      I just bought a 2019 SE. I have no regrets after shopping the competition. And as far as the faux exhaust outlets; I don’t have any issues with that. I much prefer the front center armrest be adjustable in some way as opposed to being fixed. I found cost-cutting in the Rav-4 & CR-V as well as Tucson. Thank you for the review Sam.

      My start-stop doesn’t cause my Tiguan to shutter at all and there are no odors from the air conditioner, and i don’t have jerky shifts. My engine is smooth & refined and doesn’t sound like a blender full of rocks. I’d be trading it in quickly if it had all these issues. This is my 3rd VW in 8 years and I haven’t had any problems. I hope I don’t have any of these issues. The Rav-4 I drove and the HR-V crashed over bumps like he said this Tiguan has. Dear God I would not have gone to the VW dealer again had I watched this review first. Other auto reviewers have reported positive things in all qualities/ areas except gas mileage. This Tiguan is built on the new MQB Platform. This S must have been a pile of junk. To me rental grade would be the Ford Escape. Maybe some of the magic is gone but at least VW has avoided the CVT. I think there is value here and I feel like I’ve purchased a vehicle that is much more expensive than what I paid. Sam didn’t mention the new people first warranty either which is now 6 years / 72k miles, the best in the industry. And this turbo doesn’t require premium fuel. This review slanted to the negative. I would have liked specifics on what other compact SUV’s Sam would recommend over this? Mazda CX-5 maybe? Well I drove it on 3 occasions and the driving dynamics were good but it wasn’t perfect. My SE has lots of little niceties like 1-touch up/down for all windows, a CD player in the glove box, extending sun visors, dual 2nd seat map pockets, wheel locks, monster mats and VW cargo mgmt package & First aid kit. The emergency 3rd row has already been a savior for my family a couple times when neighbor children wanted to go with my kids for ice cream. Thanks for the review.

    You can’t jump into a budget Tiguan and have GTI expectations.. that vehicle sells for $22k after discounts and comes with a 6 year warranty. It also looks good, has all the space you need and has standard app connect. Go to a SEL Premium 4motion with active control and you’ll be fine. Most buyers want practicality and that’s where the Tiguan S shines.

      Have you spent a week driving one? We should be able to have last generation Tiguan expectations, which were far from met. The old Tiguan remains the shining bargain.

      I’m shopping for a new suv and test drove a 2018 Tiguan just today and use to have a Highlander on of the best according to Consumer Reports. I totally disagree on more then several points you made about this suv. You didn’t even mention the 221 lbs of torque this engine produces which makes up for the 184 horsepower. Further more I was impressed with the smoothness and it definitely didn’t have any rattles or vibrating parts. You forgot to mention that there is an off button for the auto shutdown of the engine. If you drive in lite traffic auto shut off is unnecessary. Let me be clear I’m not loyal to VW and don’t like their low sale value, but I was impressed with the cost of the Tiguan and what you get as compared to a Toyota RAV4 and I am loyal to Toyota over the years. What I want to know is how well the 4motion works. Joe

      I know this video is a bit older, but I have to agree with the TestDriven review and disagree with your comment VWdeni. I just recently drove both a used 2016 Tiguan S and a 2018 Tiguan S, SE and SEL. I was disappointed in the new Tiguan. The 2016 had that VW magic as Sam mentioned and felt well put together and an absolute joy to drive. The new Tiguan, regardless of model, felt cheap and lifeless. I have been driving numerous small SUV's lately as I am in the market, and the older Tiguan's standout in many areas. The new ones really fall flat, especially based on the VW pedigree.

      Depends on your priorities in life... and your wallet. I’m looking at one to replace my 2010 Mazdaspeed3 as we now have a little girl and this checks all the right boxes for a family ride. If you’re expecting race car out of family vehicles, then you need to check your expectations at the door, or spend a lot more money. The Tiguan drives surprising well and can baby all day. The only real downfall being the power plant.

    As a veteran VW owner myself, Im a bit let down by your review Sam. My sister had a previous gen Tiguan with the AWD and it was essentially a Golf on Stilts. Still fun to drive, still a true quality VW (with the price to match). In this case you are starting to seeing a cheapening of the brand. The worst part is the lack of steering and driving dynamics...VW is just "another" brand now..sad. Thank you for your continued quality videos.

