After watching the video again, I think you made a great point with the implication that there seems to be an association between wealth and worthiness. The attitude some have towards the poor is one in which they are seen as failures and undeserving of grace. As if they are lacking God's favor. This is the basis of the prosperity gospel so many preachers are pushing today. We are bombarded with the idea of lack. Beyonce doesn't say it but she is part of the machine that implies that because we may not have her wealth, and connections we are less than.

The “reasonable” is referring to the impact on YOU, not in the view of others. I think that’s the key to this topic: to what degree does a celebrity’s influence within individual fans’ lives remain healthy and reasonable? And beyond this, what agents are at play in the over-influence, aka manipulation, of billionaire elites among average consumers? And finally, what are ways for furthering effective discussion on separating our individual identities from our entertainment media enough to determine if we’re being taken advantage of in some ways? You know I think some Black women's need to see Beyonce as relatable says more about the intense suffering we are going through. Totally agree. Why does EVERYBODY need to be 'relatable' and be palatable for society to vicariously live through them? Brand Beyonce was strategically placed to mimick as sense of perfection (to a certain point). She has never sought to place herself as a 'girl next-door' type. I didn't realize a lot of people related to Beyonce. She grew up sheltered which her own mother admitted, never had to work a 9 to 5 as far as we all know, and grew up middle class and republican. Not saying that she does, but she probably sees the world in a whole different light because she has the choice to.
Sometimes, Beyonce's appeal for me is her unrelatability. As an Asian/Eurasian woman, I have a fairly different heritage. I learned a lot picking through the cultural references in Lemonade. I also like the fact that she didn't bother to explain all her references. We as audiences should also get practice consuming art/media that we don't immediately understand. Life is so much more interesting that way!

As a sea woman born and raised in my native country, I enjoy watching commentary videos/ channels of people from other countries, races, cultures, etc. The insight on their culture and niches is very interesting. I mostly watch American and english channels/videos. Ive noticed that Americans are concerned with race while British people are concerned with class because of their monarchy. It was also interesting how in england micro agressions and discrimination can happen to scots and irish people by brits.

I’m a black woman who grew up in the Church. My family is very religious. For years, I felt ashamed of my body especially after I was m word by my stepfather. I blamed myself and thought I must of did something for a grown man to prey on me. I was also SA’d by my guy friend at 21 which I also blamed myself for as well. I had a lot of negative feelings about my body that took me years to unlearn. I felt trapped in my own body. Even when I decided to get intimate with my boyfriend, it was difficult at first but he was very patient and helped me worked through it. Church Girl really hit me and I really appreciate Beyoncé for making this song.
As a person who has been through sexual trauma as well, my heart goes out to you. I am glad there is a song which can help you channel and redirect your energy...
I've never really told this to anyone but i was sa'ed by 2 different pastors in when I was 11 and 15. Thought it was normal since a friend told me about hers (friend attends the same church and is 2yrsyounger than me) the chruch i attend pre-11yrs pastor cheated on his wife bev she couldn't bare children 😬 I used ro see them as mentors but all pastors I've know my entire life have been shit so I couldn't care less. Now 23, I still go to church and try to be faithful to God. I feel irritated whenever i see these men...1 of them is a friend's dad so we still like see eachother. When I heard church girl, I don't know, I don't have friends and I don't party but church girl gave me this sort of freedom that I can't explain like... I felt happy for other church girls who get to be so expressive of their sexual side. She’s saying she cosplays sometimes through her lyrics as being understanding of poor black people but can’t relate at all. And actively underpaying employees. I personally am more curious and interested by celebrities/stars/ public figures who are NOT relatable. It’s different for me, its intriguing. MJ for example was far from relatable or princess diana; yet I LOVE them. We don’t all only have to like those who we relate to, different is good and should be celebrated as well

