  • Hello! Welcome to Mart's Garage. When I first got the T-Bird running over 30 years ago I couldn't get the carb to work in it's original state. I had to substitute parts from a later carb and just run on two barrels. Having recently got it running again, I felt it was time to put things right. Or at least try. Follow me in my quest to troubleshoot the original parts and get them reunited with the car. In this video, I make a remote starter switch and make some progress on reinstating the secondaries. I also start looking at the choke. Future videos will show the difference the 4 barrels have made plus the distributor will get some attention to the advance mechanism.
    I Hope you enjoy this offering. Don't forget: Keep it real! Keep it cheap!
    Thanks for joining me once again in Mart's Garage.

    My goodness - you don't fail to surprise - from the Ford ( Prefect)? to a T - Bird!

      Yeah both ends of the spectrum. Thanks for watching and commenting.

      @MartsGarage You said that having a Ford Prefect, AND a T - Bird were "both ends of the spectrum"
      Because it's a long time ago now - I was forgetting it was EXACTLY the same for ME, in the 80's and 90's!
      I had what was perhaps Britain' MOST commonplace car, and another that has always been the RAREST!
      I had a beige Allegro, and went shopping in it to EPSOM. There was parking in the high street, and when I left the shopping centre to return to my car - I thought: "Oh, that's surprising - I thought I parked my car further along the High Street. But I must be mistaken" . As I approached the car, I noticed it had a brick- red interior, which mine was not. So I continued along the High Street, and saw what I assumed MUST be mine, then - but it too had a brick red interior. So I continued right to the END of the High Street, and eventually found MY beige Allegro.(with an oxtail soup - brown interior!)
      AND I achieved my lifelong dream since childhood , of ALSO owning the 2nd model of Karmann - Ghia, the RAZOR-EDGE, as people call it, on account of it's "sharp" creases in the body style - which , come to think of it , the Hillman Imp Imp also had! A car SO rare, I only ever saw TWO, until I joined the owners club, who found one for ME!
      If you don't know this car, you can check it out on the internet, under it's official title, of Type 34 Karmann-Ghia.
      (Mine, incidentally, was a white one, with a black hardtop)

      @@nygelmiller5293 Great story. I had the same with a red SD1 2000. Not a common car but there was an identical one parked a few cars down from mine on Weston seafront. I couldn't work out why my key had stopped working.

      Yes.. I sometimes look at the AACA forum and there is a member there called Carb King and what he doesn't know about carbs isn't worth knowing. Always good source of info and experience for troubleshooting.

    Good work Mart! I haven't gotten that far into my carb, which I think is a 4150. The main trouble I've had is keeping the O-rings from leaking on the secondary feed tube and I had the secondary float to stick open and flood the carb. Got those two issues fixed and it's been a good carb.

    Excellent work on the carb Mart, reckon it's the M6 toll for a good test of the 4 barrels (evenings, especially weekends now the clocks have gone forward are a good time and the toll has a hard shoulder unlike some of the other motorways), good thing you sorted the vacuum chamber (am i right in assuming the primary throttle lever just "knocks" the secondary lever open if you floor the accelerator but if the engine is working hard (high vacuum say going uphill the vac chamber pulls the secondaries open to give a bit more oomph) as it might have been disappointed about the difference having the extra 2 barrels, i've heard a very similar saying about experts, which is "experts know ever more about ever less"

    • @MartsGarage
      @MartsGarage  5 місяців тому

      Hi Steve. I am by no means an expert on these, but my understanding is that the little link ensures the secondaries stay shut when the primaries are shut. I don't think they get knocked open by anything. I don't know which part of the carb develops vacuum to pull the diaphragm to open the secondaries but the system must be self regulating and only open as much as required. It's a bit of a mystery to me, but I do know nothing gets knocked open. Double pumper manual secondary carbs with no vac are different of course. Take care, bud, see you soon.

    Gotta say I always love watching your videos and your calm delivery even when shyt happens, in the last video I noticed a couple of things , your fan belt is too lose, and the cars reg you tyke :), when I had an MGB in the UK if it wasn't snowing the top was down, of course people thought I was nuts but I probably am.It was great to be a passenger riding along in the car, but boy is you petrol expensive, although I am sure if the current idiot in the white house has his way we will fly past your cost.
    YEEEEHAA you finally lost your rag :)

    sometimes you have to bite the bullet buy a Reco kit that vacuum mechanism should make a sucking noise when you push the lever in and out a new kit of gaskets etc then you wont look back as long as carby valve bodies not warped too

    Hi Mart, great to see you have sorted the carby. Is there any reason why you don't have a pipe to the vacuum advance unit?

    • @MartsGarage
      @MartsGarage  5 місяців тому

      Hi Byron. Yeah, the points plate was faulty and I used to get bad rattles when suddenly applying the throttle. I found if I disconnected the advance and locked down the points plate it stopped the rattles. I will fix it in a future video.

    With your remote start button, you might consider the consequences if it was to start with the auto box in drive or reverse.
