I lived in Western Washington and had SAD (seasonal affect disorder which means depression from no sunlight) until I moved to Southern California when I was almost 60 years old. I’ve been here since 2009 and haven’t been happier. Sun matters.

Great video and perfect timing! I couldn't resist a cranberry colored wool boucle that was just on sale at Fabricmart. I'm thinking the FibreMood Carmen. (I've never made a coat before, so cross your fingers on my behalf!) I'll be sure to watch your individual coat videos. I love the idea of quilting lining fabric to Thinsulate. (I live in Maine.)

I desperately need a better coat and I love the idea of your quilted liberty lining. How fun! I’m tricky to fit and so fit is my biggest concern keeping me from doing a coat. I just need to sew for myself more so I can figure out those issues and then get brave to do a coat!

Thanks for sharing your favorite coats! I really like the Yates and Kelly, but haven't made the Yates yet. You're right about working on coats in the off-season! My basic black all-purpose coat has needed re-lined (again!) for a few winters now, but in the winter I don't want to be without it very long. 😜 I've got a couple of really colorful wool blends that are intended for coats, but I never think of them in the summer. Maybe this is the year 💪🤞 Hope you're having a good winter 😉😉

I lOVE coats and have a lot (I’m a leaf falling off the tree, feel cold sort of person!) I have lost a great deal of weight so most of my coats hang off me these days and whilst it is summer here in in Australia, I find that my mind is wandering to thoughts of a coat and wondering if there are any easier coat patterns out there in the sewing world. Thanks for a great vlog Whitney, I am always inspired and grateful for your ideas and the skill and passion you bring to this channel and share with us. PS: I finished the Burda maxi dress inspired by your stunning Italian linen! I feel so happy when I wear it. I popped a photo on IG and tagged you in to say a heartfelt thanks 🧡 Go well and see you next vlog

Hi there. Thanks for video. I presently have in mind to sew a couple coats, a shorter one and a longer one. I also am a “seasonal” sewer. I tend to sew what I want to wear at the time but is missing from my wardrobe! I have a couple “vintage” Ellen Tracy-designed coat patterns that I would like to sew. They don’t have linings, which I just must have, so I need to create the lining patterns. Also, I am trudging through the process of whether to interline or not. If so, what to use, etc. I made a long coat two years ago with a raglan sleeve pattern by Merchant and Mills, and not knowing better, I interfaced the entire coat with a fleece. It is a tank! I wouldn’t do that again, but it sure worked well to keep me warm this past week when temps were in single digits with wind chill less than that. We learn… Thanks again.

No the weather isn't grey here at all! Hot hot hot is the forecast at the moment. I have the Kelly anorak and am planning to make this for our Autumn as I am expecting it to be rather wet considering our summer thus far has been extremely dry. I'm sewing swimsuits at the moment though - I'm using the Black Beauty bra pattern which is my well fitting bra pattern to make two sims tops, one I think I will make longer line as I saw on a blog post a really cool three closure back and it's stunning. I'm planning to use the Ipswich bottoms to go with it. Started cutting the tops out today at the local craft group and hopefully can work on them again tonight when it is a bit cooler. I really want to make a blazer this year aswell as a winter coat but our winters are very mild - no snow but it does get cold enough for layers.

@@TomKatStitchery I've not been so excited or pumped about a project for a long time. It helps to have a stash of fabrics which work well - Boodesigns Australia is my go-to. I've made swimsuits for my 9 year old before but never from so it'll be fun! I'm full of inspiration and have binge watched UA-cam and Craftsy for tips and tricks where the elastic is concerned. IF I have enough foam left I might try making the Ipswich top but I really think they need to do an update to this pattern for the cup sizing because it doesn't accommodate for much and I'm hesitant to use any foam just in case it doesn't fit - might try making it as a bra with duplex to get the fit right first I think.

Your coats are beautiful. I love the cream coat. Regarding your Seasonal Affective Disorder; do you have a SAD lamp? We are Texans so when my youngest joined the graduated high school early, joined the Marine Corps at 17, & was stationed at Bremerton, Washington the first phone call was that the weather was so gloomy. We got him a SAD lamp. He felt it was very effective. I think he had to sit under it for 30 minutes a day. Hope you have a wonderful winter and SAD stays for away.

Love your coats! Just about to begin making two coats. The Love Notions pattern was on my radar because of the cup sizes, however, I've settled on a pattern that I already have that has cup sizes as well. It's Butterick 6385. The other coat will be a classic Chesterfield type coat. I'm not sure about the pattern I'll use as yet. Either an OOP Vogue 2449, or an OOP Burda, 8275. The coat is for my daughter, the Burda is a mens' coat but I'll alter it if that's the one I choose. First is doing muslins of both patterns and deciding which looks best.

What a beautiful set of coats you have! I have a Kelly anorak in the works but had puckering in the sleeves so it’s been in the naughty pile for awhile now. I keep looking for the perfect replacement for my carhart jacket… I think the new love notions clef coat may do the trick. When you quilted your Kelly lining, how thick/ heavy was the thinsulate?not sure how they rate it. Stay warm!

Hi Whitney! I found your channel a few months ago. I love it!
What are your thoughts about up cycling jeans to make a coat? I'm thinking about strips of denim, lengthwise down the coat. Perhaps darker denim down the side, lighter down the front and back. I'm also considering having the frayed edge on the outside. (Similar to a rag quilt.) Do you think that would work?