Church Girl- this reminded me of Megan Good, & while being married to her ex husband who is a preacher. Megan Good is a beautiful woman with effortless sex appeal- she’s very body positive and it shows in how she models and in her acting career. The level of shaming the church placed on her, the expectations of being the perfect preachers wife, the expectation of her even giving up her career to meet the “Christian Mold” made her anxious and depressed- she questioned her self worth so much her mental health literally deteriorated. The church would disrespect her while her ex husband was preaching live right in front of her…. But she never gave up on her faith even though she was constantly feeling the need to prove herself
You know I always interpreted "I'm letting go of this body" in Church Girl as Bey removing herself from the church (for the night), since the church is known as the *body* of Christ. So it was a bit of word play/double entendre of liberation (getting loose, AND freeing herself from the confines of church doctrine).
Haven't finished the vid yet, but the section about being a church girl resonates with me. I grew up in the church, but I've never really felt completely comfortable or safe in the many churches I've attended. The older I got, the less comfortable I feel being active in church. Imagine trying to engage in something as emotional and deep as religion in a space were you don't feel safe at all. I'm still a believer, but I prefer to worship and pray in solitude because that when I feel safe. Funnily enough, I feel the most accepted and loved in spaces unrelated to religion.
I feel the same way. I have god in my hear but yes I admit I’m not a perfect Muslim, but there is no such thing as a perfect Muslim, or Christian, or Jew etc, but everyone around me in my community act is if they are perfect and they are so judgmental to their own who isn’t as religious to them or just different in general. I have never been comfortable being around my own, because I can’t be myself around them, because I’m not very cultural and religious like them. I was born and raised in America and I have been around Americans more than my kind. So of course odds are im going to be different. I’m Arabic and Muslim, but I don’t have friends who are Arabic and Muslim. All my friends are black, white, Asian, Latino, Jews, etc because they don’t judge me and look at me in a weird way for being different. The older I get the more I get pushed away from being around my own, and i only feel comfortable and accepted when im around people who are outside of my religion and culture. I also have friends who are atheist, but they never judged me like my people do.
I can say im honestly surprised that people actually thought Beyonce or any celebrity were relatable. I think because a ton of people are chronically online they form these parasocial relationships so when you criticize an artist then they take it as a personal attack. This is why I personally think parasocial relationships are a bit dangerous.
Her lifestyle, wealth, and current way of living is not relatable. But her will to work, perfect things, and give her all can be related and inspiring. I feel like people don't see Beyoncé as a human being. They either see her as a machine or this God figure. She is human! She can make mistakes and try new things. Geez! We actually know little about Beyoncé which I don’t mind and I’m glad it’s that way. She does her job / passion which is to entertain us via art. Kind of reminds me of Sade, we literally know nothing about the woman yet she’s recognized globally and has been loved for decades. You can admire and appreciate someone and not relate to them.

When I first heard Church girl it made me cry. Honestly the entire album wrenched out a sense of freedom in me and liberation I didn’t fully understand that I needed. The liberation this album brought me will never be forgotten.

I’m here for it being normalized but I’m against poor hygiene because poor hygiene does in fact cause skin/inflammatory issues so if the hair is prone to irritation from sweat, shave it off sis. You never hear about women who keep their hair and the actual maintenance (shampooing/exfoliating) of their arm pits or pubic area or what’s used to reduce odors
She’s always been a favorite just because of how she continues to do what she was put here to do. Through with love on the last DC album is what opened my eyes to the fact I was in abusive relationship. 48 hours later I was out and on the road driving from Ohio to Michigan. She will always hold a special place in my heart.

I definitely relate to that song. My mother grew up in the church and left but brought us back to that whole white Jesus indoctrination around age 7. I don’t enjoy the misleading interpretations that are often presented in Baptist church spaces. It made me hate my natural self. Church Girl was a whole sermon for me.

This might be one of my fav videos of yours. I don't listen to Beyonce or even know much about her but I was engaged the whole time and every single point you made had me thinking about it and relating with my own experiences of things like celebrity power, worship and allyship vs exploitation, religion, etc. I especially loved hearing Donnell's point of view because I related to his way of thinking about religion but I never see anyone talk about it like that. As a black gay male I personally relate to Beyoncé’s emotions and takes on life and art in general. Also her powerful feminine aura. No, of course I don’t relate to her lifestyle or career accomplishments, but it’s her spirit that I think black women can relate to. Her tenacity and hunger for getting as close to “perfection” as she can by not just talking the talk, but walking the walk. That aspiration, I believe, is quite relatable, in an abstract, philosophical way.

I love that you can be critical about Beyoncé even though you love her the house down. While I call her a queen, queens are never innocent or untouchable. They are still human after all. She's been in this industry almost her entire life and everything is most certainly about strategy in entertainment. Sometimes I wonder if she'd be as successful if she were everything she is but darker skinned. There's something that bothers me about the pedestal we put celebrities on, enough to truly disrespect other in their defense as if pedestals can't get knocked over, cracked, etc. I think Beyoncé has really shaped stan culture too. Beyoncé would have had a very different career if she were dark skinned, and it's hard to say if she'd have reached the same level as success. People struggle to attribute her career success to colorism because she does have the talent, work ethic, creative control and artistic brilliance to back up her accomplishments. The other side of that coin is that a dark skinned entertainer with the same attributes would not likely get the same shine.

