- A new device to the market that just started shipping this month is the openSPOT3 MMDV-type DV device from SharkRF. The original openSPOT and newer openSPOT2 were very hot items in the market for a long time, and are still used today by many ham radio operators. Enter the new version, the openSPOT3, which incorporates and internal battery and the ability to cross-talk between DMR and DSTAR, making it the first hotspot with such a feature.

Hey Jason. I make this comment respectfully. The frequency you have set in your hotspot is in the satellite portion of the band plan and may interfere with them. Thanks for the video on the hotspot! I enjoy your videos always! Keep up all the great work you are doing. Its motivating.
Understood, good to know. I usually use 434.450 but I didn't want to setup 2 hotspots on the same freq. I will make a note not to use 435.450 though.

C4FM Half deviation is half of DN mode, and strips location, error correction, and late entry from the mode to squeeze it into half the bandwidth. WV mode is almost twice the bandwidth of DN, has less error correction than DN and also doesn't support late entry.
In order to see the wireless menus in the openspot2 ( they are there), you have to check advanced mode at the bottom right of the Os2 page.
Cross mode into p25 using C4FM voice wide. No one will hear you if your radio is set on DN. A good talkgroup to try is 10200 North America.

The OS2 was upgraded since it was new, I think they added those wireless menus later, but you are correct - they are there now.
You should check the Nanospot. Unlike the openspot where you have to access your hotspot to change modes, the nanospot can be set up to scan dmr, dstar, c4fm and p25. You don’t have to change modes manually like you have to with the openspot. It is all done via the pi star network. Mark kb3z
I did a video on the Nanospot a couple of years ago when it was new. The Pi-Star hotspots are basically all the same. In Pi-Star you don't actually change modes the way you are describing, you just enable the modes you want to use, then they are ready to go with whatever radio you pickup.

Interesting hot spot
Thank you for your time trying to make a helpful video. As someone who hardly knows anything about DMR and hotspots ect. for someone thinking of getting one of the openspot 3's setup as you showed leaves me very spooked up and scared. All the unknown troubles you had at times scares newbie people badly. N4TUX Boyd.
Reviewed several You Tube videos on the OpenSpot 3, yours is the best to-date. Would like to see Kenwood D74 to DMR on Anytone 878. I finally have my Openspot 3 working thanks to you.

Great video, however, had problems with OS3, had one for two weeks, worked first time, then started acting up. Got SharkRF involved, they claimed nothing wrong, said it was my network. Strange, I have an OS2 sitting in the same spot working great! after several iterations of "I am Stupid" from them, (30 years as a network designer and engineer), and several factory resets to 0, I sent it back. Maybe I had a lemon or defective unit, but SharkRF refused to acknowledge that it could have been a bad one. I guess I will wait for product to mature. Buyer Beware!
All anyone shows is how to set it up, not why we should buy one; functionality, utility, cases. We know it's cross mode, we knew that already. What I don't get is A) it has to be configured to rooms on a computer screen (implies at ham shack), and B) it has to have wifi (implies at ham shack.) But C) in my shack (and my truck) I don't use HT's.
These videos all show it using HT's? Whats the point for the shack or mobile when we don't use HT's? Wish someone would go beyond a setup with HT in hand, and show why we'd actually want one and how to use it with our gear (non-HT.)
Hotspots are meant for folks who use HTs and don't have repeaters near-by. If you are running a mobile radio, use a repeater. No reason to use a hotspot with a mobile radio unless you are on a road trip (and I have videos where I've already done this, FYI) But 99% of folks using a hotspot...which is low-power, about ~400mw...use an HT. No reason to pump 25-50 watts into a 400mw hotspot.

See that’s where I “think” (not sure) that in this case - atop all the surface level tendencies of UA-cam videos - that’s incorrect. My ham shack radio and mobile radio cannot do cross mode... OF COURSE there’s a desire/need for shack/mobile cross mode. The shallow UA-cam videos just don’t ... well I’ll be nice and stop there.
@@tomw5vlt119 well this was video number 1. I've already got another video recorded for cross mode. If I make a longer video, UA-cam doesn't like it as well. People's attention spans are too short. So I take a subject and split it into multiple videos instead of one long one.

