      @@marcoflumino Trump doesn't want anyone accepting anything a young earth creationist wouldn't. YEC's accept engineering and everything it can do. However, when it proves humans are responsible for altering Earth's climate and that the Earth is more than 10000 years old, they'll say it's as wrong as they think 'liberals' are. Also, whatever draws critical thinkers away from pursuits Trump considers 'liberal causes' and towards his irrational thinking, he'll support.

    I could see Elon Musk having some secret plan to do this, easily combining his business ventures into one. The boring company to mine, Tesla as transportation/energy, i.e Tesla vehicles, Tesla batteries and solar panels, finally Space-X to travel and transport materials between the earth and moon.. We live in an amazing time.

These idiots mined the moon and cause it to go out of balance, why human nowadays do things without thinking of the consequences...but call themselves scientist/leaders who save the world. ironic and idiotic. The energy from the EARTH sea waves could produce 7x energy needed by ALL humankind and yet they look to the moon.

      Thanks for this feedback. During the first space race, the United States spent about 10 percent of GDP for nearly a decade on the Apollo programme. If nothing else, this proves that very large commitments to space activity are possible. We just need to learn to do this kind of thing again, but for peaceful, less political, survival purposes.

      ExplainingTheFuture Supposedly Russia has spent 51 billion USD on the Sochi Winter Olympics. I can only imagine what would happen if that money was funded into a space mining program or a space elevator project. The money spent would not have went to waste, it would be going into an extreme idea and venture for humankind unlocking doors to the vast space resources. Unlike a sporting event that could create country pride and generate minor income. Which would be outmatched by tons of precious resources and a pride for an entire human race with a space elevator.

    • @ExplainingTheFuture
      @ExplainingTheFuture  10 років тому +1

      wondertwins2222 Agreed. This has to be true. And the money spent on things like nuclear weapons could be far better directed into space travel and related activities. Humanity does not (yet) lack the resources to complete these grand initiatives -- we just choose to deploy the finite reserves of our first planet in a very short-sighted manner.

    That's not NASA that ISRO who found water on moon plz correct it

    • @ExplainingTheFuture
      @ExplainingTheFuture  6 років тому +2

      The narration runs "since 2009, NASA have confirmed the presence of water on the Moon", and this is true. In November 2008, ISRO's Chandrayaan-1 released a Moon Impact Probe probe that detected potential evidence of water. In September 2009, NASA's Moon Mineralogy Mapper -- aboard Chandrayaan-1 -- then detected water on the Moon's surface. NASA's LCROSS then gathered further evidence in 2009. None of these experiments were absolutely definitive, and have to be taken as collectively building up evidence. I did not say in the video that "in 2009, NASA was the first to detect (probable) water on the Moon." :) Also, note that there is no way to "correct" a UA-cam video. In the past an annotation could be added, but no longer.

    Added bonus: to help the economic profitability, oil companies that usually have part of their customers demand high quality lower stage rocket fuel (such as RP-1) could use the extra money to research and help fund space missions as they expand their business models to encompass fusion power as they aid their future buyers (like SpaceX). As there is already a lot of money going into oil rigs will need to be expensively refurbished. This way, more companies should be less scared of the investment. And the research can be used in other fields, such as communications and Landsat or other scientific research (because of cheaper satellite launches), the research could be also reused with commercial human spaceflight. Who knows? Maybe energy companies and space companies will become tightly linked. Solar panels have been benefitted from their research for the space program, and a wealth of other energy infrastructure.

    The best shielding for those protons is a plastic like polyethalene.
    Anything with a lot of hydrogen in it.
    I don't think it is a sensible idea to plan on bringing anything back to Earth.
    The moon is a source of materials for mankind in space rather than here on Earth.
    Helium 3 isn't that common. You wouldn't need those huge tanks.
    You could only sell 8 kilos a year to the Earth if you did that. That's all the market there is for it in the foreseeable future (so vast space freighters seems a bit unlikely).
    Solar panels are going to be a big problem on the moon. The regolith is electrically charged and will stick to the panels and block out sunlight.
    I don't how come it does get all the place but experience has taught us that it does make it onto astronauts visors even though it is supposed to just be on the ground and not floating around.
    I wouldn't be sending people to the moon.
    We need to aim for people in space but why do they have to be on the moon?
    The moon needs to be just robots because on the one hand it is low gravity and on the other hand that regolith is just a mountain of problems because of how abrasive it is and because it sticks to everything..

    This is exciting stuff and I hate to rain on anyone's parade but, although we have methods to mine Helium-3, and existing tech that could transport it back to Earth, does a functioning fusion power plant design that could produce usable amounts of power from Helium-3 exist yet? The few fusion projects that I heard of either 1) consumed more energy than they produced 2) did not utilize Helium-3 in their energy making process.
    hope im wrong

      @ExplainingTheFuture  9 років тому +4

      +Silver-Bears IARIBO You are right about current fusion plants, and about the fact that we have yet to create a helium-3 fusion plant. However, they would be easier to create than fusion plants powered with tritium and deuterium (as in experiment to date), as the 'fast neutrons problem' goes away, while the 'fast protons' created could (in theory) be magnetically contained. It is all exciting as you note, though sadly all still theoretical. Though we have to dream big! :)

      They extended the deadline by a year -- and then another -- so it now stands at a "final" December 2017. This is also likely to be definitive as they decided only to extend a second time if at least one team announced that it had signed a launch contract. And one did! :) So I think we will be hearing a lot about this in 2017. We need to develop more natural ways of living instead of artificial unstable ways.
    Fosile fuel is the first tipe of energy we have learnt from the Fire Age and we are stuck with this. Mining is good but recycling is better.