Eh, I don’t pretend to be living a multimillionaire lifestyle or know what it’s like, but I am sexy, talented, and beautiful. Do people really feel like Beyonce is relatable though? I’ve always thought part of her appeal, especially in the past few years, is the fact she’s inaccessible and still has some of that mystique celebrities used to have.
The reason we have all these personalities doing dumb s*** is because everyone is trying to be relatable. The constant need to find things you relate to at times can be indicative of insecurities because you always need some sort of validation to confirm thoughts about yourself, interests, etc. I often see in the comments section people saying oh my "oh my gosh I love that you don't flaunt your wealth, you are so down to earth", which can be translated to you make me not feel bad about my circumstances and watching you allows me not to confront my reality and do something about it. This is why we have a lot of jealous people, all my friends are different from me some are more successful, prettier, fitter than me etc. We are all secure in who we are and don't need to play to certain ideas in order to relate to one another. YOU DO NOT NEED TO LIKE THINGS YOU RELATE TO ONLY, SOMETIME YOU JUST LIKE SOMETHING, AND THATS IT!

too true, on the mainstreaming of ballroom culture and its profitability . there's an uncomfortable gap between Azealia Banks interpolating vogue moves and ballroom beats in earlier singles, in a time where "queer rap" was sort of figuring itself out, and Beyonce returning to some of those same leitfmotifs post-"Pose" or "Legendary".
She was never relatable because she has always been treated as “better than” by people around her. Stans exist because the association is a dopamine trigger. Fascinating that of all celebrities, this woman gets a whole pass for everything even while making moves that are in direct contradiction with “pro-Black” sentiments.

Great video. Your so articulate and honest which I really love. But Speaking of Beyoncé and profitability, I wouldn’t say she is just profiting off of blm, queerness or etc. (current cultural trends) because whenever she is vocalizing her stance or calling attention to these movements through her music she is taking the time to do immense research. For example, I didn’t know how deep lemonade went in terms of the history she included and the deeper meanings of the lyrics until I sat down and listened to the Dissect podcast. Also when accepting awards for lemonade she called attention to the people she was trying uplift. Also prior to that she was involved in the blm movement (marching & charity). For this album she said this was personal for her due to her relationship with her God mother, uncle Johnny who sadly passed away from HIV and who introduced her to a lot of the music that is included in the album. Also one thing I noticed is that she gets a lot of flack for the immense credits on her albums. Which Is just something people do to take away from the work that she personally put into her music. But her “over crediting” more so then a lot of other artists is very intentional. For this album alone she credited over 300 people. Some who have never gotten their proper credit for helping curate the genre along side all the queer artists featuring in the album. So I thing it was more than just a cash grab and more so a renaissance and celebration of this genre, of blackness and queerness. I feel like I type too much lol but I just wanted to state my opinion on the subject.

After watching the video again, I think you made a great point with the implication that there seems to be an association between wealth and worthiness. The attitude some have towards the poor is one in which they are seen as failures and undeserving of grace. As if they are lacking God's favor. This is the basis of the prosperity gospel so many preachers are pushing today. We are bombarded with the idea of lack. Beyonce doesn't say it but she is part of the machine that implies that because we may not have her wealth, and connections we are less than.

It’s not lost on me that this is due to a plethora of underlying elements regarding social identity, celebrity culture, and longstanding systems of oppression/exploitation of specific groups. I’m fascinated to witness (in the comment section) such intense personal defenses of a superstar, as though she’s related to these fans on a familial level. I know this is not a necessary dynamic for someone to identify as a super big fan of Beyoncé (in other words, an unhealthy parasocial dynamic is not an inherent part of seriously enjoying an entertainer’s work and even their public persona).
It seems that you, Tee, exemplify this yourself. The very comment I’m responding to is a great description of your personal understanding of your “reasonable fan status”, if you will. The “reasonable” is referring to the impact on YOU, not in the view of others.
I think that’s the key to this topic: to what degree does a celebrity’s influence within individual fans’ lives remain healthy and reasonable? And beyond this, what agents are at play in the over-influence, aka manipulation, of billionaire elites among average consumers? Sometimes, Beyonce's appeal for me is her unrelatability. As an Asian/Eurasian woman, I have a fairly different heritage. I learned a lot picking through the cultural references in Lemonade. I also like the fact that she didn't bother to explain all her references. We as audiences should also get practice consuming art/media that we don't immediately understand. Life is so much more interesting that way!

