Top Dog Facts About the DACHSHUND
The Dachshund is a low-legged breed of dogs, originally from Germany. Short-legged hunting dogs have been used for hundreds of years, but there are conflicting opinions on when the specific breeding of Dachshunds began. Woodcuts from 16th century Europe and written accounts from the 18th century show that dogs similar to the modern Dachshund, combining the best qualities of hounds and terriers, were used commonly to hunt small animals. The dogs would follow the animal to its quarry, enter the burrow and kill it. Different physical features were deliberately bred into different bloodlines, to suit the prey and hunting conditions. Among the different varieties of Dachshunds, the short-haired is the oldest, giving rise later to the long-haired and wire-haired ones. Apart from the standard size Dachshunds, miniature Dachshunds were also developed to hunt smaller prey, such as rabbits. Though cross-breeding was discouraged even in the early stages of the breed’s development, by the time the different varieties reached refinement in the very early 1900s, cross breeding between varieties had been stopped almost completely.
    Time for some Ruff Trivia:
    - The first Olympic mascot was a Dachshund called Waldie. For which edition of the Summer Olympics was Waldie chosen as a mascot?
    o A: 1960, Rome
    o B: 1972, Munich
    o C: 1984, Los Angeles
What do you think, give it your best guess in the comments below before we get to the answer! Hang on tight and we’ll get back to this Ruff Trivia Question toward the end of the video.
The standard Dachshund adult has a height of 8 to 9 inches and weight of 11 to 32 pounds. The miniature adult has a height of 5 to 6 inches and weight of 1 to 11 pounds. It is typically long-bodied and stubby-legged. Front paws are paddle-shaped for digging. Skin is slightly loose, chest is deep and snout is long. Lung capacity is high for subterranean pursuit. The three varieties - short-haired, long-haired and wire-haired - have coat as described by their names. Colors seen have a wide range, but the common ones are black, blue, chocolate, fawn, red, cream and combination of some of these.
Grooming: While the long-haired Dachshunds do require extra care to prevent matting or retention of foreign matter, the frequency of brushing does not depend only on the hair length. Dogs with shorter hair can also be frequent shedders, and owners should adjust brushing accordingly. Nail trimming, ear cleaning and teeth brushing need to be regular.
Environment: A Dachshund is typically friendly and curious by nature. It lives up to its hunting ancestry through its eagerness to pursue animals, chase balls or go off on exploration trips in the lawn. It is generally tolerant of young children, but can get easily irritable around precocious kids. It takes time to get comfortable around new people, and is good as a watchdog. It craves family attention, and can get whiny and depressed if left alone.
Training: A Dachshund is a clever dog, but its stubborn nature can make training it a tough task. The dog can be difficult to housebreak, and requires patience. It is generally a highly energetic dog, and requires a moderate walk or a good game of fetch. Being short-legged, it can also get a reasonable amount of exercise indoors if it is living in a large house.
Health: The life expectancy of a Dachshund is 12 to 14 years. Its back is relatively weak, and intervertebral disc disease is a major problem seen in the breed. Bone related problems - both inherited and developed through injuries - are common. Some other ailments seen are epilepsy, allergies, cataract, retinal atrophy, glaucoma, deafness and diabetes. Diet control is essential as the breed is prone to obesity.
Developed originally to hunt small animals, the Dachshund today is one of the most suited companions for dog lovers living in the city. These small-sized, playful dogs are absolutely easy to take care of, and what’s more - they come in so many varieties, you are sure to find one that matches your tastes!

Dude lemme tell u something about my old dog. Laddie (my former doxie) would tear up any toy ever. So this one time at Target I bought a hard plastic bone. Because it said "Indestructible. Dog will not destroy." So I'm like ok, bet. So we get home, I open the bone and throw it in the room and walk off to go upstairs before I let the dog out. I mean it wasn't 10 minutes and that bone was in 50 pieces. I was like WHAT!? I had to call Mom in there. Crazy dude. He tore the shit out of that thing.

