Restoring A $7,000 Mansion: Laying Rock In The Basement (20+ Tons)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 сер 2024
- My mansion needs a new basement. Today I am attempting to lay rock in the basement, to allow us to pour a new concrete floor, build an internal drainage system, and build a radon mitigation system. I run the Dingo, shovel dirt, pour concrete, calculate a materials list, spread over 20 tons of rock, and learn a lot along the way.

Is there anything that Mr. Roman won’t attack? Good Lord what a worker !
Ukrainian!
The Slavs are hard working in general, especialy Ukrainians. Greetings from Poland!
Gotta love Roman and Justin. Being a General Contractor myself I have to feel that a lot of this basement work has become a lot more than Justin bargained for.
Justin justin hes my man if he cant do it nobody can .roman roman hes our guy hes the apple of everybodys eye cole cole hes our man if he cant find something to do nobody can 😂❤😊
One aspect overlooked. The more engaging UA-cam episodes, the greater the audience draw and revenue earned.
Would it have been easier to pour a modern foundation nearby and then move the house over on top of it?
The whole dang house was! But it sure is dandy content.
That is what I was thing for past few months. Still would cost maybe $40-$50 k just to move the house possibly.@@gibesfamily
As you said Cole, the Dingo is/was worth every penny spent on its rental fee! 👍👏✨
And thank goodness that dingo didn't eat any of his babies !!! 😜
So is her identical twin sister Zoot.
(IYKYK).
Cole, you are so blessed to have Justin & Roman with you as brothers on a mission. God Bless You and everyone working with you.
I agree❤
AMEN
Well he is paying them so they do thier job xD
I hope we can see more of your family reacting to the build. I love seeing how they are reacting to all the changes.
Yep!
I wish we could see him farm again with his family!!!
The good news is that houses built back then had so many air leaks the radon concentrations wouldn’t have been nearly what they would be today in a house built to modern code. Having a mitigation system is the right choice.
This is my favorite series on UA-cam right now. Thanks for documenting it, Cole.
Cole I am proud of you addressing radon. Glad you caught it,
Thanks for the lesson btw . Interesting and a bit scary for
A lot of people that have always lived in a basement.
I’m pretty sure it is code, at least in the Midwest states I’ve lived in.
COLE THANK YOU FOR EDUCATING US ALL AS YOU GO ALONG.
When I see your thumbnail, this grandma smiles. ❤️
You are one lucky man Cole to have two good friends help you out with this kind of work, you are all doing a great job, Good Work
Cole, Justin and Roman love watching you guys working on a 7000.00 house remodel! Can't wait to see it when you're done with it! ❤
Quiet a daunting project.
Paying the price for peace of mind and expanding your skill set is priceless.
Hello from Scotland, Been watching you for years, so happy to watch your life develop. Married, and now with 2 boys. I am glued to watching the development with the house renovation. Roman is a rather tasty distraction for us older ladies.☺I can't wait to see what the interior and decor looks like.
Hi! I’m watching from Scotland too! I agree with your assessment of Roman lol.
Roman makes your videos SO MUCH more watchable!! Great addition to your crew.
Thank you for explaining Radon and the importance of mitigating your home so well. My mother passed away from lung cancer caused by Radon gas. My entire family was exposed to Radon in their home for years and we had no idea that we had a problem. We bought meters and passed them around to our neighbors and friends. Some people chose to have their homes mitigated. Some people didn’t even want to test their homes . It certainly isn’t a fun way to die. It isn’t expensive to correct even in an older home.
Cole, don’t forget the sewerage connection you might need for the home theatre extension - build it in now. 😁👌❤️❤️❤️😊
Canada says hello. I came for an education on American corn and beans and am really enjoying your "build" series. I have a feeling I'd follow whatever adventure your life takes us on.
Man Cole where would you be without Batman & Roman? Did anyone have a clue to this amount of work? Thats crazy dedication . Great job guys.
Glad to see Roman finally has been getting some Cornstar Farms merch!!
I could not find any Roman merchandise. Where did you see this??? Thank You in advance.
@@beverlyb5144it’s not Roman’s mech it’s Cole’s that he sells
I’m so impressed with you guys!! Your determination, backbreaking labor and work ethic is something you don’t see often. Give yourselves a huge pat on the soar backs 👏👏👏👏👏
I'm loving this construction work. Farming is great to watch, but this is even better.
I hope you’re going to put down a good vapor barrier before you pour the concrete. It should also be taped and sealed well!
I can’t wait till we’re outta the basement
All of it is coming together! That door shutting was your ancestors visiting to see how everything is coming along. You and your team are doing an awesome job!