Look forward to it. Honestly for me, we don’t need 10 videos from every video provider all (skimming) showing the same set up with an HT in hand.
At the end of the day, the audience should walk away with “I can go do that” with the dots connecting - and so few videos by anyone do that.
Instead they leave people with a dozen critical questions that people have to go research to really be actionable. And the reality is, with all the.shallow videos landing each day from content providers (radio is not baking a cake and requires more thought to connect dots for viewers), we can’t keep up with all the videos leaving core questions hanging unexplained.
And in this case, by the end of the video, I don’t even know how this can work from any angle with my shack or mobile; which while I own HTs, I never use them because I’ve got great radios in my shack and truck.
Well you're amongst the minority then. Both with the fact that you don't use HTs, and with wanting longer videos. Over 2 Billion people on UA-cam and you're the only one who has requested a hotspot/mobile video be made. You make it sound like everyone wants this, but the reality is that most people think they're opinions are the only valid ones requesting videos. What I do is appeal to the masses and try to accommodate people who appreciate the content I put up, not insult it
Great stuff..quick question? I assumed that if the unit can't find a preconfigured wifi connection that it automatically goes back into "setup mode" and rebroadcasts its own signal to connect and configure a new profile? Thanks ahead of time! 73 Ken WX1TEX

Hi Jason I just got mine last week. Does this device save WiFi profiles (SSID's) ? After you setup your home WiFi , Then lets say I go mobile and want to setup my Iphone. as another Internet source.. Does the device save these parameters ?
Yes it does. It is in the Network tab and I think you have to turn on Expert Mode to see it
Save you money!! Glad yours worked! mine died after 4 uses. All you get through product support is next to nothing, they won't admit that their product failed. I got told that my WIFI magically turned on "client isolation". I then took the open spot to 6 friends houses and got same lights that again support told me that was because of client isolation, even though while at 1 friends house I helped him put up 6 wireless cameras that were on this router that my open spot wouldn't talk to. Huh? Lastly I dug out my 4G cellular hot spot that the open spot was last mated to last June but surprise! Same lights telling me, according to support that I had client isolation enabled on my hot spot. I called the cellular company and surprise you can't turn it on in their hot spot!! SAVE YOUR MONEY, IF IT FAILS BE READY FOR HOURS AND I MEAN HOURS OF FRUSTRATION BEFORE YOU FINALLY THROW IN THE TOWELL.
For the complete newbie ... would u recommend this over HRO's or Bridgecoms? For simplicity .... I want to keep my hair.
BTW: my handheld (Yaesu 70dr). thinking of picking up the anytone because all the NY guys have picked one
up because of your vids ... All love them except for one who is not happy with Bridgecom's customer service.
I think the Openspot software is easier to use and more stable than anything running Pi-star, honestly. The Birdgecom and HRO hotspots are great quality and work very well, but I think the OS is a little easier to setup and navigate through the menus

I was looking for a hotspot, this might be the one! Thanks for your video Jason. But a question; I have an AT&T Unlimited high-speed LTE4 account running on a NightHawk M1 hotspot/router that I use to connect to the internet while traveling. Would that have enough bandwidth to handle the openSpot traffic in ideal phone conditions?
In ideal conditions, yes - you shouldn't have a problem. In areas where 4G is limited, you might have some drops. It really all depends on your location.
I'd like to get one. I can't find a site that sells them. Manufacturer wants $420 at current exchange rate. Any reasonable alternative options?

I did that with the original openspot and honestly, the menus haven't changed much. They had added several features and updates, etc - but overall, setup is the same. You can check the OS1 video on this channel, but I will also look at doing something with this new OS3 as well.
I have a TH-D74 and would be very interested to see a video on using the openSpot3 with DSTAR as well as cross banding with DMR and SystemFusion. I'm planning to purchase a hotspot in the near future and the OS3 appears to be more user friendly when compared to a raspberry pi based device like the ZUMSpot. I wanted to ask you a question concerning the placement of my OpenSpot3. I use the OS3 in my shack ONLY and always keep it plugged in. When it's not in use I keep it in NULL. It sits on a shelf in front of my MFJ auto tuner. I also have my HF radio in the shack as well as ladder line coming into the shack. My question is when I transmit on HF while in the shack, can RF damage the Open Spot3 in any way? I haven't yet gone on HF since receiving the OS3. I figured I would ask someone like yourself before I transmit. Any information concerning this question would be greatly appreciated. Be well.
There is probably a slim chance, but unlikely. It wouldn't affect the OS3 anymore than it might affect a VHF or UHF radio that might also be in your shack. If you have enough RF coming back into your shack from your HF rig due to poor choking or grounding, then you have a much larger issue than worrying about your OS3. I am not saying that is what you have, my point is that...if you have enough RF that can actually hurt the OS3, then your issue is with choking, RFI or Grounding and you should be focused on that. If you don't have any of those issues then your OS3 is just as safe as any other radio in the shack.