    Sam, We test drove this 2018 Tiguan, but steered away from it after watching your video and purchased a 2018 Subaru Outback. This is where your videos are public services, as the chassis imperfections and other hickies all point toward a vehicle that will feel tired after 10 yrs' ownership. We keep our cars about 15 years, so this is important to us.I liked the ride of the Tiguan; my wife did not. Ultimately we chose an Outback. Fortunately for us in Long Beach, there's a dealer that carries both brands and made the buying experience enjoyable. Very happy so far with the Outback.We are very grateful for your advice.Now, if I can just talk her into moving back to Arizona . . .

    bought one myself in Sep, great suv for me, sadly had to traded my GTI in for a bigger SUV , well its a VW we all know its weakness , my family like the solid built the room, the quality finish of the car, and I can able even to get a better MPG than VW claims,can never able to get even close with my old highlander ,CRV, IS300, its a great review tho , I had same feeling with the car for the first 1K, but after than the tran and engine gets lot of better, I`m not sure if the car can really learn or I`m kind of getting used to it, still think its a better SUV than the CRV and RAV4

    Pretty much agreed with everything you mentioned. It's no longer made to target drivers who care about the driving experience. It's made to offer as much value and hopefully, vw will price it that way. It's no longer premium.

    You're bang on with your reporting, especially in regards to the powertrain. I drove two of these ( requested a second one due to believing the first one was defective) and they both felt jerky ( especially the upshifts from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd) , there was excessive vibration in the cabin at idle while the engine was cold and the power is not there. The only redeeming qualities are the tech options, especially the virtual cockpit.

    Very disappointing. Especially considering this Tiguan’s predecessor, while long in the tooth, was a sporty, fun to drive enthusiast car. VW seems to be shedding their “fun” image and now chase Toyota’s shadow building boring bland boxes. Soulless cars for soulless shoppers. Sad.

    Thanks for the honest review Sam. I've test driven the Tiguan 2018 3 times and the Mazda cx5 3 times. It's been a tough decision. Your review cinched it for me. I love the spaciousness of the Tiguan and the panoramic roof. You forgot to mention that the Tiguan comes with a CD player, which I love too. It's old school, but I never play CDs at home and look forward to playing them in my car. Mazda's don't have CD players and they don't have Apple Play. I feel like I'm in a tight cockpit in the Mazda. Some like this, but I prefer the spaciousness of the VW. The clunky chassis, turbo lag, loud engine and illusory exhaust pipes of the Tiguan are problems for me. I like authentic, so the faux pipes feel like a lie. I should say though, that the Tiguan SE, SEL, and SEL Premium feel more upscale and refined than the S.

    Thanks for the real review. No BS. The issues are from VW cost cutting. I chuckle that VW went to cloth because the fake leather-vinyl was too expensive. Vinyl is the cheapest material out there. I suspect less power equals more longevity thus the long warranty. 5 star review!

    First review I have heard that says the suspension sucks.....and it does.
    I am a big VW fan and passat owner for last 18years. I spent 10 hours test driving the Tiguan S 4MOTION. I really wanted to like it, a $22.5K AWD SUV with a turbo and a 6 year warranty, wow. I found the front seats poor, and the ride very rough. It seems they made the suspension very stiff to improve the handling and every bump in the road gets transferred into the cabin and right into your spine. If you put the car in sport mode it helps the shifting and the steering (is that a 4MOTION only option?). I found the engine transmission shifting and steering to be passable when in sport mode, but the lack of suspension compliance and seat comfort was the deal breaker for me. It seems that VW expects that you will only be driving on smooth pavement. My 2015 passat does better on dirt roads than the 2018 Tiguan 4Motion, Sad...

    • @larstomasson9244
      @larstomasson9244 6 років тому

      I BOUGHT IT

    • @larstomasson9244
      @larstomasson9244 6 років тому

      I bought a base 4MOTION. I improved the ride substantially by reducing the tire pressure from 41psi to 36psi. I bought it because I I thought it was the best value for a AWD for $22.5K, and I didn't like the ride of the Forester. 4MOTION gives you a sport mode that improves the steering and shifting. The power exceeds the Forester and outback and CR-V base engines, at 6K ft altitude, I find it OK. I agree that the suspension tuning is not the best. The tires at 215 cross section are small compared to the competition and pumped up to 41psi makes the car ride like shit. I plan to replace the tires with 235 cross section and run them at ~34psi which I think will resolve the ride problem based on my testing of the stock tires at 36psi. I will post and let everyone know how it works out.
      I will add that the hard plastic flat bottom steering wheel is ridiculous, Base Passat wheel is way better. Will probably need to add a wrap to the wheel, of change it out for a Passat wheel if possible.

