I think the biggest mistake made is going alone while thoroughly inspecting that car should have had two or three officers with him better safe and sorry.
As someone who crosses the border at least 5 times a year, I agree. However as of early 2020 (I haven't crossed since COVID) I still see a single CBP officer performing the secondary inspection per car. If he/she finds something suspicious, then he/she calls for backup. However, there are also bazillion video cameras recording all time nowadays, so it looks very unlikely this would happen again. I guess a tragedy like this triggered changes in border crossings, but too bad someone had to die...
I love Anthony Call's voice, the narrator in this episode. He worked on all of the F.B.I. Files, and others, usually FBI-type investigations. Check out his work in CBS Workers Kidnapped And Murdered | Material Witness. (Outstanding documentary, also.)
Heartbreaking that he was found deceased Sometimes it's best to scream there and then because if they are going to shoot, they will anyway, but he would have been closer to his colleagues for immediate assistance. His unnecessary death really hurt me.
Killing the officer is where they screwed up. Had they just placed him somewhere and left him, the man hunt might not have taken on such an intense search. Criminals are so dumb.
Wouldn't his post have been empty? I can't believe even in '84 there weren't cameras. Poor man died protecting his country. He's a hero in my book. I hear police talk about 'luck' but I agree 100%, they understate that it is their own hard work that brings about that luck.
The Mexico border is like Swiss cheese and poorly maintained even now. Guess why the wall was such a popular idea for a while. It wasn't racism or hatred for *legal* immigrants, or even the illegal ones who are otherwise good people, it's shit like *this.*
I played officer Lathem in that series. The Del Rio police dept. and Border Control were great to to us when we were in Del Rio for the shoot. I can say it was difficult playing the part at times knowing what happened.
To be honest trying to cross the border immediately after doing a jewellery heist was retarded in the first place. They should have layed low in mexico for 6 months before crossing and fencing the goods. They paid the price for being so dumb. Also maybe should have just gotten a job in the first place and not been a scumbag to begin with 🤷
God bless that woman's momma for doing the right thing, and the Juarez police for putting the screws to the bad guys. God bless all our Border Patrol Officers, they truly protect us from vile individuals like those discussed here. They may never hear thank you, but truly all Americans thank them and remember Agent Lathem with them. May he live forever in joyous and loving memories of everyone who knew him, may they all find comfort his murderers were caught and paid the price.

It was great that all agents observed a moment of silent showing respect for their friend, Richard Latham. This was a true honor to a fallen hero. Too bad and too tragic he had to die at the hands of scumbag criminals. Sadly, today, to observe a moment of silent like all these agents did, doesn’t exist anymore. That was back then in 1984……not today. Very sad. Rest In Peace agent Richard Mack Latham always. 🙏🙏🙏
It was a really dumb idea to kill the officer cause they had no reasons to. Props to the mother for not getting involve and working with the fbi instead. 👏👏👏👏
Big mistake letting a single Hero check a car with four criminals. It hurts and tightens the heart to know the great pain of his family who expect him to return home after his work. Peace in his grave agent Richard Mack Latham forever.🇺🇸
Believe me, I know first hand, border stations “secondary interview” area has a additional officer permitting or denying departure. This senseless, needless murder is one more argument explaining the danger of border control worldwide.
They said his co-workers thought it was like a normal day every day at the border, as said in the videos. With one border inspector inspecting a car for any illegal items with either one or more than one person inside
This was decades ago. For precisely this reason they've completely changed standard operating procedures since then to prevent such a thing from ever happening again.
It's good that the criminal got caught thanks to the dedications and professional work of detectives and other law enforcements. A job that is very well done.
The name for that is felony murder. For their cooperation, two of the guys weren't charged with felony murder. And the underlying felony crime doesn't have to actually be murder. During the commission of a felony, if such felony results in death, the death can be classified as a felony murder and any and all participants can be charged with felony murder. An interesting example is if you and your buddies decide to rob a bank and end up in a standoff with the cops. If the cops shoot and kill one of you, the rest of you can and likely will be charged with your friend's death. Interestingly enough, the felony murder rule is what Minnesota used to charge, try, and convict Chauvin of murder.

