- In this video, I have shared my experience in understanding the Importance of Salinity and Minerals in Vannamei Shrimp Farming in Biofloc Technology. Salinity plays a very critical role in Biofloc System, it's not only responsible for maintaining the percentage of salt in the water but also other required minerals.
So what do you mean by Salinity of Water? The salinity of Water means the percentage or amount of salt present in the water. Basically, when we add salt into the Biofloc Water our intension is that it will help to protect aquatic animals from parasites, bacteria and fungal infections prevent Nitrite injection into the immune system and stress reliever. But apart from that, there are other important things it adds to the water.

Thanks for highlighting the need to take central and state approval for Vanamei shrimp farming. I have heard about it but it's not very clear from the CAA website about the process and does not mention rules for biofloc. Additionally, it also says you need a complete project report to request for license. It will be good if you throw some light in that direction, may be a video on this topic once you have more information

Hi Parida, good video here, just a few comments, the mineral requirements also depend on the stocking density of PL. Some shore lines may have fluctuations on the mineral concentration. Still need to check before using it as the sea water is open source as well as the tide may carry different mineral at a time.
Yes sea water has required minerals in it but when you will do high density additional supplements are required.

@@RoadtoBioFloc actually it is formulated according to one of the Japanese universities research. It has all the major minerals and trace elements in proper proportion for shrimps. You can use 0.5 to 5 ppm as per requirement in biofloc tank (BFT) or larval rearing tank (LRT)

Yes you can do that way if sea is not nearer to you. Before you use it on production tank, get check all the basic minerals presence in water, if it excess you need to bring down to the desired level

Sea Water all the required minerals, so depending upon which salinity level you maintain and stocking density, you may or may not need additional supplement of minerals

Why the growth is lower in high salinity water compare with low salinity water?
There could several other factors impacting the growth. Before commenting on this need to understand the your water parameters.
Higher salanity will have higher minerals and resulting in higher hardness and also higher alkalinity, which is not favorable for column feeders like vannamei. Higher salinity will cause mainly motling, bacterial and vibrio spp problems. It can also make pond management more difficult and expensive.

Basically in this video, I was trying to show the difference between low and high salinity of water. In seawater, normal values of alkalinity are about 140 mg/l, while hardness is about 6,000 mg/l. Once the seawater is collected, basically it undergoes for treatment to remove unwanted things. And the as the water hardness level is very high, again it can be bring down the required level of hardness. I will be making few videos on this, how to process seawater to use in biofloc system.
