It's crazy how much AGOT gets forgotten when talking about card games. It survived for about 5 years as a CCG, which is a lot longer than most games, then it had a good 12 year run as an LCG between the end of first ed and second ed. Dune is the perfect reskin for this game, just change the power to spice and it works completely.
Worth noting that there is a community driven project continuing the game (similar to NISEI for Netrunner), it just earlier in its development and hasn't had a smooth start. They are doing Restricted/banned list updates and working on new cards as well.
Literally my first card game (I am not counting poker, drinking games, rummy, coup, hearts or trick taking games). Once I finally got my head wrapped around it by 3-4th play and it all started clicking into place, it was so satisfying. You start seeing cards through a different lens, rather than thinking what card to play - start thinking how can I be more efficient, what cards work well together, what is my opponents strength and how to counter them and then before you know it, i started doing the whole - playing this that allows me to tap this, to play this to then get 2 coins that i then spend on this ambush card that taps this card that gives me influence which means the other card also gets it and now im ready for the combat challenge...
@@teamcovenant Thanks! Just wondering - is it too late to start collection expansions for GOT, or is it basically at the end of its life and I should hold out until FFG makes a new Duel LCG or even maybe 3rd edition?
Thrones 2nd edition was my entry into modern competitive card games. Before, I was all in on board games but hearing that FFG was rebooting the game just sucked me like no other. I played a good 2 years before my son was born and thoroughly enjoyed going to store championships, regionals, and weekly meet ups slinging Thrones with like minded fans. I'm not even sure how I stumbled upon it, probably due to me loving FFG games at the time (LOTR and Imperial Assault) but this game still has a place in my heart that hasn't been replaced by anything else. It definitely feels clunky after playing some newer games but I agree with TC's assessment - the plot and challenge icon mechanic is unmatched and just so much cooler than standard monster card battlers. Being able to attack on 3 different fronts is just a breath of fresh air and really mixes things up. Probably the biggest negative for the game though was the massive challenge math by rounds 2 or 3 that can sometimes happen. Makes my brain hurt and I'm just not as young as I used to be to be able to math out all the best permutations of moves within a decent time frame. Someday I'd like to go back to where I left off (3rd cycle) and pick up from there since I missed out on like 3 cycles of content after that but not sure who I would ever play with. Maybe my son once he grows up hah.
I think if the LCGs had more marketing they'd do better as a model, because I know PLENTY of people who don't play TCGs anymore despite loving them simply because they cannot afford the shocking investment to maintain it, but none of them will ever hear about LCGs. It's sad that we live in a world where the LCG model doesn't work as well as the TCG model, because it's fairly obvious which one is better for the players and for the game.
Oh man, you woke some nice memories while talking about 1.0. My girlfriend (now wife) and I played it and enjoyed it so much. The 2.0 didn't click with us, although I went all in and bought 3x Core set immediately.
1.0 was amazing, such fond memories. Likewise 2.0 never clicked with me. The alliance cards really threw me off, and it was the only way to build a proper deck for some time.
Going off the conversation in the video, if you could only pick one card game to play past or present which one would you pick? Would love to know what your guys all time favorite is!
I absolutely love this game I have every single card lol… wish it had more of an audience. More people need to get into the books to truly appreciate thrones.
The post-game discussion was really interesting. I can't say I'm a fan of the pick 5 cards for your starting hand Ashes approach. I'm not sure why. I guess I want that initial randomness and surprise. But at the same time I completely agree with what Zach was saying about Magic style games where 30-40% of the time you have a compelling game because both players starting hands were comparably strong/weak. However I'm sure some players prefer the Ashes approach, and it probably does make for a more consistent experience. Taking those observations together, I wonder what you all think of this idea: A starting deck. You draw your opening hand from your starting deck, perhaps taking a mulligan. After which, the starting deck is shuffled into the main deck, which will be used for the remainder of play. How is the starting deck constructed? Well now we can start to make things interesting. We can introduce faction/house/identity/character specific rules for the creation of starting decks. The starting deck size as well as the cards which can be included in the starting deck can be varied depending on the rules for your chosen faction/character. For example, some kind of sci-fi robotic faction might actually have starting deck rules very similar to Ashes' pick 5, and have a limited selection of cards from which the starting deck can be constructed. On the other end of a spectrum, imagine a barbarian faction that has far more swinginess in their starting deck with the potential for really bad and really great starting hands. And then everything in between. The rules for each faction's starting deck can create a theme and narrative for the start of the game, and also allow players to tailor their experience to their preferences. Essentially, create a mechanism to smooth out the randomness of the initial draw to the degree preferred by the player, while also furthering the game's theme.
Hey Domenick, great thoughts. We were mulling on something akin to this over in our Discord channel's Game Design channel. If you're not in, you might find a lot of value there: cov.link/discord
The plot mechanic is genius and what really made me love the game. 2nd to that the 3 challenge system and power win con really made this game unique and very strategic. Sad that this game ended. Edit: wouldn’t be a proper video without mentipning taylor swift :) the thing that kind of balanced the lannisters was that they were supposed to be weak in the power department
@@danacoleman4007 Thats really good news, i always immediately dismissed this game upon hearing i would need to buy multiple core sets to be able to play. Thanks
They really dropped the ball with the second edition. The first game was brilliant. They’ve also fumbled in the sector overall by failing to transition these games to commercial digital games.
I stumbled upon this while looking up the game, as I adore Lord of the Rings LCG and just learned Arkham Horror LCG. I love Game of Thrones and want a game that works for two players in the IP (my wish is that PAX Renaissance will get a GoT retheme, since it is all about players pulling strings a la Varys and Littlefinger). Anyway, one issue I find is that while I have started reading the books, the show is my first and only real experience with the story, as it is for most people I know who might be interested in a GoT game. So kind of how my husband looks at Legolas in Lord of the Rings LCG and says “wait, why does he have dark hair?”, this game would potentially throw him off if there are characters from the books not in the show, or completely different artwork for characters. Do you think this card game sort of aligns with the show well enough that show-only fans would appreciate the theme? Thanks in advance!
It's definitely a more conceptual style pulled from the books. Daenerys isn't going to look like Emilia Clarke, for instance. But it's certainly not completely different. Do a google search of a few main characters with "Game of Thrones Second Edition LCG" and see if you think it'd be too jarring.
One of my biggest problems with 2nd edition was the inclusion of Night's Watch as one of the factions vying for the Iron Throne, when thematically the Night's Watch doesn't involve itself in the politics of the realm. Always thought they should have been replaced by House Arryn.
Just not enough meat and taters for House Arryn. Same with House Tully. I feel like they were lucky too eek out a Bara House. Non unique R’hollor characters, anyone? Just my 2cents
Update on the package 📦 it is estimated to be delivered on the 14th on Monday. Really screwy with the flip flopping. Anyways, I hope you guys enjoy it and we can see the unboxing on the video stream.

I would definitely be down for a Dune LCG. I never knew there was an old Dune card game but unfortunately it's massively expensive.
