    STORYLINE:
An initial batch of 100 Malaysian soldiers arrived in Lebanon on Tuesday to join a United Nations (UN)peacekeeping mission.
The 100 soldiers, comprising of eleven officers and 89 men of various ranks from the army, navy and air force, received a briefing at an air force base before being driven to the Kuala Lumpur International Airport for their flight to Beirut.
According to an official from the Malaysian defence ministry, 260 more soldiers are due to leave Malaysia for Lebanon on 15 January.
All 360 soldiers will be based at the headquarters of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), in Naqoura to serve in the district of Marjayoun.
They will be replaced by a second group after six months.
The mission's deputy commander, Lieutenant colonel Fadzil Tajuddin, said the contingent had undergone two months of special preparatory training, including lessons in the Arabic and English languages.
Malaysia had said it is willing to send as many as one thousand troops to help implement UN resolution 1701, which halted 34-days of fighting between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah guerrillas on 14 August 2006.
Under the resolution, a strengthened UN peacekeeping force of up to 15-thousand troops is to be deployed in south Lebanon, along with the Lebanese army, to assert control over south Lebanon and to prevent arms from reaching Hezbollah.
UNIFIL announced earlier this month that its strength has surpassed the 11-thousand mark with participation from 23 countries.