So glad to see you addressing radon! So many people don't know about it. If you have a sump pump chances of exposure is much higher. Very good plan on removing it from your house. We did the same thing. When we tested our house the lab actually called us and told us not to be staying in the house until it is fixed.
I'm anxious for the completion, but at the same time, will miss these videos. I originally came here for the farming videos, but really enjoying the reno vids.
Once again great job guys! Hope that Justin is feeling better.
Three notes of interest for you Cole.
1. Your drainpipe should be a perforated pipe covered with a filtering cloth before you bury it in rock.
2. Your radon pipe also needs to be perforated, covered with a filter cloth, and higher than your perimeter pipe so it doesn't accidently draw water into it.
3. You should also put a cloth over top of the entire floor of rock before you pour the floor so your concrete doesn't seep into the rock.
You are doing a great service to the house and all the work that You Justin and Roman are doing will be there for your children's, children's, children to enjoy.
very odd points of interest id say.
What makes you think he isnt gonna use perforated pipes? He has to use perf pipe or nothing will even get into them.
Cloth over rock so concrete doesnt seep into it? LOL Really? Ive poured many basements and ive never seen any seepage that occured
@warrenmichael918 In his preview, he had non perforated pipe laying in one of his perimeter trenches, hence that comment.
How many floors have you dug up once poured to see if the concrete has seeped into the stone? Every basement floor that I have ever worked if it had stone, we put a barrier over the stone. If it was sand, we poured directly on the sand.
the white pipe he had laying on the floor was just an example. He also said he was going to buy "rolls" of drain pipe. that white pipe doesnt come in "rolls" ; drain pipe does. thus I think you can be assured he will buy the correct pipe.
@larryfreeman7979 I'm sure he will. He may have a building expert on hand guiding his moves for all we know. That still shouldn't stop people from making observations and suggestions. I only made suggestions based on what I saw and things I know from my home construction days. It would be different if I was at his house seeing everything in person.
@@mark15vintage9 ive poured basements and have also torn down a few houses with basements and ive never seen this concrete seepage youre worried about. Ive torn out thousands of feet of sidewalks and driveways that were poured directly on gravel and i still havent ever witnessed this seepage youre trying to say exists. Im not saying he will not or shouldnt llay a vapor barrier down but it isnt to stop any seepage into the tamped gravel. I did notice he was using non perf pipe but later in the video he specifically said he was buying perf tile from a neighbor or friend, so i knew he wasnt using solid pipe.
You are going to be so glad when the basement is finished and go to the main living part of the house. You and Justine and Roman make a good team and are thinking of every aspect of the house. I hope other contractors think about radon gas and the danger it poses. I wouldn’t miss one episode of this build because of your contagious enthusiasm. God bless you and Nave and the babies.
Great explanation on the Radon mitigation.
You are all wonderful role models for your sons! You're showing them what can be accomplished with hard work, cooperation and a good attitude. Cole has a knack for teaching and a great way of explaining things or the reasons for each step of the process. I love watching everything happen! God bless you all!!
I can see why you have to think so far ahead. Good job guys.
Working so hard!
I love when you go into “town” I loved going into your town with my farmer grandpa lots and lots of years ago.
Very nice progress and definitely agree on the Dingo being worth every cent of the rental fee.
Coming from an IT guy. When you get ready to start wiring, please heavily consider running network cable (minimum CAT6) through the house. Even if you don't use it now, it will be so much better when you want to connect things in your house (tv, cameras, etc). Food for thought if it hasn't already been chewed.
Roman you the man!!!
Things are going to be so exciting when you guys start putting in the walls. 😊
Great job Roman. You are such a hard worker. Sorry Justin was not feeling well and you had to dig along.
Hope Juston feels better. Roman you just keep digging your little heart out. Cole I hope you didn't have to use the shovel and did something cool with it.😊 All three, be blessed.
Enjoying the series Gentlemen, motivating me to take on some of my own projects on the house - one is perhaps building a 10*10 cabin in the back woods!
Such hard work. I bet everyone is looking forward to the basement being poured and complete. Wonderful work! Take care and be safe. Hope Juston feels better.
You guys sure got your money's worth out of that Dingo rental. What a great little machine.
I love this team. So interesting to watch and they work so well together. I'm learning a lot about basements.
Im sure Nave will be happy the mouse door is closing.
I think Cole was more concerned! LOL The sissy......haha im kidding, i think!
It’s always nice to have a additional entrance from the outside into the basement
Excellent work gentlemen!
Roman is a work force. Go boys🎉
Spreading that rock looked pretty satisfying. It's a major upgrade to the house.
Not really.
All the labor you guys have put in is amazing. I think it might have been easier and cheaper to lift the house, demo the old foundation and pour a new one with all the drainage and radon ventilation already done.
