I've always loved 'unconventional' distortion sounds...never would have thought the Tube Pilot would end up on my GAS list. Great demo too, you sold me on it.
I have this pedal, and I second Ryan's comments. It's great and unique-sounding. Pay attention to the power source: the pedal needs 400 mA and less than that leads to problems, particularly the pedal flickering in and out of power. This is not a flaw of the pedal--the tube simply has higher power requirements, as I understand it. Don't do what I did, which is just grab a power cable coming out of my Voodoo Labs Pedal Power and blindly plug it in. If you have any weird performance issues, check to make sure your power source is delivering what the pedal requires. mA requirement is written on the pedal, and should also appear on your power source.
Mine got really warm because I didn't pay attention to that lol! Nothing harsh happened, but I recently saw a review on Reverb with "9V 400ma" as the title. Thank you for this comment, it's a crucial reminder for a good pedal to sound its best!
just ordered one of these, going to try it with my Plexitone and Boss NS-2. Back in 1989 ran a Baby Marshall through a 1967 Gibson tube amp. Palm mutes were rattling the rivets of the pavilion we were playing under. was making these chuUNG chuUNG sounds, had the hairs on our arms moving. awesome day.
Bought one of these a few weeks ago. Thought it was okay, but out of curiosity i decided to swap the stock Bugera valve with an old Sovtek one... best decision ever! Absolute girthy grindage in all frequencies! Even sounds epic on bass. Highly recommend upgrading the valve to others who have this pedal.
"Never thought I'd like a tube pedal." - Every guitar player professes their love affair for tube amps and the magic of tubes, then immediately proceeds to put a solid state box in front of it... I'm just messing with you, but it is kind of ironic lol.
60 Cycle Hum I'm the same way, like the reliability and loud cleans of a solid state, but enjoy a tube like overdrive. In the past I have used a tym 2002 fuzz, but it's become a quite rare and expensive pedal by todays standards. Might give this a go if I can find one in my town to test.
@ Manny M Couldn't agree more. we play tube amps cuz they're tubes and we put 10 SS pedals in front of them and expect what? - a better tube tone? At that point your just amplifying pedal circuits with a tube based tone generator. I use the tube Drive pedals exclusively now and have gotten rid of my 5 or so SS Screamer or Drive pedals. I also use a Weber Mass attenuator to get my power tubes working for tone as well. The smaller my rig the better the tone - has been my direction. Good pick-ups, A good tube pedal,, Low wattage Class A amps, and a Weber Mass and I'm a happy guy watching others drag around a $1K pedalboard or 2. Seems crazy to me but the retailers are happy. Do like the Oceans 11 Reverb pedal - a keeper that one!
I get what you mean, but generally the reason people are sceptical about valves in pedals is because they're not usually being run at the proper voltage. That said, it does seem to be possible to get some good sounds out of starved plate designs, but it's definitely different from high voltages in a valve amp.
I bought this pedal a few months ago, and I really, really like it...like, a LOT! I use it as more of a "sweetener" (like the original Butler Tube Driver, in other words) than for actual "dirt," with the effect level between nine and ten o'clock and the volume up around two o'clock. It's great value for money, and can help muddier pedals really sing once you punch it in.
I have one and opened it up took the board out turned it over to replace tube to a lower gain AU type and found it has a tube bias pot to control its voltage.
Ah, some folks missed that. Its too compressed for me, did the AU7 help ? Do you have any idea what voltage it runs at ? I think the power supply V might be multiplied
A little EQ via my Boss GE-7 to tame a bit of the highs and this thing makes for a very nice overdrive at mid-drive levels, and some really nice crunchiness at higher drive settings. Plugged in front of a Traynor YCV20 tube amp.
Hi from Atlantic City!! I've been waiting for Someone in the UA-cam group to finally recognize the Pilot... I think Your impressions of it will Amplifier if You change out the Tube with a Tung-Sol... Thanks Ryan
I got my tube pilot yesterday. Totally love it! I also ordered a 1980 dod 250 from ebay. I m not sure if you were the same person my wife contacted via Twitter asking you in my behalf about the year of the dod 250 you were playing. Great video !
Nice demo! I own this pedal, but I am pretty sure I have never made it sound this good! I think I need to take it off the shelf and play around with it some more!
I don't have this pedal, but I do have the EHX Hot Tubes which is pretty much the same thing. The Hot Tubes doesn't start to break up until the gain is halfway up so I just set it there and it's just an "always on" kind of pedal. Use these tube pedals to just add a little more character to your cleans and beef up your distorted tones. I use a solid state amp usually at a low volume, and even though it's supposed to emulate a tube response, you still have to turn it up to get that. This type of pedal fixes that issue. It would be nice if this pedal had a tone knob on it though if you don't want that stinging high end tone it creates.
