That VT2 is an AGC transistor. The diode AGC voltage controls VT5, which then controls VT2. VT2 sets the bias of VT1 via its emitter, by adjusting the emitter voltage. When VT2 opens, it pulls up the emitter voltage, thereby reducing Vbe. An other interesting part is the closed-loop biasing with VT8 and VT3. They are working together to set up the bias for all the other RF transistors.
This is a very good and reliable receiver produced in the USSR. I had one. My father gave it to me when I turned 10. It was powered by a 9 volt battery and a rechargeable Ni-Cd (Nimh) battery. I put it somewhere years ago and forgot it, and then moved to another apartment. Now there is no LW-MW broadcasting in Russia and these receivers are practically out of business.
A very interesting thing about Shango's videos on radio repair: When I was young, everyone would tell me that people in communist countries could not have shortwave radios, because they didn't want people to listen to non-communist countries. Now I know that most Eastern radios HAD shortwave, whilst most Western World radios did not.
Shortwave was not something the average modern consumer wants on their radio and the band became almost exclusively the domain of the hobbyist. It's popularity dwindling to tiny levels today. The cost of including the extra bands on a consumer set would raise the price and we all know that price is the bottom line. There was certainly some secret communication on Short wave - spies communicating in code Numbers Stations - and Radio Moscow and The Voice Of America battled it out on Short Wave. Anybody with a bit of radio knowledge could listen if they wanted so there was nothing the governments could do to stop casual listening anyhow. I don't agree that MOST eastern radios had Short Wave, I think just like here it fell out of popularity and was found only occasionally on smaller sets.. I love the idea of waiting till night time and the right atmospheric conditions giving rise to extended sky wave propagation and hearing a distant voice or a spy. But we have the WWW now.

Excellent diagnosis. I woulda tried to repair original tuning cap. If you're lucky it would just be tarnish or corrosion between layers - clean and reassemble. Or worst case, polyethelene sheet(s) between plates busted thru. Sandwich bag material is a little too thick, maybe unwind a poly film cap, and cut some new sheets.