    Old news Mining is going on on the Moon and has been for years, in the LROC photo of the Daedalus Crater over the far side there is a recess with a vehicle sitting there the crater is around 40Km across so the scale is very small but zoom in and it is clear to see, Comet 67P is also being mined look for the Imhotep region shots and there is clear proof of vehicles mine entrances and crane jibs, how much proof do you want. We need to start examining ALL photos from LROC and ESA in minute detail to see whats really going on. Aristarchus Crater low angle shot from LROC shows a tressle bridge carrying a pipeline at the 11 0'clock position, again the crater is around 40km across so these things look small. @ExplainingTheFuture  2 роки тому +1

      A very good question. As far as we know, the helium-3 on the moon is distributed everywhere in the lunar top soil. But it is also possible that there will be regions where there is more than at other places, and/or it is easier to extract.

      Can you please give me your thoughts on what this is in & around the Shackleton crater? I have about every possible angle now, & this is Definitely not an anomaly. I believe we may be seeing a lens effect due to the shape of the clear dome over the site, which makes this look larger than it actually is?

    Supplies? What does earth have that moon doesn't? Mining on earth is difficult, damaging and dangerous. Lots resources on moon may not even need much energy to process, completely outclassing earth production and did I mention delivery is just about all down hill.

    For an investment of much less than the US debt we can power the world 20TW (we need only 17 TW) using solar power. Why bother lowering their eroie even lower and pushing the net energy level so low as not to be worthwhile? Where is the commercial angle here? What advantage does this have when sterilization is so much cheaper?

    Nice show Mr, but as a 2014 earth dweller, i cant help but wonder if such a far fetched future could in fact become a reality, dont get me wrong, if we account for current and soon to come sound technologies and develepments IT CAN BE POSIBLE, BUT, knowing mankind, keeping an eye on man history and also keeping the other in the current present when all politicians ignore science and our wellbeing doing nothing to resolve our enviromental problems like the new plastic contiment floating in the pacific ocean as an example or reactions to the impendant global warming, can we still be naive enough to actually believe we can have a brighter future ahead of us? i think not, but what do u think?

    • @ExplainingTheFuture
      @ExplainingTheFuture  10 років тому +3

      I totally get where you are coming from -- there is no guarantee that we will achieve this kind of thing. But I think we have more chance of doing large-scale projects like Moon or asteroid mining, or building solar power satellites, than of convincing billions of individuals to change their lifestyles to consume fewer resources, cut their carbon emissions by 70 per cent plus, etc. In effect, in the coming decades we either need to do a lot less, or to stretch ourselves to achieve a great deal more. And I like to think that at least the latter will be possible. Let's live in hope!

    • @LordMephistoteles
      @LordMephistoteles 10 років тому

      well in fact science has already studied stadistically our moment in history, which predicts an eventual fall of the western civilization, may be 'cuz of war or another reason. In any case science is without limitations, the know how is already there, the nasa guys did it once backed by the us goverment budget, we are in the verge of achieving even greater goals backed by huge possible profits by private companies. i guess you are right to spread a message of hope in this sceneario and many others that are yet to come

    Why is it that the neutron producing fusion, using deuterium, is harder to contain than the proton producing fusion, using Helium-3?

    • @ExplainingTheFuture
      @ExplainingTheFuture  10 років тому

      Because a neutron is not a charged particle, and hence has no possibility for electromagnetic containment. :)

    lol perhaps that's why NASA wants to go there first then. to get their hands on that helium 3. I mean it's totally logical to want to go to the moon first because it's close and we can practice in case of emergency. but things are usually more than meets the eye where the government is concerned.

    Im all for space mining but not for fuel sources.... Electric is everything im over paying for it... But we can dig for minerals in space like diamonds ect and leave our planet alone. What we need to do is mine the astroid belt by mars while re colonizing that planet and then set up all the factories and mills on the moon for processing and keep OUR planet as clean as possible.

    Scarcity can be over come much easier in a new social system that takes into account the well being of humans and the environment first by utilizing technology and the Scientific Method. This social system is called a Natural Law Resourced Based Economy.
    Capitalism actually is hindering our progress as a species as we speak. It's usefulness has about reached it's peak, time to move on and evolve as a species and stop playing this game of wealth and acquisition which as left the majority of people behind. With our current knowledge and technology we can create a world of abundance for all.

    Nice video. I am curious though as to how you would stop asteroid and comets from impacting a hypothetical moon base? surely a corporation would want to protect it's assets on the moon. Are impacts a common occurrence? I mean the lunar craters are littered all over the surface as a result of impacts. You seem clued up on the subject, I would appreciate your insight.
