  • See my new You Tube channel, "Aerobatics101", dedicated to RV-4 aerobatics. I have uploaded video demonstrations of each aerobatic maneuver to assist new guys in learning to fly aerobatics safely in RV aircraft.
This video is basic "sport" aerobatics in a Vans RV-4 with a 180 hp (Lycoming 0-360) engine and a Hartzell constant speed prop. All acro performed IAW FARs. Do no attempt without prior ground and flight instruction from a CFI. The RV-4 is a speed machine and can accelerate very quickly especially going down hill. You can exceed the limits of the aircraft in a heart beat so be careful.

Aerobatics in an RV are so much fun... and love the colour! 😎

There are a lot of RV pilots who have never spun their aircraft or flown aerobatics. There is very little info from Vans in the manual on aerobatics and spinning. So, in order to encourage RV pilots to have more fun and do it safely, I created this video. I got a lot of good response so I created another UA-cam channel, Aerobatics101, to demo each maneuver. Are they flown perfect? No. Are they flown safety with fun? Yes. Safe, fun, precision...in that order.

I learned to fly aerobatics where rudder was not required in the T-37 and T-38. We learned in a MOA up high. It took 10,000 feet of altitude in a T-38 to complete a loop. In my RV-4, it takes about 700'. It was not about precision for a competition, it was more about aircraft handling and energy management. In the F-16, aerobatics were not specifically taught. You'd mainly do it when on your own screwing off. However, basic aerobatics were the foundation for dive bombing or dogfighting.

Yes we got dispatched to do a recovery for a Lt. that killed himself (F16) in Spain (80's) returning from Aviano to Torrejon. Later heard it was preceded by goofing off. Left behind a wife and newborn. Sad...

Enjoyed this video and your channel. It helped me with my RV-4 acro after having not flown much acro the last few years. Having a blast. Thanks for posting.

The aft elevator pressure during the rolling maneuvers are causing the 10 -15 degree heading changes on the exit from the line. Completely neutral stick and a bit of foot work will cure that ;-) If you want to learn aerobatics please go do it in something that will make you work for it like a citabria, not a video, then go have a blast in your four!

Hi Acesaero ! I'm just found of your video ! I'm a young pilot in France. My dream is to become fighter pilot but i've to wait 2 more years to have the minimum legal age to engage in the French Air Force... I'm a RV lover and I just love your video ! Thank you very very much for posting great moment like this one it give us happy face !! :))
    Bye !

Nice video... My dad built and flew a RV-4, my plan is gettin a PPL in US next year and follow his fotsteps build my own RV-4! This Video is good inspiration!

I concur with the split S comment. In order to fly a perfect Split S with the hesitation as described below, you either have to have a lot of airspeed or jack the nose way up. I enter a Split S for safety and at a slow airspeed of 100 mph. Even with idle power and a 3.5G pull, the airplane gets close to the max airspeed. Because I'm so slow, it's impossible to make the crisp roll with a pause. So, it's either overspeed or pull more Gs. Fly safe.

All comments are appreciated and thanks for the inputs. The video was created for fun and to demo how to safety fly basic aerobatics in the RV-4. This is sport aerobatics for fun versus aerobatics for competition. The plane accelerates like a bat out of hell on the backside of an over the top maneuver so this video was designed to teach parameters that would help others stay out of trouble.

@stikmunkey fair enough, but I'm pretty sure the former (or maybe current) AF pilot knows how to correctly perform a split S.

The camera is mounted on the roll bar. In this video, I'm using a cheap Fiji Film digital camera. It takes terrible photos, but fairly good videos. The prop doesn't interfere with the video either...uncommon. However, this camera is from about 5 years ago and no longer available. I now use a GoPro SD camera and my next camera is the HD version. Should have gone with the HD version to begin with...

Great to watch. Am looking at getting a 4, 160HP FP prop, easier to maintain & lighter. Shall then do an advanced aero course, my poor old 7ECA is fun but painful to recover height loss!:-(

Thanks for the video. I am getting my license soon and trying to choose between an RV4 and an 8. Any chance you could answer a few questions for me? I'm based in California and training in New Zealand mostly on a 152 aerobat with the occasional stint in a Pitts Special S2B when the wallet can handle it. You are flying exactly in the niche I want to fly in... Freestyle aerobatics! Thanks again for the video. Cheers

Awesome video. Do you still have the Aerobatics 101 channel? I can't find it...fellow RV-4 pilot.

Aircraft engine is a Lycoming 0-360 with a Hartzell constant speed prop. The RV-4 is a good aircraft for fun and sport aerobatics versus competitive aerobatics. Speed on the backside of an over-the-top maneuver is difficult to keep below 200 mph unless you're pushing the G limit. Continuous aileron rolls are difficult to accomplish due to energy. The purpose of this video was to demonstrate fun and safety versus perfect acro. Enjoy.

How did you mount your camera? Roller bar? What mount did you use? Love the angle.

Do you have any experience with RV-8? How would you compare performance of the RV-4 to the RV-8? I'm looking at building a RV-8.
Excellent demonstration. Didn't realize RV-4 had that type of takeoff performance.

@narfmasta I do fly the full size...thanks for your negative assumption! What I am saying is that during maneuver such as the split-S there should be small hesitation after the half roll before the pull, etc...Also the deviation in altitude. Anyway, it's an RV not and Extra, and this is not competition aerobatic but I'm just saying!
