    Would just like to point out that stress here is expressed as P/A which usually implies pressure over area. Though, stress is defined as force over area. Could this 'P' actually mean potential rather than pressure?

      Hi Shaun,
      sometimes P is used as a label for force, as in this case. I think the context should make it clear, and the diagrams. Pressure over area would not make physical sense, as you mention. I will label P as a force more clearly next time.
