Until now has no one ever written to maestro Katsaris how generous and kind he is to put online his Masterclasses full of really valuable suggestions for every pianist…? Well if no one has written it yet then I'll write it to him 🤩😃🤗
What a wonderful girl! She is loaded with musical talent and played these sublime variations with understanding as well as feeling. I love the speed she chose for the Theme (not too fast, but not dragging) and the clarity of the counterpoint in the first two variations. Here I will stop commenting on variation by variation. I loved her unbroken focus and the absence of pauses between variations, playing it as ONE piece and not as a number of variations stitched together. Her technique is more than adequate to express how she hears and feels this piece. If I have any criticism at all , it is that I wish she didn't play variation 16 and the first part of variation 17 quite so staccato. I hope that she has gone on to a happy and fulfilling career as a pianist, as this video was made eight years ago.
That is invaluable advice from Katsaris, to use your imagination and not to adhere to the competition accepted cookie cutter approach to interpretation.
Very interetsing. A good teacher but he struggles with some of the technical challenges of this virtuoso piece. Listen to the rendering by Sviatoslav Richter of this piece on UA-cam and you'll see what I mean. I wouldn't attempt to play this! Tiger Mum watching on.
He said that he's never practiced the piece before. I guarantee you that Katsaris would have absolutely NO problem with any of the technical challenges in these variations. He owns one of THE greatest techniques of any pianist of our time.
Extraordinary. Is her mother translating for her, or just interfering? Poor child, having to cope with double teaching. She is very gifted, and possibly very muddled too by now, with mother trying to take over. In the end, stopped watching. Unbearable.

what an incredible teacher...This global comprehension, open minded and immediate replication with outstanding technical and musical sense...
So glad there's a new master class uploaded! Thank you very much, this is invaluable.
Thank you for sharing this beautiful document with us
Great masterclass, with some precious advices
Yes, Mendelssohn is indeed a great composer!
fantastic!
Katsaris: "I've never practiced this piece." Still plays perfectly anyways.
I'm prima vista! Ha ha, he's a genious :-)
of course, he is !
It's to show off.
What an incredible player. I wonder, how old is she? Mendelssohn composed such exciting and vibrant music.
Looks like she is in her mid teens.
She looks no older than 10 to me. Even younger. She began attending school in 2012.
This continues to educate and inspire. Very helpful. Thank you for posting!
Wonderful 👍
it’s crazy how different her interpretation is compared to mine when I played it!
excelent!
Shes a great student
She play so unmusical- nobody improve her interpretation.
She plays like a robot. She seems not feeling anything.
Even Glenn Gould loved the theme.
So nice! Japanese girl! Japanese people are great!
No they are not fuk u
Does anyone know which piece is it at 22:19?

Why is it invaluable?
Yes, imagine actually using your imagination. How revolutionary.
Pedal use, and Pedal abuse!
i hate that piano she plays on for some reason

it will be a whole new world

Master classes get on my nerves.
Stop the talking and just play the damn thing- who cares about "interpretation"?
I do.
Well that is your opinion, I see it the complete opposite way.
Just about the most moronic comment I've seen on UA-cam. Which is saying something.
rationalistx Interpretation is the most important thing. If you just play the partition like a robot, it will be flat
Gedox33 Exactly, I'm of the same opinion. Feelings should definantly be shown in music, it's very important.
