Singularity was amazing. This guy and Alex Banks are KILLING it. His set up - three chaos pads??? - he makes it look easy. One of the most entertaining producers to watch live.
Just caught him in NYC live. Incredible. It's not easy to take the style of music he's doing and make it interesting live, but he pulls it off. I just stood there shaking my head. He's brilliant.
Props to Jon Hopkins. Full disclosure....I get jealous as hell when I see people doing bad ass stuff with equipment I own. It means I'm wasting time doing something else....like surfing online. :)
Watching him use the KP's this way changed my whole setup; not doing the same thing he is, but his tricks got me up and running in a different direction. We learn from the pros and keep going. Even he had to learn what to do with his stuff from other people, such as Brian Eno.
@@Ionbreathflow They look like Korg Kaoss Pad effect processors. I own one myself, and it's fascinating to see exactly how such an established artist utilizes them for performance. Seems to be a lot of stutter, reverb, distortion effects, expertly timed and blended.
Such a visionary! i love electronic music since i was young, now I'm 46 and i love this! I see Jonh like one of the most important pioneers for the future of techno. These beautiful pieces of art are ahead of his time almost 10 years! thanks, Jonh Hopkins! keep your fantastic music!
❤❤❤I have never seen anything like it...that is 100% positive and I mean it with all my heart! I have loved magical electronic music for over 20 years and I have been able to get to know so many masterpieces by absolute heroes and these musicians are unique and touching to me in their own way. But the way Jon Hopkins gives us his works is unique!! I am so in love with his style❤❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉
And he doesn't even sync everything with midi clock !!!! Says it makes keeping everything in time a bit more challenging 😃 Jon Hopkins is a genius of our time. I'm sure he will be remembered as a master, like a modern day Mozart.
To those that say the Kaoss pad is a toy or not very good- I say check out this guy. He has mastered the gear to level of being a musical instrument not just an effects unit. Fabulous.
yup, any tool in the right person's hands can become epic. I mean give me a chainsaw and I'll chop down a dead tree but there are people who will carve marvels from the same husk with the same tool.
FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His performance at The Echoplex simply blew me away. It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to and I have been to hundreds!
whenever i see really technical and artistic performances in electronic music im baffled by the fact that there are fucking twats out there who jump up and down like hyperactive kangaroos and can barely mix two songs together properly without fucking it up. Of course im comparing two different genres but the difference in standards is shameful
When i watch him doing madness on 3 kaoss pads i'm ashamed that i have one for years, and dont use is as it could be used. Killer machine, killer Hopkins.
I pretty much understand how everything is getting processed cause the three kaoss pads have their own thing being fed to each. I know tracks are split into all the three. My question is, how the hell do you set up a live set like this. I know it's all based on Live, but damn. Still waiting for the day that I see him live
+Carbon Nerve - I found an interview with Jon Hopkins in which he say this regarding his live set-up:- "I have Ableton running, controlled by a Livid controller, then I have the drums coming into one Kaoss Pad, which then goes straight into another one. i have the bass and riffs coming into a third, then the melodies and atmospheres coming into the fourth. these then all go into the Pioneer." Hope this helps - I was very interested to find this myself so thank you for setting me off on the hunt.
neugestalt it's cool, I think I read an interview about his setup several months back. So from what I understand, the Kaoss pads are chained until they reach the Mixer. Like I wouldn't mind making a setup like this since it's more hands on than just using a traktor control S8. It's really fun to mix on the tractor, but most of the time I feel like i'm not doing much.
+Carbon Nerve Agreed - I like the idea of the Kaoss Pads - It's certainly far more interesting to watch than someone making microscopic moves on a tiny controller beside a laptop.
the man knows his equipment and tracks inside out. He is feeling the music from within no doubt.
+Lauren nice
A fucking modern day Mozart. Hopkins is a musical genius.
agreed.
one of the best music producers of our time!! can't wait for the rest of his career
it's turning out great!
i mean.... idk man
Singularity was amazing. This guy and Alex Banks are KILLING it. His set up - three chaos pads??? - he makes it look easy. One of the most entertaining producers to watch live.
Right! This guy shines
Im listening to him from 2006.. And was once at his live in Tbilisi. "Contact note" is very deep album also.
It's almost unfair how talented he is...
Just caught him in NYC live. Incredible. It's not easy to take the style of music he's doing and make it interesting live, but he pulls it off. I just stood there shaking my head. He's brilliant.
If youtube were invented just for this one video to exist and be available for all eternity, then it was more than worth it.
Amen !
I often come back to watch this again, it's so incredible, both the song and his performance
Stone the crows. This is ridiculous. Takes me to another dimension... Am popping my Jon Hopkins “live” cherry next week. Oooooh 🤩
Props to Jon Hopkins. Full disclosure....I get jealous as hell when I see people doing bad ass stuff with equipment I own. It means I'm wasting time doing something else....like surfing online. :)
Daetwan Williams keep goin man!!!
Watching him use the KP's this way changed my whole setup; not doing the same thing he is, but his tricks got me up and running in a different direction. We learn from the pros and keep going. Even he had to learn what to do with his stuff from other people, such as Brian Eno.
Daetwan Williams could you list out the gear he’s using if you don’t mind .... what are those main controllers he’s using?

his music, along very few honestly soulful producers globally, is a spiritual experience
watching the way his hands move is EPIC

Gonna see his show in Melbourne in 3 days. Should be outstanding.
BBC Six Music play Jon Hopkins a lot. I feel after watching him perform it's added something to the music for me.
Nice pfp. We need a new wipeout game soon
And he doesn't even sync everything with midi clock !!!! Says it makes keeping everything in time a bit more challenging 😃
Jon Hopkins is a genius of our time. I'm sure he will be remembered as a master, like a modern day Mozart.
Love the interview on the full performance show. "So Jon what have you been up to?" He should of replied "off being fuckin' awesome making this album"
To those that say the Kaoss pad is a toy or not very good- I say check out this guy. He has mastered the gear to level of being a musical instrument not just an effects unit. Fabulous.

Seeing him play live last week was honestly one of the best performances I have been too!
Seriously?! Some guys are so good it’s devastating. What an amazing set up.
New albums gonna be siiiiiiick.
Watching this live session is so entertaining..I always keep hitting my keyboard the way he hits those pads while watching this video.. :D
FUCK YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! His performance at The Echoplex simply blew me away. It was one of the best concerts I have ever been to and I have been to hundreds!

Bruh. He's such a genius.
How can someone dislike this?!
So this is what a real electronic musician looks like
Alex Banks has a real similar style - set up. Not QUITE as good as this guy, but .... I think Hopkins might be the best out there. At the moment.

Just love to see how he plays the Kaoss pads

+Carbon Nerve Now his live set-up uses 4 Kaoss Pads
+Carbon Nerve I was wondering exactly the same thing - and would absolutely love to know. It was very interesting to watch in any case.