    I own a last version Tiguan, in this video, you said that the new Tiguan only requires regular gas, but last version requires premium gas, my experience is, the engine and gear will perform weird when using regular gas, when you have time, try an experiment using 91 gas

    • @TestDrivenTV

      The old Tiguan requires premium because it is a different engine and tune than what is in the new Tiguan. The new Tiguan has a detuned "Budack Cycle" engine which is engineered to run on regular unleaded.

I was very interested when VW came out with the 2018 Tiguan, but after drving in it once myself (SEL Premium 4Motion)I came away very dismayed at the product. This is a karma product. Meaning, when a company sits in the boardroom and purposely schemes to deceive its customers (see diesel-gate) the consequence is producing a sub-standard product that will by no means attract new buyers let alone all the ones they lost.

    • @TestDrivenTV
      @TestDrivenTV  6 років тому +1

      This is a good assessment as this is a product developed at post TDI VW. Cost cutting had to occur and so has the reset of product priorities as a result of the debacle. Unfortunately the compromises chosen here are exactly the opposite of what should have been to gain people back to the brand.

    DON'T BUY A TIGUAN AS IT HAS MANY ISSUES AND DEFECTS THAT VOLKSWAGEN CANNOT FIX!!
    Welcome to my hell. I leased a 2018 VW Tiguan last July and have been battling with Volkswagen since I got it with the same pillar noise (both sides), engine stalling, and the horrible jerking of the vehicle after releasing the gas pedal. There is a factory defect with Tiguans where the pillar was not properly welded together at the plant so when the vehicle's body stresses it clicks. I have taken my Tiguan to get this and the other defects taken care of and Volkswagen has no solution. I have discovered that the local service personnel are just as frustrated as they are stuck waiting on Volkswagen engineers to come up with a solution. I opened a case with VW of America to buy back my Tiguan and after months of back and forth nonsense, VW of America basically said that is the way the Tiguan functions so too bad. Once again Volkswagen has cheated their customers by ignoring a defect and not fessing up to it. So either we all get together and complain to Volkswagen, better business bureau or suffer. This is my 7th Volkswagen and my last. Good luck to all who are suffering with the Tiguans' defects.

    “It feels rental car grade,” well, at the S trim level, it essentially is. I’m guessing many VW deal lots won’t have many S trim levels in the first place. Most people will end up with the SE at least. I’m curious if VW really decontented the S trim level since it’s the base. It sounds like Sam is mourning the loss of Volkswagen. Sad. As great as the previous Tiguan was, not a lot of people wanted it. They wanted a boring RAV-4. So the new Tiguan is trying to be a boring RAV-4.

    • @TestDrivenTV
      @TestDrivenTV  6 років тому +1

      The trim grade doesn't change the box of rocks engine with less horsepower, the rough transmission, the austere interior design and materials, the noisy and loose chassis, the hollow sounding door slams or the lack of anything that sets it above average.

    the tail pipe illusion will not fool anyone when the cold wx sets in; but who cares as its just a styling cue and at least in a rear end collision, the exhaust will be spared...maybe...sounds like they (VW) engineered themselves out of a sales success; little attention to detail, driving experience, feel and overall passion...and then they'll wonder why sales tanked...word of a mediocre product spreads and people start putting it 3rd, 4th, 5th on their list. Other than the 3rd row, I bet the KIA Soul (all engines) beats the Tiguan at daily duties and driving dynamics/engagement...also, the Tiguan's paltry, pseudo off road performance should not be its saving grace as there are plenty of other similarly capable cars that just do other things better. Hopefully that engine start/stop A/C musty smell hits home on test drives so VW gets rid of the start/stop feature (can it be turned off, coded out???)

      Because that makes sense -to hate on cars dishonestly just to gain credibility. Doesn't seem like a good strategy to keep cars coming our way from automakers. Or maybe this vehicle just sucks and that's the truth we are willing to tell and risk the car company not wanting to give us vehicles anymore. Truth is worth far more risk than lies.