Talk about loyal! My sweet girl was totally devoted to me. I had her from the time she was @5 years old until she died at age 16. She would lie on my bed every night that I was on the computer and was perfectly happy to wait for us to settle down for sleep- but if I answered the phone and was talking with someone other than her, she started fussing at me, lol.
We went through SOOOOOOO much together: when I first got her, she started going into seizures within a day or two and I was afraid she had been poisoned. No, she had a bad case of heart worms when I got her- so we dealt with that. Years later, she had a stroke and could not even stand up.... I was a wreck. But my sweet girl was a fighter and in time she was herself again. Then a few months before she died, she had another stroke. She managed to bounce back from that one too.
When her time was about up and I had to decide whether or not to have her put to sleep. As she seemed comfortable and not in pain, I opted for just letting nature run its course so as to have as much time as possible- as long as she seemed happy and not hurting. The day she died, I HAD to go to work and it about broke my heart to have to leave her. I had a friend stay with her that day, so she at least would not be alone.
My girl had stopped eating a few days before and then stopped even drinking water. I could smell the ammonia on her breath, so it was clear to me that her organs were shutting down and that at her age, there was nothing a vet could do. I just kept loving her and telling her she was a pretty girl. I called home to check on her several times during her last day. I was told she had not gotten up or moved in any way, other than to occasionally lift her head to see if I was home yet.
When I got home, she was still alive. I rubbed her head and made a place for her on my bed, as she did not seem to want to be held close. I rubbed her tummy, like we had done every day for 11 years, when she would streeettttcccchhh and do the ballerina toes, little tail wagging so fast it seemed like the wings of a humming bird to me. She managed 3 whumps of her tail this last time.
I told her Daddy loved her- that Daddy would ALWAYS love her, but that it was OK for her to go ahead and do what she had to do. I moved over to my desk and made sure the light was not glaring in her eyes as she closed them for the last time. Within 20 minutes, she was gone. My girl had used every ounce of strength she had left to wait for me to get back home and say goodbye.
Damn- even typing this out, I am in tears while re-living the memory and it has been 3 years since I lost my girl. I've had 7 dogs in my life ( several at the save time for most of the last 20 years, so they could keep each other company on days I could not be with them as much as others) and have loved every single one of them, but this spunky little girl claimed me as her own to a degree none of the others have done.
I remember once when I was going on a trip for a few days ( scheduled my best friend to move to my house for the days I was to be gone) and had to run down to the car to get something, I walked back into the house to find my girl standing in the middle of my suitcase, as though she were packing herself to go with me. God I miss that beautiful little creature.

I have never been so close to any dog than I have with Oscar. He saved me from myself in my darkest time, we are a team and would die for each other. I sleep with my little buddy every night and he is more like a son than a pet. When we met, he was starving but I had no idea how much I was going to need him. Some angels trade their wings for big ears and arms for an extra pair of legs. Some guardian angels are less than two feet tall but stand as giants with more Love than humans are capable of.

@@HarryA12 They can, especially when they get overweight or jump off high levels. I have a ramp at my bed so he won't jump off and I am putting him on a diet. If a dachshund is taken care of, they will live longer than most dogs.

yes, weight gain can be a problem. It was a hard choice for me to make, but I finally started measuring my girls food. When I added a new dog to the household that was more timid, I trained HER to expect dinner and breakfast on a little settee, to make it harder for my doxie to snarf up her food also.
If you have a snarfer ( like one that just inhales the food), might I suggest something that a friend found useful:
One of my girl's puppies ( she had several liters before I got her) ended up with a friend. When he put on some weight that was not good for his back especially, the friend also took to measuring his food- but felt terrible that it was eaten in literally a few seconds. In order to slow him down at least a little on eating so fast, I suggested not feeding him in a dog bowl but instead using a muffin pan... a little of the food in each cell, so he had to find his crunchies instead of just inhaling them all at once. For them at least, this has seemed helpful. He also has had an issue with dry skin, so adding a few drops of olive oil to each meal has greatly improved his skin and coat. By a FEW drops of olive oil, I mean that quite literally: over-doing the oil would be bad for his heart... and Olive oil, not Wesson or Crisco or whatever. The vet agrees this has been a good strategy where this fellow is concerned.
As for the other behavioral bits, it sounds like being attentive is about all you can do there, and you are doing that already

I know what you mean. My Velvet used to bark at big dogs until they chased her, then she would run straight to me and jump into my arms continuing to bark. We had some sticky situations.

I have a catahoula curr / dachshund they are determined ass bastards. we were going to make more catahoula curr's but i am grateful as yusuke is my best friend. he is huge for a dachshund 35lbs . lots of squirrels around and i know if i let him he would kill them with ease. at first i was trying to be in control once i left him take the lead i was amazed on how capable he is. plus catahoula currs think they can climb trees

My short haired miniature Dachshund Heidi is my favorite dog I’ve ever had. It’s true that wiener dogs are stubborn she still shits and pisses in the house and she’s 5. She hates going outside unless it’s a rare occasion. About 75% of the day she’s under a blanket sleeping unless she knows it’s time for the mail man to come or for my siblings to get home from school. She barks at everything. She’s a huge brat but I love her to death. She hates our other little dog, she’s bigger than her but I’m not sure what breed she is. Her best friend is our oldest dog Daisy which is an 8 year old German Shepherd and they play all the time when she’s inside together.

Gwynneth Thompson, I have 2 old Dachshunds. No training is harder than the potty training, so focus on that, first.
If and when(!) the time comes that pee pads come into place, there are now washable under-pads that one can use. Get the biggest one you can get afford.

The word is german and you may give it as much german flavor as you want. It helps to know what sounds the spelling codes for though. The-chs is an -x kind of sound. The bending of long vowels like -ou in hound is a very specific english thing. German words generally has cleaner wovel sounds, whether long or short. Both wovels in "Dachshund" are short, like in "rap" and "bun"
When a word ends in -d it cuts of short so it almost sounds like a -t.
So, "Daxhunt" wouldn't be too far off.
Germans usually use the diminutive form "Dackel" or "Teckel" for the breed though.
