    00:00 Introduction
00:26 History of the Hip Flask:
Before the modern era consuming alcohol was almost a health measure\ because it could disinfect and help to deal with not so clean water.
Christian pilgrims would use flasks to bring home oil or other sacred substances.
01:05 The flask as you know today is a modern beverage bottle and some pinpoint its origins to 18th century England.
In the US, prohibition made alcohol illegal from 1920 to 1933 but nevertheless, people continued drinking.
Flasks weren't just limited to the hip or the coat pocket but they were also worn by ladies in their garters or by men in their boots which is where the name bootlegging comes from.
Today, flax is primarily used to just carry one's own hard liquor if you know that you can't find it at the place where you're going to.
02:28 Why is it called a hip flask or coat flask?
It's because it was carried in the hip pocket of trousers or in the coat pocket of a sport coat suit or blazer.
Flasks are great gifts because you can have them engraved with little mementos initials, important events, or other things that remind you of something.
03:02 In terms of materials, most flasks coming out are pewter, glass, sterling silver, or stainless steel. Sometimes you can also find something that is leather-encased but on the inside, you'll always either have glass or steel.
04:43 In terms of size, a standard flask contains about 8 ounces or 240 milliliters. You can also find much smaller ones but obviously, they won't contain more than a shot. An 8-ounce container, you get about 4 to 5 decent-sized shots.
04:58 What should you fill in your flask?
Honestly, the best thing is hard liquors -
Whiskey, bourbon, rum, vodka, brandy, Armagnac. You name it, anything that's a hard liquor is perfect for a flask.
    06:00 Do's and Don'ts:
Do understand that even though prohibition is long gone certain states still have laws that prohibit you from carrying containers of alcohol in public.
Don't attempt to bring a filled flask on an airplane.
Do carry to a wedding party, maybe private places or any kind of event where you're absolutely certain that it will be acceptable to drink from your flask.
Don't just carry a flask purely to get drunk.
Don't take a flask to restaurants bars or theaters.
When you are in company, make sure you do offer your friends a round.
Don't bring a flask to funerals or occasions where flasks would be simply inappropriate.
Do prepare to definitely get some judgment from people.
    Don't buy kitschy-shaped flasks.
Don't carry more liquor in your flask that you can consume without embarrassing yourself.
Do plan a safe ride home.
Don't make carrying a flask a habit or a personal hallmark.

Not all flasks are watertight in my experience, especially cheap ones. When I was in middle school I thought I was a genius for coming up with the idea of carrying mouthwash in a flask. My logic being (I'm sorry if you cringe out of your skin), whenever I end up mackin' on all the girls I was convinced I would be with, I would always have minty fresh breath, without smackin' on gum.
The reality is, I was an idiot who wore poorly fitting, baggy pants. The flask would bounce around because I was a child and couldn't sit still. Then everyone in school would say "Why does the room smell like mouthwash?" while I turned red in the corner.

A flask is unofficially a mandatory accessory at a military funeral or occasion of remembrance. When paying respects at a grave, a drink is taken then a measure poured out at that foot of the grave.
Commonwealth soldiers will sometimes also do similarly when visiting a military cemetery pouring out a measure at the stone of remembrance or a grave of a soldier from their regiment.

I always use them as an stylish alternative to water bottles instead. A bottle of water is cumbersome and impossible to put in your pockets without it looking strange, but a flask filled with water is perfect for the gentleman that wants to be hydrated while going about. there is no way you can hold enough water in a flask to stay hydrated. just carry a water bottle if you're going somewhere that you are going to be for an extended period of time. most water bottles will actually keep your water cold too, and have the added benefit of not looking super cringe when you drink from one at 10:45am on a weekday

I never feel like your rules and advice are a burden; quite the contrary, they provide structure. A flask can be considered an "open container" of alcohol. This means that if you get pulled over and you have a flask in the passenger compartment of your vehicle, you risk being charged with driving under the influence, even if you haven't consumed any alcohol. This is why I always drive with my flask in the locking toolbox in the bed of my pickup, where it is neither readily accessible, nor could it be considered to be inside of the vehicle.

it's a pleasant surprise to find your low expectations on someone are wrong by trying the flask and noticing it's not a hard liquor, it's an unpleasant surprise to find out that water bottle your friend carries around is actually filled with everclear. I'd still stick with a water bottle for hydration, maybe a personal one you refill so you can also match it with your briefcase and clothing (removing all issues that come with a thin plastic container and adding some style points).

Thank you very much for the flask does and don’ts. Far too often I see people misusing flasks, either to bring alcohol to alcohol free events or to support their own alcoholism. IMO a flask (in this day and age) should be used to bring your own personal favorites to alcohol friendly events

The only time I use a flask is during skiing trips. It's nice to have around when you're in a cold ski lift.
(Not to make you warm, but mostly cause it's nice to have a drink and enjoy the view)
Does everyone do that as well, or is it just a thing with the groups I ski with?

OMG drunken Sven ROFLMAO! I'm still laughing haha! Anyway, I must be a heathen, because I *always* take a flask to funerals. I usually offer a sip to a few friends there while we share stories, as a toast and tribute to the departed. I guess it depends on the crowd, but among my group of artist types, it's usually welcome.
The last notable event I packed my flask to was at Caltech, to witness (live) the final plunge of the Cassini spacecraft into Saturn's atmosphere. I shared a toast with couple of the team members.
Interestingly, my flask is high-tin-content pewter (92% tin). No lead, of course, lead hasn't been used in pewter for ages. But I never put more liquor in it than I plan to drink/share for one event, so I haven't noticed any flavor problems.
    Thanks for the video.

I've owned three different flasks and every one of them leaked at the cap. I have a couple sizes of smaller glass bottles which originally had booze in them. Whenever I want to carry I use one of those. They never leak and they were free with a purchase of the contents. And no, they never break even being glass. They're pretty strong.

    • @Bluemilk92
      @Bluemilk92 2 роки тому +1

Right!? I always thought the idea was that water has surface tension, making it easier to prevent spills. High gravity spirits on the other hand, leak. So they need special containers.
Every flask I've ever owned, was leaky AF.

Interestingly, the flask is always connected to alcohol (stating the obvious, I know). Though I do find enjoyment in coming up with drinks that are alcohol free to be consumed out of a glass or other container (like the flask), as I don't drink. My favourite is Fever Tree's Elderflower Tonic water either out of a shot glass or a flask.
It is in some ways an attempt to feel classy without having to ever actually touch alcohol in any way.

I was given a stainless steel flask that has one of those round plastic coated foam seals inside the top of the cap (like you find in medicine bottles and things like that). What's the best practice for these? I imagine it makes it leak proof, but will it also eventually get grimy? I don't want to pull it out in case it's supposed to stay.

I have a hip flask, but, I actually want to use it to carry water for when I go out for long walks in the city, given its convenient size and that it looks classier than a plastic bottle. But I don't know if I can drink comfortably with everyone, including the cops, judging!

I'd say stick with the plastic bottle, maybe buy your own water container but don't put the water in a flask, you'll just get bad looks if you go "man, I'm thirsty" and then chug down your entire flask.