As a sea woman born and raised in my native country, I enjoy watching commentary videos/ channels of people from other countries, races, cultures, etc. The insight on their culture and niches is very interesting. I mostly watch American and english channels/videos. Ive noticed that Americans are concerned with race while British people are concerned with class because of their monarchy. It was also interesting how in england micro agressions and discrimination can happen to scots and irish people by brits.

I’m a black woman who grew up in the Church. My family is very religious. For years, I felt ashamed of my body especially after I was m word by my stepfather. I blamed myself and thought I must of did something for a grown man to prey on me. I was also SA’d by my guy friend at 21 which I also blamed myself for as well. I had a lot of negative feelings about my body that took me years to unlearn. I felt trapped in my own body. Even when I decided to get intimate with my boyfriend, it was difficult at first but he was very patient and helped me worked through it. Church Girl really hit me and I really appreciate Beyoncé for making this song.

Church Girl- this reminded me of Megan Good, & while being married to her ex husband who is a preacher. Megan Good is a beautiful woman with effortless sex appeal- she’s very body positive and it shows in how she models and in her acting career. The level of shaming the church placed on her, the expectations of being the perfect preachers wife, the expectation of her even giving up her career to meet the “Christian Mold” made her anxious and depressed- she questioned her self worth so much her mental health literally deteriorated. Haven't finished the vid yet, but the section about being a church girl resonates with me. I grew up in the church, but I've never really felt completely comfortable or safe in the many churches I've attended. The older I got, the less comfortable I feel being active in church. Imagine trying to engage in something as emotional and deep as religion in a space were you don't feel safe at all. I'm still a believer, but I prefer to worship and pray in solitude because that when I feel safe. Funnily enough, I feel the most accepted and loved in spaces unrelated to religion.
I feel the same way. I have god in my hear but yes I admit I’m not a perfect Muslim, but there is no such thing as a perfect Muslim, or Christian, or Jew etc, but everyone around me in my community act is if they are perfect and they are so judgmental to their own who isn’t as religious to them or just different in general. I have never been comfortable being around my own, because I can’t be myself around them, because I’m not very cultural and religious like them. I was born and raised in America and I have been around Americans more than my kind. So of course odds are im going to be different. I’m Arabic and Muslim, but I don’t have friends who are Arabic and Muslim. All my friends are black, white, Asian, Latino, Jews, etc because they don’t judge me and look at me in a weird way for being different. The older I get the more I get pushed away from being around my own, and i only feel comfortable and accepted when im around people who are outside of my religion and culture. I also have friends who are atheist, but they never judged me like my people do.
I can say im honestly surprised that people actually thought Beyonce or any celebrity were relatable. I think because a ton of people are chronically online they form these parasocial relationships so when you criticize an artist then they take it as a personal attack. This is why I personally think parasocial relationships are a bit dangerous.
Her lifestyle, wealth, and current way of living is not relatable. But her will to work, perfect things, and give her all can be related and inspiring. I feel like people don't see Beyoncé as a human being. They either see her as a machine or this God figure. She is human! She can make mistakes and try new things. Geez! This might be one of my fav videos of yours. I don't listen to Beyonce or even know much about her but I was engaged the whole time and every single point you made had me thinking about it and relating with my own experiences of things like celebrity power, worship and allyship vs exploitation, religion, etc. I especially loved hearing Donnell's point of view because I related to his way of thinking about religion but I never see anyone talk about it like that. Also the part about giving celebrities the position of allies for doing the bare minimum gave me a lot to chew on.

No, of course I don’t relate to her lifestyle or career accomplishments, but it’s her spirit that I think black women can relate to. That aspiration, I believe, is quite relatable, in an abstract, philosophical way.

Okay but I didn't get as much disco from this album as I did house and club ?!? I mean disco is Doja's "Say So," Dua Lipa's "Levitating", Lizzo's "About Damn Time" and disco has been peppered in pop music all over the radio the past few years. Tee is so intentional and exact with her words. The way she speaks is how my mind operates if only I could express this well verbally. This is very true about Beyoncé and how she puts together albums that are soul-soothing but I just cannot relate to her. She is certainly a free soul. Something tells me her trips around the world were more than just vacations ESPECIALLY Africa. She's another level of confident and free even while being shy and graceful.