Just got this pedal. I like the warm tones I'm getting out of it. My problem is I didn't know these pedals don't get activated unless you lift your foot off the switch after stomping on them. Same thing with my TC Electronic Vibraclone, which is from the same series. That messes with the timing of your playing. Any workaround for this? I'm used to stepping on a pedal and having it engaged as soon as the switch is pressed down.
I got one of these used, and I must say it is by far my favorite dristorition pedal. I will not even say how much i payed for it, it was a steal... if the market price of this pedal is a steal already, on the second-hand market, OMG. I used to favor a lot the VOX satriani distorion, but low drive setting on this pedal is just gorgeous.
I purchased this pedal a week ago. I placed it in front of the amp in my pedal chain and was VERY disappointed in the sound. Then just before I sent it back, I tried it in the effects loop of my amplifier. OMG. What a difference. I'm running a Tech21 Plexi Flyrig before the Tube Drive as my preamp and bypass my Katana 100 preamp altogether. I run the Flyrig straight into the Tube Pilot and then into the effects return of my amp. The Tech21 allows me to color my sound just like the Katana's preamp would have. I can use my amps preamp and this still sounds much better than placing it in the pedal chain, I just like to Plexi sound I get from the Flyrig vs the Katana. I love the sound I am getting now. I don't use it for overdrive as much as I keep the drive low and it makes the Katana sound like a nice tube amp. I keep the Tube Pilot Drive at 9-11 and volume all the way up. I was looking at the more expensive tube drivers and was willing to spend the money but this sound is perfect for me and all I need. I use it as an always on pedal this way.
I should clarify something about my comment. I am running two amps, one with the Tube Pilot and one with out- which sounds great. Kind of a Wet/Dry rig. But I did notice today if I just listen to the amp with the Type Pilot alone, I would not say it sounds all that great. For some reason when both amps are in play, it sounds great. Go figure. Thought I should add this.
I think it really matters how much voltage you send into the grid of the first triode of the 12AX7. It might it sound great to have two of these stacked. The first one as a "light dirt boost" and the second as your "dirty tone".
I had recently bought a second one. One for lead board and other for keys board. I previously used for rhythm guitar and bass, both to great effect. My preferred setting is lowest drive for the compression and little grit and stack for tone from there. I would say, between all my separate instrument pedalboards (all line in), the Tube Pilot is a huge part of my "bullsh!t artist signature", haha.
Sounds very scooped when you start turning the gain up... I think it could be nice with a mid-boost pedal (TS-type pedal) in the front? Could do with a tone control, but for the money it would be fun to play with!
Sounds really nice indeed, Ryan. I bet that pretty soon there will be all sorts of tone control mods for it. Ah, 2 little things you didn't do (but could do? :)) - using the tone control on the guitar and 2- really want to see how this stacks after other OD's and fuzzes.

@60CycleHumcast Thanks! I thought i might have to send it back. I have had my MegaDistortion for years, but I needed something less aggressive. The TubePilot is just what I needed.
Nice demo! Can’t believe I’m seeing this several years after the fact! I’m actually finally getting around to getting one of these. It always reminded me, aesthetically, of the old B.K. Tube Driver, and I would bet it’s a scaled back version of Behringer’s T911 (which is a clone of the Tube Driver; and I think Behringer now owns TC... or the other way around. Either way, same company now). Surprisingly, I haven’t found a lot of owners to ask about them. But at the price and reviews like this, I’m in.
I was looking at the video - without hearing it from Ryan's expression, I would have thought he hated it....what an expression ! ( Gritty nasty distortion of the face ? ) Enjoy !
Mine doesn't sound NEARLY this bad unless I play from a small practice amp (orange crush). It's my main OD pedal through a blues deville and it sounds amazing. Don't let this demo fool you. Also, this pedal requires minimum 400 mA.
Are those the pickups that came with the mustang? I recently got a surf green one and put these cheap humbuckers sized p90’s in mine without ever really trying to use the humbuckers that it came with. Need to fix the action and intonation though so i haven’t gotten to really properly try them out yet
60 Cycle Hum i think I’m going to be buying this pedal and the one reverb pedal from this line that you showed. I already got the compressor and the booster. They are both great purchases that have really helped me that the soft sound i was looking for. Will probably buy the delay you showed off too to mess with it. You can never have too many pedals
That's a good idea. I built a MODkitsdiy tube driver (is that the name?) a few years ago. I liked it when I finished it, but liked it a lot more when I swapped around tubes. I found one that sounded great for guitar (I think it was a new JJ?) and one that sounded better for bass (old RCA 7025). I was surprised how differently it reacted to the random 12ax7 (etc) stuff I had around. I bet this is a similar circuit, assuming it's using a starved plate circuit and doesn't actually have a transformer inside (I'm guessing by the size).