Thank you for another great episode here in New York City 12:46 a.m. Saturday January 1st watching Happy New Year. Good job to the FBI's and the authorities for getting these garbage off the streets.
When it comes to border control, you would always expect to run into people smuggling drugs, guns, expensive stolen items or even murderers trying to escape the authorities after committing murderers. You would want to search the bodies of the car's passenger first to be sure that they have no weapons on them. And then make them stand some meters way from the car while it's been searched. Because while you are searching, you will have to enter inside the car yourself. This custom inspector made such a huge mistake that cost him his life, searching a car of 4 passengers who were all literally surrounding your butt in a very close range while he was poking his head inside their car all alone without being accompanied by any of his fellow custom inspector's officer. I guess after he was murdered, they probably have changed the searching procedures at the border, having 1 or 2 custom inspectors do the search while 1 or 2 custom inspectors keep eyes on the Passengers of the car. Very sad he lost his life. This could have been prevented.
I was told, in graphic detail, this horrible story during my US Customs Service Basic Inspector training in Glynco Georgia. This incident changed the way the border operated.....
this is a thorough investigation👍 . However, one thing bugs me all the time. when the victim is, in one way or the other a part of the law enforcement, it is often stressed as personal. this thought often leave me left out when you are not a working part of the law, legal, justice circle.
Heart Breaking for the officer 😢 They should have more security cameras, perhaps more officers since there are so many people crossing this border! As a former US Government we tried to do the best and they should get the best as well😢
What a tragedy. I hope border control policies were reviewed (I.e. more than one officer searching a car) to prevent such from happening again/minimised.
When cars/people entering the US are are sent to a station for a "secondary check," they should always have two (2) officers to do the "secondary checks." This way, they can avoid/prevent the kidnapping of officers. In addition, occupants of the car should be moved at least 50 ft. from the car being inspected, NOT standing by next to the car.
Murdering any law enforcement officer should be an automatic death penalty, with no reduction in sentence and no deals. All of them were accessories to this crime and should have got the same death sentence, carried out within 60 days or less. The word would spread, even across the border.

Isnt it funny that as we watch all these FBI re-enactments we think to ourselves, "Man, the bad guys should have been able to tell they were being followed by the surveillance teams."...LMAO...
Unfortunately of the three surviving crooks, none of them are in prison anymore. Samuel Olguin Mato (whose name was changed for some reason) and Ricardo Cortez have since been released (probably in 1997 and 2010 respectively). But worst of all, the shooter Rafael Calderon-Velasquez was released from federal prison in August 2020 despite getting a life sentence. He was sent back to Texas where he had a state life sentence there but was granted parole there as well in 2008. Everyone involved was upset with the decision and to date the federal government has refused to give a reason as to why he was released, not even to Latham's family. It's a complete slap in the face as far as justice goes.
Who in their right mind would be doing a search in a car with 4 young Passengers of the car surrounding him alone without any of his custom's inspector assisting him? I know I wouldn't be doing that.
Please make sure at least 2 officers are checking vehicles with more than one person in a vehicle. It should be mandatory for at least 2. When four or more in a vehicle, it should be 3 officers. Officers must be protected. Texas must have updated computer systems.

Rest In peace god bless his family forever good job to everyone involved solving the case god bless you all
God didn’t bless the security officer did he? Stupid
Isnt it funny that as we watch all these FBI re-enactments we think to ourselves, "Man, the bad guys should have been able to tell they were being followed by the surveillance teams."...LMAO...
Richard Mack Latham R.I.P.
1980's
Rest easy Agent Latham, we have the watch now. Thank you for your service.
Sad that you can't go to work then go home because of people like these.
Watching from Tanza in the Philippines
Please make sure at least 2 officers are checking vehicles with more than one person in a vehicle. It should be mandatory for at least 2. When four or more in a vehicle, it should be 3 officers. Officers must be protected. Texas must have updated computer systems.
Yes, two or three officers AND a police dog.
This was in 1984.....how would you like them to have updated computers when they weren’t created yet..
Calderon-Velasquez was released in September 2020 instead of spending is entire life in jail as per the sentencing shown in this show.
This was a senseless murder
