      @@jomboy_ , the point is that the base score of 375 for third place doesn't matter and just makes the math look more difficult to add suspense for those that don't realize that you get a net of 175 points for each opponent you beat.
      Scores were:
      Christa 1100
      Tiff 900
      Brent 800
      Both Tiff and Brent were more than 175 away from Christa, but less than 350. That means they could beat her, but they needed to be two places ahead. In other words, she needed to come in third. More generally:
      If opponents are tied or 100 apart, then the final event is all that matters.
      If opponents are 200 or 300 apart, then the player behind needs to win with the leader coming in last.
      If the opponents are 400+ points behind, then they cannot catch the leader.
      The only complication occurs if the last place player is 200 or 300 behind both opponents. In that case, they can't win, because both of their opponents can't come in 3rd.
      A common scenario is:
      A 1000
      B 900
      C 800
      If A wins the last event, then A wins.
      Since B is within 100 points, if B wins the final event, then B wins.
      Since C is 200 points behind *one* opponent, then they need to win with A coming in third. If it goes C-B-A, then C wins. If it goes C-A-B, then A wins, C comes in 2nd, and B comes 3rd.
      If C only started with 700 points, they would have now been at least 200 points behind both opponents and C could not win. If it went C-B-A, B would now win by 25 points (1450 (= 900 + 550) versus 1425 (= 700 + 725)).

      I think you’re right. I also think they intentionally made it confusing to do mental math so there’s still some suspense on the outcome

    • @deepowls
      @deepowls 7 місяців тому +11

      This is correct. It could have been any number between 151 and 199, inclusive, and it'd have the same result. As for why they scoring at 375, I can't tell you. It could have been 100, 275, and 450 just as easily. I suppose making the math look harder adds suspense for those who can't figure it out.
      Regardless, Tiff (200 behind) and Brent (300 behind) both needed to win and Christa to come 3rd. Christa just need to come second. If the results in the last event were completely random, Christa had a 2-in-3 chance of winning and the other two each had 1-in-6.
      It is impressive the amount of time they've invested into trying to figure out the points in the last round and still not getting it.

      The foot markers are extra thick (1.2" inches by my measure) so they can't squeeze in the fifth inch marker on the bottom half-foot. I would assume that 11' 1" would be the top of the 11' marker and 11' 0" would be the bottom...and then you subtract an inch because the official measurer is a prick.
      It ultimately doesn't matter as long as they're consistent in how they measure for each contestant.

    The scoring on the crag is brilliant. I have a math degree and I still find it too cumbersome to think through the scenarios, so I just watch and wait with anticipation.
    Although, I will say, it's more beneficial to think in terms of the differences (175 between each successive place, 350 between 1st and 3rd) than by trying to add up the totals. So, Christa going into the Crag with a 200 and 300 point lead could only be overtaken by coming in 3rd, since 175 couldn't make up for either the 200 or 300 point lead. But a 3rd place finish and a 350 point swing would allow either competitor to win.

    I finally realized why the measurements are so strange on the jump board: there aren’t 12 inch marks in their feet.
    Below the 6” marker there are only four small ticks versus the five above.
    When the guy measures blue, he goes from the closer measuring point (the 10’6” mark) down by two ticks and calls it 10’4”. When he measures the purple swipe (which is only one inch lower) it looks like it’s closer to 10’, so he counts up two ticks and it’s 10’2”
    Also the event requires two hits for a jump to be valid.

    I’m really concerned with the measurement levels on the “Make Your Mark” event. For example, if you look at the intervals between 10’ 0” and 10’ 6” there are only four tiny lines in between them (representing inches) when there should be five. So, does it go 10’ 0” to 10’ 1” to 10’ 2” to 10’ 3” to 10’ 4” and then 10’ 6”? That does not make sense. 22:30

    • @deepowls
      @deepowls 7 місяців тому +1

      That is a good catch.
      The foot marker lines are extra thick. I thought they might be an inch long, but I just measured them and they're 1/10 of a foot each, or 1.2". On my laptop, I measured 250 pixels from the top of the 11' mark to the top of the 12' mark. I measured 25 pixels for the width of the 11' marker.
      It is the case that the bottom section only has four "inch" markers to account for the thickness of the foot markers.
      Ultimately, the number doesn't matter since they're only taking the best result. Just as long as the call it the same way for everyone, it's fine. Even if they used randomly increasing numbers, it'd work the same.
      No, I don't have anything better to do with my time.

    easiest breakdown for figuring out crag breakpoints:
    if youre 200 ahead, they need to 2-place up you on the crag (they get first you get third)
    if youre 400 up youre locked no matter what
    those are the only breakpoints, 100 difference is the same as being tied, 300 difference is the same as 200

    The measurements on the jump event look off because the camera is looking from the side at an angle. It distorts where the foot aligns with the measuring stick. You would need to look at the wall head on to determine where the heel lines up. Think of nfl games when they review spots or touchdowns; unless it’s a viewpoint down the line you can be tricked into thinking the ball did or did not cross a certain line.

    For scoring I’ve started at the bottom and worked backwards, so take 3rd place score going into the Crag and give them the win of 700 and then take 1st going into the Crag and give them 3rd of 300, if 3rd can’t win getting first because 1st taking 3rd is still more, well does 2nd getting 500 overtake 1st after getting 300 and if so then 1st need to finish ahead of 2nd regardless if they go 2-3 b/c we already established 3rd can’t win. If 3rd can win getting 700, well 1st needs to win, who cares what second needs because if they win, it means 3rd didn’t and 2nd wins.

      To simplify, only focus on 300, 500, 700, the 75-50-25 respectively don’t matter because points are always ending in 00 so nothing will ever combine and roll over to the next 100.

    I need you guys to know that the producers appear to have incorrectly measured the jump challenge…there’s only 11 inches per foot on the ruler. Did my husband and I pause the video to count this up and then scream?yes, yes we did.

  • @Warriorfan287
    @Warriorfan287 7 місяців тому

    The reason for measuring at the bottom of the footprint is to avoid an advantage to a bigger kid with a bigger foot. If you go from the bottom of the mark the foot size is irrelevant and therefore the most fair way to score

  • @Chuiodie
    @Chuiodie 7 місяців тому

    I'm still confused by the jump measuring, because there's only 4 ticks between the foot and the 6 inch mark.

    ATTN Jimmy and Jake:
    If you already were infuriated by the foot jump scoring system. Just count the hash marks on the board. There are 4 hash marks between each half foot instead of 5. It makes 0 sense. But very on brand.

    You guys have said it is a 250 point differential on the craig multiple times. It is 350 difference between 1st and 3rd. 175 between each rank. Brent could have won if Christa had got 3rd on the craig.

    It’s measured by the heel because if Tiff and I both landed our heels at 10 feet, I would win because my foot is longer than hers. It takes the length of your foot out of the equation.

    Can you guys please talk about why the scale in the high jump competition goes
    10’0
    10’1
    10’2
    10’3
    10’4
    ?????!!!!!
    10’6
    10’7
    10’8
    10’9
    10’10
    10’11
    12’0
    They completely skip an entire inch mark on the official scale on the board. Like they didn’t even try.
