    There was article from Bloomberg not too long ago rumoring that Android auto is coming, but had few details. I did a test drive today at my dealer and asked them if they had more details. They confirmed that it is coming, and all vehicles with entune 3.0 will be able to get update for it. The salesman said they just recently went through a training for it. Didn't have a date, but said it will be this year

    But still not Android Auto and unfortunately those with old Toyota's are stuck with the outated Entunes 2.0 that won't get updated. Could we get the new Entunes 3.0 head unit in the older Toyota's model?

    Thanks for this overview Alex. As many others have said, the lack of Android Auto makes it a non-starter for me. Also, do we really need another app ecosystem in addition to Apple + Google? Now developers have to include Entune support in their app in addition to CarPlay/AA and have it listed on a Toyota App Catalog? That catalog will be niche at best compared to apps that support CarPlay and AA - I think Toyota is making a strategic mistake trying to go their own way with built-in apps.

    • @PeterRevie

      It's not a bad option, but often you don't get all the integration with the rest of the car and the look isn't quite the same. Still, those aftermarket units are getting better.

    If my understanding is correct Apple CarPlay is generated by the phone itself, it just requires coding to allow the usb to allow video transfer, where as the android auto is software that has to be added to the head unit itself instead of video through like Apple CarPlay

    Hi Alex! Thanks for the review. Is it just those 2019 models getting the new Entune 3.0 system or do you think all 2019 models will get it? I’m considering a Highlander Hybrid or RAV4 Hybrid (in addition to a couple of other non-Toyota models) but Apple CarPlay would be nice to have. Also, is Toyota’s Nav still stubborn? In the past, it would try to route me somewhere I knew would not be the best route but it would keep pushing me to go its preferred route long after it was the fastest route by its own estimation (hence the stubbornness).

    Woo Hoo! Apple CarPlay is up and running on our 2019 Camry SE! I plugged my wife's brand new iPhone 8 Plus (her Galaxy 5 just died) into the Camry but had two small glitches, hardly worth mentioning - Siri must be enabled on the iPhone and CarPlay must be enabled on the Camry. Neither were enabled but at least the Camry's interface told me Siri was not enabled after I turned on CarPlay as Jeff instructed in this video. Once both were enabled I got the proper menu on screen. The voice recognition button on the steering wheel worked and Siri called my phone through the Camry/wife's iPhone connection. Also I sent a text to my phone using the same voice recognition method. Sure enough, my phone got the text. Then I said 'where is Best Buy' and two Best Buys within 15 miles were displayed on screen. I chose one and Apple maps came up with directions. I played around with Apple maps and it's nice. I'll have to get Google maps added to CarPlay, it is on the iPhone but doesn't show up on the Camry screen yet.
    I asked what is the weather forecast and got it. I asked for music and got something by U2 - from iTunes I guess. No doubt if I were more comfortable with Apple I could have done much more but this was a great start. I've never used Siri before but it didn't have much trouble understanding my voice without any training as suggested on screen. I need to make more headway on the brand new iPhone before it comes across to the Camry screen.
    Thanks Jeff! This was fun! Now can I convince my wife (Miss I HATE Technology) that it's useful!

    Easier to add a motion sensor with photocell for your driveway lights than it is to set up "smart lights" that you have to give voice commands to turn on and off when you get home.
    My driveway lights turn on automatically when I get home at night and then turn off automatically a few minutes later and it doesn't require talking to Alexa or any internet connection to make it work.

    Toyota needs to offer an over the air update to add Android Auto, or at least the ability to use Google Maps, to all Toyota owners with Entune. Using Scout is like going back to the days of Windows 98. It's a good decade behind Google Maps. If Toyota doesn't catch up with the competition regarding Android Auto, my next car will likely be a Honda.

    Pretty big deal for me personally about Android Auto being absent. Any 2018+ car that doesn't support it is off my shopping list. I'm buying a luxury sports coupe in the ~$70k range sometime after August, and so far there's nary a Lexus, Infiniti or BMW my list, despite all three brands having otherwise quite compelling models in my price range (especially the RC, and to a lesser extent the M2).
    Arbitrary decision? Heck yeah, but aren't most car buying decisions? And hey, it's my hard-earned money, and a price segment that's taken me nearly a decade of savings to be able to afford.
    On higher end cars, infotainment is so integrated into the vehicle's functionality , it's no longer just a matter of swapping in an aftermarket head unit to add missing (or new) features, at least not easily, especially on systems that have a "tablet-style" display that can't easily be retired.

      No, I don't really care either, but IMO if they don't offer it they absolutely need to make Scout GPS standard at a bare minimum and should work on something with better alerts like a Waze or TomTom app. That way your phone is only for streaming and navigation will be on the car screen instead of forcing people to juggle both on the phone. The base Entune is really unacceptable compared to the competition in this respect.

      TheTemplarnight nah BMW didn't like android auto too, but as he said android has a larger share of the market worldwide, especially in Europe, bar the UK. But android and iOS have 99%+ of the market

      Idk I just don't care for it, I've driven cars with it before and yeah it's alright but it doesn't do anything a phone holder and bluetooth can't do, so It's not really a selling point to me.

      CarPlay will remain trash until it allows navigation apps besides Apple Maps.

    So sick of Toyota and their coy little games with android auto. Dear Mr. Toyoda, nobody's freaking interested in Entune. Screw it. I'm buying a Niro.

    Many potential Toyota customers don't like Apple and won't buy Apple products. Toyota will lose their business.

      Toyota has failed to support Android Auto ("AA") for forever so many hundreds of thousands (millions?) of Android users have been buying and driving Toyotas without AA. Doubtful they will lose those customers if they have not already lost them.

      alliejr - Just read the many comments below where people are refusing to buy Toyota cars because they don't have Android Auto. The mobile industry effectively has two competitors. To favour Apple over Google's Android is shameful and unforgivable! Come on Toyota, get your act together! STOP discriminating against Android!

    • @alliejr
      @alliejr 6 років тому

      +tanzanable I doubt you were in the room when the corporate and engineering decisions were made to offer ACP in some new Toyotas, therefore your assertion that Toyota is favouring Apple over Google Android and discriminating against Android is not founded in any actual fact. Toyota is the largest car company in the world. They are not perfect but neither are the idiots. I have no direct knowledge, but I strongly suspect they have valid engineering reasons for offering ACP now, even if they can't yet offer AA. I seriously doubt those reasons have anything to do with a silly religious war regarding Apple vs. Google Android.

    • @tanzanable
      @tanzanable 6 років тому

      alliejr - All of Toyota's competitors who offer ACP also offer AA. Toyota CHOSE not to offer AA! There are no excuses for them! The facts are the facts. They deserve all the criticism they are getting for discriminating against AA!

      tanzanable just for the infotainment? I don’t get why Apple CarPlay and android Auto is a deal breaker like really a car purpose is to get you from point a to b not playing on your phone. Personally I don’t use or have Apple CarPlay and Android Auto but it such a silly thing to do to buy a car based on infotainment system.

  • @aarons7267

    I don’t know why Apple CarPlay and android Auto is such a big deal. It just a silly to buy car for it infotainment system. Almost half of the comments complain how it doesn’t have Android Auto.

      My wife began using Apple Car play when it became available on her new 2016 Hyundai Sonata. The ability to send and receive text messages and phone calls without using your hands to hold the phone, make Car Play safer to use (and legal, here in CA.) After Hyundai bought it back (lemon), her replacement HAD to have Apple Car Play--again, it was easiest for her to use. My wife just got a promotion which includes a work car. Luckily, the 2019 Camry includes Apple Car Play, making her transition to it (from our Accord) easier.