I cannot get my shark 3 to talk to the iPhone 13 or others.
I’ve spoke to Dan Arnold re above is there any videos on the setup of iPhone to shark 3 just to get the shark3 menu up the rest I know when I use it with a windows pc. Ernie G4LUE.

That doesn't have an internal battery or do cross-mode to DSTAR though. So it just depends on what you want to do.
@@HamRadio2 I have several powerbanks I can recharge with solar. I want to monitor groups not found on my local repeater. Fixed income ordering a bluetooth speaker microphone 17 inch antenna and a usb to 12 volt adapter for charging radio with banks and solar. Maybe next moth I will decide on a hot spot.

I always enjoy your videos, Always give you thumbs up. I did here. Very good review. You did no wrong but unfortunately change is killing my pocket book. I give up. I really am ready to kick the DV world in the head, sell all of my 2m and 70cm equipment including my hotspots and concentrate on HF. Even the HF bands that are dead are more alive than the popular rooms out there. Using the internet is just fake. Sorry. Even the analog repeaters are not being utilized in my area and there are a lot of them. Sad. I have even brought my radios to urban areas and found very little traffic.
Some people feel that way. You are not wrong even though I don't agree. ZELLO is fake. Using an RF radio to talk into a hotspot or repeater connected to the internet isn't fake because you can also use that same radio to talk Simplex directly to other radios. So as long as RF is involved, it is real radio, IMO. But it isn't for everyone. I certainly do enjoy HF quite a bit also.
@@HamRadio2 I guess I am bummed in our area at least the analog repeaters are dead and if there is a System Fusion repeater that can talk 40-50 miles it isn't even being used for doing any Wires-X communication and there are others around me that get upset that you switch a wires-x advertised repeater to wires-x for a while and the analog users are upset because they can't use the repeater that they don't use anyway. I went on HF this afternoon and met a whole bunch of hams some that lived only 6 miles away in sparsely populated SW Minnesota.
So you are right about the radio front end and the internet backbone that is maybe the only thing that is saving the HT and the hotspots right now. Thanks for saving my soul...
Jason, it's been a year since you reported on the openSPOT3. For ease of use, feature rich and, maximum DMR network flexibility, would you chose the openSpot3, SKYBridge Plus or, one of the Raspberry Pi turnkey products that are widely available?
If you're only using DMR, the Skybridge is dual band, where the OS3 is not. So it's more versatile with DMR.

Thanks for the reply Jason...Yeah, I guess I am pretty immature at this stuff.. just got my tech licence and exploring a bit... The OpenSpot 3 looks intriguing and maybe a route for Techs to tx beyond the local repeater.

I have worked at least 25 hours, tried factory reset, tried a firmare update. When I try to connect on the computer it sends me to msn. Why recommend such a difficult hotspot to setup. I have set up pi-star on many different modes it works. What can I do to not go bald from pulling my hair out.
Can this be used with any radio like a baofeng uv-5r or does it have to be a DMR radio? Thx for the video.
It needs a DMR/DSTAR/YSF radio. It can't translate analog

You must be a genuis, I have been trying 100-s of time to setup and wont. where can i send it to get it setup for my simlple needs a hotspot for the car when traveling tied to my cell phone hotspot. This is the hardest thing in my 58 years in compters.

I can get the welcome page and select US, then insert my wifi password then connects to my wifi, but never brings up the openspot local page to place data in the unit, call sign etc. It brings up the msn website?? Any suggestions Tnx Mike ke4kmg
After the unit connects to your local network, it is assigned a new IP and you have to reconnect to that IP instead of using the same connection where you entered the WiFI password.

You need a DMR radio. It will work with any DMR HT or mobile.
So you can only use DMR radio? I cant use my Yaesu FT3dr or icom ID-5100 with this?

I may need to see about trying one out as my travel hotspot. Currently using a battery-powered Pi-Star hotspot, however, the transcoding between D-Star would be a nice option to have, and the shark devices are very polished.

FYI: I just bought an Openspot 3 and wanted to pass along to all that the price of $299 plus $26 DHL shipping is in EURO’s! Actual cost in US dollars is $386.62! I didn’t realize this until I got the bill. Just wanted to clarify the actual price in case someone else doesn’t notice the €.