I love that you can be critical about Beyoncé even though you love her the house down. While I call her a queen, queens are never innocent or untouchable. They are still human after all. She's been in this industry almost her entire life and everything is most certainly about strategy in entertainment. Sometimes I wonder if she'd be as successful if she were everything she is but darker skinned. There's something that bothers me about the pedestal we put celebrities on, enough to truly disrespect other in their defense as if pedestals can't get knocked over, cracked, etc. I think Beyoncé has really shaped stan culture too. Or maybe she's just the first one I noticed it about with the rise of internet. And we don't actually know too much about her personally. I love her alot but I would never call her fully relatable, especially when she's not always the one writing her lyrics. She just knows how to play the game.

Beyoncé would have had a very different career if she were dark skinned, and it's hard to say if she'd have reached the same level as success. People struggle to attribute her career success to colorism because she does have the talent, work ethic, creative control and artistic brilliance to back up her accomplishments. The other side of that coin is that a dark skinned entertainer with the same attributes would not likely get the same shine.
She is soooo talented and I love Beyoncé. But no, if she were dark skinned, she would not have obtained the same level of success. Her being lighter skinned played a huge roll in her success. Her dad said the same thing, you can look up his interview.

The song Church Girl is so powerful and liberating. Lots hate it but don’t really look and analyze into the lyrics. The message it brings really got to me. Confidence is a huge part of it, not feeling shamed, guilty nor judged. Such an emotional and empowering song.

Eh, I don’t pretend to be living a multimillionaire lifestyle or know what it’s like, but I am sexy, talented, and beautiful. Do people really feel like Beyonce is relatable though? I’ve always thought part of her appeal, especially in the past few years, is the fact she’s inaccessible and still has some of that mystique celebrities used to have.
The reason we have all these personalities doing dumb s*** is because everyone is trying to be relatable. The constant need to find things you relate to at times can be indicative of insecurities because you always need some sort of validation to confirm thoughts about yourself, interests, etc. I often see in the comments section people saying oh my "oh my gosh I love that you don't flaunt your wealth, you are so down to earth", which can be translated to you make me not feel bad about my circumstances and watching you allows me not to confront my reality and do something about it.
This is why we have a lot of jealous people, all my friends are different from me some are more successful, prettier, fitter than me etc. We are all secure in who we are and don't need to play to certain ideas in order to relate to one another. YOU DO NOT NEED TO LIKE THINGS YOU RELATE TO ONLY, SOMETIME YOU JUST LIKE SOMETHING, AND THATS IT!

too true, on the mainstreaming of ballroom culture and its profitability . there's an uncomfortable gap between Azealia Banks interpolating vogue moves and ballroom beats in earlier singles, in a time where "queer rap" was sort of figuring itself out, and Beyonce returning to some of those same leitfmotifs post-"Pose" or "Legendary".

Great video. Your so articulate and honest which I really love. But Speaking of Beyoncé and profitability, I wouldn’t say she is just profiting off of blm, queerness or etc. (current cultural trends) because whenever she is vocalizing her stance or calling attention to these movements through her music she is taking the time to do immense research. For example, I didn’t know how deep lemonade went in terms of the history she included and the deeper meanings of the lyrics until I sat down and listened to the Dissect podcast. Also when accepting awards for lemonade she called attention to the people she was trying uplift. Also prior to that she was involved in the blm movement (marching & charity). For this album she said this was personal for her due to her relationship with her God mother, uncle Johnny who sadly passed away from HIV and who introduced her to a lot of the music that is included in the album. Also one thing I noticed is that she gets a lot of flack for the immense credits on her albums. Which Is just something people do to take away from the work that she personally put into her music. But her “over crediting” more so then a lot of other artists is very intentional. For this album alone she credited over 300 people. Some who have never gotten their proper credit for helping curate the genre along side all the queer artists featuring in the album. So I thing it was more than just a cash grab and more so a renaissance and celebration of this genre, of blackness and queerness. I feel like I type too much lol but I just wanted to state my opinion on the subject.
I don't think many people are capable of the objectivity that you've done in this video and WE KNOW how much you love Beyoncé. But please know it was nothing short of amazing. And yes honey that wig is GIVING!!
