_I've worked in the avionics, or broadcast electronics industries since '76, and hold a post-grad degree in EE. Shango makes me feel like a "newbie". Best troubleshooter in North America, period._

Well much as I love Shango, that is just a silly thing the guy said unless there are no decent electronic engineers left in North America. IF YOU are an electronic engineer you know this. I was bought up with wonderful electronic geniuses who worked in radio and TV from the start of the industry. I live near Crystal Palace the birth of TV. I've been in the business for 40 years plus - he is a wonderfully intuitive engineer and obviously has a lot of experience with radio and TV. BUT. There are lots of us about. Many who could do what Shango does with their eyes shut.
      Very silly statement.
Edit, grammar error did not change substance.

As always, well done, Mr. Shango! I felt the irresistible need to throw a plinko-twerkulate, and a few other harmless ‘explicatives’ in there! Went to a ham fest Saturday, and picked up a function generator and another dip meter for the bench. Maybe one day I’ll get up the gumption to make a repair video?

That VT2 is an AGC transistor. The diode AGC voltage controls VT5, which then controls VT2. VT2 sets the bias of VT1 via its emitter, by adjusting the emitter voltage. When VT2 opens, it pulls up the emitter voltage, thereby reducing Vbe. An other interesting part is the closed-loop biasing with VT8 and VT3. They are working together to set up the bias for all the other RF transistors.

This is a very good and reliable receiver produced in the USSR. I had one. My father gave it to me when I turned 10. It was powered by a 9 volt battery and a rechargeable Ni-Cd (Nimh) battery. I put it somewhere years ago and forgot it, and then moved to another apartment. Now there is no LW-MW broadcasting in Russia and these receivers are practically out of business.

A very interesting thing about Shango's videos on radio repair:
When I was young, everyone would tell me that people in communist countries could not have shortwave radios, because they didn't want people to listen to non-communist countries.
Now I know that most Eastern radios HAD shortwave, whilst most Western World radios did not.

    • @martinda7446
      @martinda7446 3 роки тому

Shortwave was not something the average modern consumer wants on their radio and the band became almost exclusively the domain of the hobbyist. It's popularity dwindling to tiny levels today. The cost of including the extra bands on a consumer set would raise the price and we all know that price is the bottom line. There was certainly some secret communication on Short wave - spies communicating in code Numbers Stations - and Radio Moscow and The Voice Of America battled it out on Short Wave. Anybody with a bit of radio knowledge could listen if they wanted so there was nothing the governments could do to stop casual listening anyhow. I don't agree that MOST eastern radios had Short Wave, I think just like here it fell out of popularity and was found only occasionally on smaller sets..
I love the idea of waiting till night time and the right atmospheric conditions giving rise to extended sky wave propagation and hearing a distant voice or a spy. But we have the WWW now.

Excellent diagnosis. I woulda tried to repair original tuning cap. If you're lucky it would just be tarnish or corrosion between layers - clean and reassemble. Or worst case, polyethelene sheet(s) between plates busted thru. Sandwich bag material is a little too thick, maybe unwind a poly film cap, and cut some new sheets. If too many poly sheets ripped/torn, yeah ,that'd be a drag. I have seen you go to worse extremes to fix a radio. I would not have attempted some of the IF transformer repairs you have done.

I don't remember for sure if it was on this video or if it were on a similar past silent ASMR repair video, but I think you might like to try captioning the silent ASMR videos so that they are as easily to follow along with as your non-ASMR videos are since the non-ASMR videos are much easier to follow along with you when you speak while you show us what components you are adjusting. Also, I wish community captions were still a thing so that members of UA-cam for whom English is not their native language could still caption your videos.

This reminds me of the opening 20 minutes of Stanley Kubrick's "2001 a Space Odyssey". No dialogue, he brilliantly gives credit to the imagination of his audience....Bravo Sir!

Soviet era radio and no commentary, the two seem very connected - almost like a statement. I miss the commentary.

So is it a safe bet that after this video was made, this radio followed the capacitor?

I wouldn't throw it away as there are lots of good Soviet components to repair other iron curtain sets. If you had a really nice example and wanted to keep all the componentry Soviet, there's your parts.

@@randyab9go188 yeah yeah yeah. I know all that. It was more of a comment on how the end result, while working, was not really useful. Don’t be so pedantic!

For a 1988 radio, it looks surprisingly old in and out, maybe they have not been upgrading the design since 1969? I see "modern" orange shard transistors however.
