Thank you for the timely response. You have saved me from making a costly mistake, I can still get the fabric - so tomorrow I go shopping in the AM and using my shirring elastic in the PM. By the way, I found shirring elastic in my mom's sewing stuff when she passed away in 1999 at the age of 85, it has taken this long to find out what it was and how to use it; yes I have purchased so fresh new "strechy" elastic., thank you again!.

Hi At 73 yrs young I have just decided to try shirring elastic for the first time, I followed you tutorial and found it very easy to understand, and I was quite successful first time round, one little problem was the elastic kept springing back into the machine, and to solve it I used a washing peg to hold the top cotton and elastic at the back of the machine, just long enough to get started, and it worked well, hey pressto problem solved Regards Mo wilkins

Try the gathering stitch. This is two lines of stitching that are pulled at either end to create gathers. That should help.

Hi. The grain doesn't really matter and shouldn't be an issue. The only way to get things right is by trial and error. Use test pieces and ensure that when you wind the shirring elastic onto the spool, make sure the tension is right. It can take a while to perfect the technique.

I have a top loading machine and it was a PAIN to thread the elastic thread. I tied a length of regular thread to the end of the elastic thread with a tight small knot, then used that leader to pull the elastic thread through the feeder. Much easier.

Check your bobbin tension, you need some tension, but not pulled as tight as it can go. Also, when you back stitch at the beginning that you have the bobbin thread pulled taught. Instead of stopping for each row, I turn the fabric around and stitch the next line going the other way. That way I keep my tension

Hi. Your questions are most welcome. You only need a regular needle for this technique (I used one in the video). I'd use a stitch of around 2.5 - 3.5 and wouldn't go any less than that. It's just a case of practice and testing to see what looks best and the different effects the stitch length produces. Hope that helps a little.

Your tension and stitch length will need to be altered but this will all be dependent on your fabric types. Do a tester piece to get it right before you start.

It will depend on the fabric you are using but I'd opt to use probably double the amount you'd normally use. It is important to do a little tester first to ensure your calculations are correct.