I hope you beans and corn are enjoying all that rain!
Radon remediation is the best safety present you can give your family!! Illinois has a real problem with radon.
I don't think you understand how happy I am to see a video today!! Thanks for cheering me up! :)
Cole, I must congratulate you on your great team of Justin & Roman! All of you are such hard workers, not to mention, great friends! Every video you put up is so interesting & informative! Pat yourselves on the back for a job well done! TYTY for sharing! ❤️❤️🙏❤️❤️
Team Corn Star! 100%
I look forward to your reno videos and watch for them every day. I get so excited when I see you post one. My husband and I watch them together, I’m 63 and he’s 71 and he always comes in and asks me if that pornstar kid has put one of those house videos on 😂😂 He cracks me up!
those drain are what we call the Big O and we put the big O on the outside of the foundation
Hey Cole can you make a short of your radon explanation please. It was really good and would like to share that with the next generations
The best part was Roman taking Dingo home to his family. Snort Laughter.
Radon awareness is important and a very good thing to know. Most people don't realize that the risk is as bad as smoking. Or that if you already smoke, your lung cancer risk more than doubles. Since you do live in a very high risk location, I'd encourage you to also set up radon detectors to validate the remediation system is performing as planned, and to catch any unanticipated breakdown, blockage, or underperformance. Systems don't work perfectly forever (if they even work as planned).
Wow! Y’all make me tired just watching how hard you work! But it’s totally fascinating and I really love how much y’all love to work, and want to do a quality job, not a hurry up just to get it done job. This is one of those channels that I love to watch every day. Your “can do” attitude and cheerful spirit set this channel apart from others. Plus Cole, you always look so happy to get started at the beginning of each video. You have found the joy in doing hard work each day to provide for your family. With all of the problems in the world today, your channel is an oasis where we can come and have our souls refreshed. God bless you boys. You may think your little UA-cam channel was just a way to document what you are doing to fix up your farm, but it’s grown into much more than that. Without being preachy you have a sweet testimony to the world around you. Your transparency and openness let us see your realness in dealing with everyday challenges and that those don’t need to get us down but that they are opportunities to grow and learn and do something new. All three of you are hard working and a stark contrast to so many in the younger generations that just want to sit around playing video games all day, wasting their lives away. Keep up the marvelous job guys! I look forward to watching the slow but steady progress all along the way as you restore this beautiful old home.
A trick to deal with digging out like Roman is doing at 18:01 is to grab a Sawzall and use a wood blade on the soil. You simply slice the wall into columns then break one off. The rest can just be cut as fast as the saw can go. Get a trenching shovel and toss the results into the wheelbarrow. It will greatly speed things up for the digger.
You guys are certainly doing a great job on this house. You will have these videos to share with all of your grandkids.
I legit look forward to this series every day keep killing it man. Roman is awesome
❤❤❤
So do I, these men are working hard. It's amazing to watch the brothers with different Mother's working so good together.
❤❤❤ 🙏
❤❤❤
Someday perhaps we'll hear how Cole met Roman and Juston. Roman's wife is one lucky lady, imo. We're blessed to get to know all 3 of these hard working and loving human beings 🙏
You three men work great together! I wish I was your neighbor! I so would be over there helping out! Your great great grandfather was stopping by to check on the progress and accidentally slammed a door….🙂
great job cole,i watched from the start , i must say you don't disappoint .
Usually the french drain is on the outside of the foundation.
True, half of the house has porch around it and no way to dig under it
yes, when its a new pour and they have easy access to the outer perimeter. Most basements also have this drain system inside and under the floor like he is doing. He also said in this video that he would like to do this to the outside one day.
Your incredible effort in restoring a $7,000 mansion and laying over 20 tons of rock in the basement showcases your determination and hard work, transforming history into a beautiful living space. And I am Floating Village Life
Thanks for the afternoon entertainment, guys ! 👍
God bless your buddies. That Roman's a beast. I heard the door upstairs. Great grandpa's home. 😮
I am so proud of all 3 of them. Working on a hundred year old house that wasn't done right in the first place is no easy feat. Cole is going to know the construction of the house inside and out, which will be invaluable to the coming generations. I applaud them for their knowledge and work ethic.
I wouldn’t say it wasn’t done right- it was done to the standards of THEIR day, not ours. They didn’t have building codes back then in the country.
