BMX needs to change the format. It needs to be more down hill or something, maybe a restart hill for a second lap. If the sport is to grow, it needs more passing. First man out the gate wins, is boring.

I totally agree as a long-ago Sting-Ray and BMX rider. And I gave sanctioned BMX racing a go in '79 in Northern California at the 'old age' of 19/20 just for kicks, just to drive my mini-truck to the tracks, unload my bike, line up and compete in the Novice Class, sort of funny in that I'd already won bike races on the road and had owned tricked-out 125 Hondas and even, that year, had free reign on my Dad's BMW R100RS motorcycle, a beauty he had exported from West Germany. Yet, BMX had always fascinated me and although we had moved overseas in late '74 from Pacifica and over there I imported a CYC Stormer, I never got the chance to compete until I returned to California in '79 when there were lots of tracks with weekly races. And talk about a general letdown. The races were just sprints to the first berm, whoever got there first won the little moto and talk about little, one lap and that was it. I was disappointed. And I was a strong rider, just not into sprinting and bashing into others to get my way. And i did show my strength at a downhill track in a park in San Francisco. From the finish I rode back up to the gate for the next moto and I'll never forget the astonished reaction from a fellow competitor, like who would actually ride back up the hill? But that's the way we did it back then, rode for hours up and down hills and streets and whatever was out there to tackle, like the stairs in front of Fairmont Elementary in Pacifica on my Sting-Ray. 😀
