have seen the other baritones mentioned. Merrill and Milnes had glorious voices, but (Merrill in particular), never brought this character to life as Warren does here. He is only 34 years old here, and in top form. Perhaps only Tito Gobbi comes close.
Try it with Ettore Bastianini and Nicolae Harlea. I assure you, you will like both of them.
@InBoccaChiusa Yes but Gobbi's voice never could hold a candle to Waren's!
Very good voice
His voice sounds much better than 10 years later--more focused. Did he change his technique over the years?
@meltzerboy I recommend you listen to the Chinese baritone Liao Chang Yong. He's no Warren but definitely one of the finest Verdi voices of today.
My favorite baritone. Too bad there was no you tube during his time
@GermanOperaSinger Indeed. I was referring to interpretation and characterization only. A great artist, Gobbi did not -for my taste- have a beautiful voice. Certainly not like Warren's.
just saw dmitri hvorostovsky sing this aria live at the Met.... plain horrible... hearing to this made me cry for a good while... I guess they don't make'm like they used to.

Dmitri's voice was starting to experience difficulties during his final years (after his diagnosis of a brain tumor). Seeing his brave final performance of this aria at the Met's 50th brought tears to my eyes. RIP, Dmitri.......
Hvorostovsky's voice is throaty, but Warren is not throaty.
@@BaroneVitellioScarpia1 oh yes, he most certainly is throaty
Yes, sadly they don’t make them like that anymore. Hearing him at the Met was like a wave of sound washing over you.
This is actually Emily Green, who spends all her time criticizing great singers! Sucks to be her!

Great singer, but not in a ligule of Ruffo and Str@cciary
You are wrong. I do not like opinions underscored by the legendary fame of previous performers. Why the modern singers cannot be famous? They can If they are good. They will certainly enter the Heaven of Legends. To be honest, I deeply appreciate Ruffo and Stracciari or Granforte but non Italian Warren beated them with a beauty of his voice as Swede Jussi Bjorling easily competed with all Italian tenors.
Boring
Go Mario Del Monaco, wake you up in a second!
You are a fucking idiot
Who do you think is NOT boring?