Layering the sand in with the heavy clay should help with your ramp. I think that's why you found the sand. It was a way to protect the basement. We've been getting enormous amounts of rain during the night, and low temperatures during the day despite the hazy sunshine. The other night, we received 5 inches. South Central Iowa has been severely dry for over 2 years. Our rain has been soaking in, but our creeks and small rivers have come out of their banks this last week. It finally receded, and it rained again, and again. Most of the crops are lovin' this weather. 😊❤ But, I was thinking about your basement the other night. 😅 The Cornstar pool? 😊
Good evening from Montello Wisconsin
Getting all that gravel in place is another big step. 👍
First, I watch this channel only because I love to watch this project....
That being said, I have watched you guys do projects that were made far harder than needed BUT this one, I had to comment on! Lol
Y'all just dumped in stone, right to the footer, so that you can dig it back out to put in a drain system????
Ever think to just pile the stone in the middle, if not put the piping in first, to save a LOT of extra work that wouldn't be needed??
Just had to ask.
This is an amazing project to keep track of!
Making great progress, guys.
My grandfather spent an entire summer digging out the basement on his house on weekends and after work, all by hand. I’m enjoying seeing you guys bring this mansion back to life. Thank you for sharing this with us.
You men are doing a great job
Roman is always there to take up the slack and get jobs further along.
Digging under the old removed stairs, put a light up in the right hand corner, so we can see!! Watching from Kazakhstan.
Thanks for the Radon info Cole.
Hola Cornstar fans👋🏼
At least with all the rain, the corn will grow nice and tall... at least for a while. So, $$$$.... That's a good thing. Concrete pours are looking good. Your basement walls are still going to weep moisture, until you coat the outer portions of them, with concrete sealer membrane. Concrete is an open pored substance. Until you plug the pores in the 'crete, your basement walls are going to sweat.
Definitely put insulation on that basement floor. You will appreciate it in time. Cold floors are for penguins. Not humans.
Curious why you didn’t have the house lifted and pour all new floor and walls?
Nice seeing Roman wearing the merch 😊
You should hire Concrete line Pump. They will set up line and bring the concrete to every room.
I think he has said they were pumping the floor in, i think.
Cole I would Recommend That You put a Plastic Membrane Down to Keep The Radon under Your Basement so The Radon does Not seep up Through The Cement Floor👷👷👷. by the way Good Job & Keep up The very Good Work.
Robert (The Covered Bridge Man of Albert County, New Brunswick) Canada.
Plus it would form a good moisture barrier
Cole stop yelling 😂we can hear you take out your earplugs. Roman talks normal no yelling and we hear him just fine. Painful with my headphones 🎧 on I have to turn it up and down the entire time. I’ve been waiting to say this for a while but I finally had to. I will still keep watching regardless but well you know. 😊
Cole, your missing a great opportunity to build your Bunker!
Interesting perspective, got me thinking!
I get putting the drain inside the basement wall, but think you may wish to consider adding an outside line as well. If water, in enough quantity gets under the footings, it makes the soil softer. Softer soil allows the building to settle further into the soil. Of course, it doesn't do it equally, so 20-40 years from you, you'll develop large cracks in the foundation and find holes under the footings as the water washes the soil into your drainline and away from the footings. The reality is you never want water under the slab - and unless there's a spring somewhere, I doubt it would get into the center, but the footings with that floating floor? I think you might want to reconsider.
Everything is coming along nicely, great explanation about radon, so many people are not aware of how prevalent it is and how deadly it is. I was sort of under the impression that the extension was maybe part of Phase Two but it sounds like its going to be completed at the same time as the finish work on the main house, that is super cool!!!! Can hardly wait till the inside finishing starts...oh that is really exciting starting to see kitchen cabinets and bathroom fixtures go in, when I built my current home 9 years ago, it felt like an absolute lifetime passed getting from the basement pour to the time it was ready for drywall. Then one day I came drywall was going up, came a couple days later and I had a whole flippin kitchen installed!!! It is WILD how fast things go once you get to drywall :)
Justin is there for the paycheck. He works great when he wants too. Roman is cut from a different kind of cloth. Great man , father , husband. employee and friend
why wouldnt he be there for a check? He isnt there because they are friends, although it helps. He is a hired hand and so is Roman, they get along very well and to us , the viewers, we see them all playing around and being buddy buddy but they are there as workers that are getting paid.
Just an awesome video today Cole and Roman and Justin.
Sending my condolence Cole! I cant wait to see the basement done
I have loved watching this channel for years and am really enjoying the home reno and how to farm series, if I could make one suggestion / request, in editing, would you pleasw attempt to match the music played over the video to the voice volume, there is a lot of adjusting required to not go deaf when listening on headphones or speakers.
Thanks for updates on The Mansion renovations/remodel, I'm loving these videos so much.
You three guy's are amazing! I stop whatever I'm doing when I see your video's posted it's the highlight of my day. Love to you and all of your families!❤
100 year remodel
What a LOT of work! I admire your stick to it.