It sounds like 'static noise' coming out of a T.V set . A valve in an enclosed pedal enclosure, and no ventilation ? ' Hot - stuff - baby this evening '
Honestly, as what’s clearly an attempt at a cheap knock off of the BK Butler Tube driver, doesn’t even come close. Funny thing is, the actual tube driver isn’t even that expensive on the current pedal market.
@@60CycleHumcast using a tube amp, what need do i have to use this pedal, how can i hear the real sound of this tube? make a video where you use a non-tube amp, then press on the pedal and make the difference feel, then yes it is worth, otherwise it's all smoke
the purpose of the pedal isn't to sound like a tube amp, its to sound like a distortion/overdrive that happens to have a tube component. I'd think that in the scenario as you are presenting it (that the pedal is meant to stand in as an amp) then the correct way to demo it would be to plug it straight into a recording interface. But its not meant to be an amp replacement, its meant to do be a distortion/OD like i mentioned.
I've always loved 'unconventional' distortion sounds...never would have thought the Tube Pilot would end up on my GAS list. Great demo too, you sold me on it.

It's fuzzy... But in a good, random, tubey kinda way. Sounds kinda like a small Fender amp being boosted to heck and back. I dig. Good demo!

Sounds like it would rock for drop D stoner rock riffs or into a crunchy amp with both knobs cranked for DOOM
its very doomy.
it would.
Thanks man, I have been waiting for this.
I put a 12AU7 in my behringer tube pedal. Sounds great, I wonder how this would sound.

its hard to know
I'm trying to cheat and get a tube sound without the expense of a new amp. This ain't it but it sounds so good I'm going to get one anyway!
I'm starting a proto-punk band that will invent punk before 2030
It needs to go thru the fx loop
Themixmusicandmore nope, not for surf reverb
@@60CycleHumcast im not talking about the reverb
Good demo, but sounds too fuzzy & the right word you used 'Speaker tearing' sound. Good price though & may be good to experiment with tube swapping.
Too fuzzy? Nah...if you want polite sound, why not just get a Tube Screamer?
Yup I have my eyes on the Nutube Tube screamer just released.Bit pricey though!
Fuck the haters bro, Its great what you're doing! :)
sounds sweet! You are mature.
I don't think I'm mature. My beard is my hair.
@@blueshorecreative3146 I have no idea what is happening right now.
@@60CycleHumcast sorry, was trying to make joke
This guys vibrato LOL
At 59.00 bucks, wow!!😊
Sounds like they took a tube and figured out a way to make it sound as useless as a transistor.
It sounds like 'static noise' coming out of a T.V set . A valve in an enclosed pedal enclosure, and no ventilation ? ' Hot - stuff - baby this evening '
This! This is what I need!
Honestly, as what’s clearly an attempt at a cheap knock off of the BK Butler Tube driver, doesn’t even come close. Funny thing is, the actual tube driver isn’t even that expensive on the current pedal market.
VOX already did this better with their "Nu-Tube" line, which includes the Mystic Edge.
I love TC but this pedal is kind of a stretch
Great for those nights when you really hate your audience...
Cheaper than a MIKU.
I'll stick with my Marshall Bluesbreaker II pedal thanks
Great vid, but man, I couldn't hate this sound more. LOL! Just poke some holes in your speaker if you want this hissy spitty awful sound.
i sliced up a speaker once, it didn't sound as good as this pedal does, lol.
this pedal is cheaper than a speaker.
But which amp, are you using? if you use amp tube, the demo is a fake !!!!
what?
@@60CycleHumcast
using a tube amp, what need do i have to use this pedal, how can i hear the real sound of this tube? make a video where you use a non-tube amp, then press on the pedal and make the difference feel, then yes it is worth, otherwise it's all smoke
the purpose of the pedal isn't to sound like a tube amp, its to sound like a distortion/overdrive that happens to have a tube component. I'd think that in the scenario as you are presenting it (that the pedal is meant to stand in as an amp) then the correct way to demo it would be to plug it straight into a recording interface. But its not meant to be an amp replacement, its meant to do be a distortion/OD like i mentioned.
Not the way your demonstrating.
Too much talk
Sounds terrible...
Great fuzz.
Shit-lord.
Some people just need validation of their insignificant life.
most people do.
sounds bad... "tube" dont mean automatically "good". Any yellow boss sounds better
Ryan, an opinion, this pedal is not good. That is all, I cannot even stand it long enough to dis it.
Sorry, that’s the worst sound I’ve ever heard...
