My Solution to the Front License Plate Law

- In Virginia, we're required to have a front license plate displayed at all times. I think it makes cars ugly. So how can I both have a license plate, and not at the same time?
This was NOT a sponsored video, but if you would like to buy this license plate bracket you can do so here: www.amazon.com/Electric-Power...

Take it out when cops sound the siren.
Gtm Nayan so what do you tell the power tripping cop when they say it wasn’t displayed when you passed me?
Then you fucked up big time. He will obviously have a look and cops are familiar with retractable license plates. And most people using these plates aren‘t as innocent as the creator of this vid, they usually use them to run away from the cops. So he‘ll be in big trouble.
Gtm Nayan the cops would just get mad and give a ticket for not properly displaying the front plate thank god I live in ga and they don’t require it 🤔 I could get a bumper for my mustang that doesn’t have the mount and I can have the lights.
Idk about your state, but Virginia has cameras in the front and back of the squad car.
I want the JAMES BOND one that has multiple plates both sides and smoke and rocket and machine guns and drink and gamble and have more women then BILL Clinton
I saw a guy with his front plate on his passenger sun visor
A true madlad
Free flip plate mod lmao
I thought thats how everyone does it?
lol i do that and live in NYC.
Magic Cat I have no idea if it’s illegal here in Utah, because I’ve been driving without one forever
Edit: It is illegal, but it’s a secondary offense, so you can only get a ticket when you’re pulled over for something else
Does it hold up at 160mph?
Asking for a friend...
probally you can go a fast as you can probally the vibration could break it
Idk but it's great for mustang drivers who flee the scene after hitting a group of pedestrians. No worries of leaving behind evidence.
Ha!!!
No. Will snap off.

Here in Australia, and heaps of other countries, makes it compulsory for manufacturers to include a front license plate mounts to the car, which they take into consideration when designing the bumper, so looks are not really an issue here.
Every car sold in the has provisions for mounting license plates. Either the front bumper is formed with a plate mount or an optional mount is included.
@@Suubie Rex - I disagree. My Holden Commodore (aka Chevrolet SS) would look like garbage with the front plate bracket installed. The bumper was most definitely not designed for a plate of any kind. That said, when I am able to mount the bracket without resorting to drilling holes thru the bumper face, I'll consider it.
Yea this is the only good thing our country Australia does lol

My car has a straight pipe system with a remote controlled varex muffler (look it up), when open it's way too loud to be legal, when closed it's quieter than the factory exhaust. A cop pulled me over once, had the biggest wtf moment of his life.
So it's like a cutout that routes the exhaust to a freer flowing path?

They did that in Japan after they put speed cameras all over their favorite highway racing circuit. However, theirs was activated by speed with some springs. It was in the old days.
But where are you going to mount it? most of the time it looks ugly when the plate isnt mounted in it's intended place. I would get plate flipper or hider where a black curtain would come down and cover it

There is also this clear paint you can spray on your plate so that the numbers can't be photographed.

Half the idiots in this comment section completely missed the point of this device. It's only supposed to be retracted for car shows and other special events where the license plate may ruin the styling of the car. His Subaru, for example, was not designed to have a front plate and as a result, it looks worse with it on. And for the people asking why he'd bring that thing to a car show: You don't need a good looking car to attend a car show. They're not just about looking at cool cars. They're places where fellow car enthusiasts can meet and share their passion for cars. Go to one and you'll see what I mean.
all cars in japan are MANDATORY front plate. Subaru is a japanese company. Just because they didn't put it there, doesn't mean they didn't want you to do it.

@@TeXasDadBod unwarranted sarcasm. If you read through the comments you will see that most people do need to be told what was in the video. I don't know, maybe lots of people don't pay attention or they don't watch the whole video, or they are just plain stupid.
Here in Germany the license plate is almost 60cm wide (about twice the width of the US-one), and it has to always be on the front, with no folding mechanisms or anything.
If you get lucky with the guy at the "offices" you can get a special permit to mount it off to the side or use a special shortened version.
If you're caught without a front plate in a very closely defined area your car is pretty much declared not road-legal right on the spot, and you have to either mount the plate properly immediately or get the car towed.
Same in the UK. However we are allowed to display any plate as long as it's visible to a speed camera and has the correct spacing. It is also "required" to have a blue GB with a European star emblem on it, however as of March 2017 this wont be required as the UK has unfortunatley left the EU. We're allowed to re-locate and resize plates however we want, plenty of taxis use the square plates used of Land Rovers so they can have the Taxi ID in a better place on modern cars. See here: upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/6/6d/2010_Mercedes_S350_Bluetec_taxi_(15780750655).jpg
Dylan 'Robin' Harwood The plate on the taxi you showed is about the size of the special plate you can try to get in germany.
It's only handed out if you can prove that your car can't "house" the standard plate (if you import a car from the US, they may even have you swap out the bumper/trunk-lid to fit the normal plate).
*****
Wow, that's harsh! We can just pop down to our local car parts strore and get one made for about £25! (~€30?)
Dylan 'Robin' Harwood In Germany when you register a car you can go to "sign-makers" too, but previously you have to register a combination of (partly chosen) numbers and letters.
Also, you can have the signs made in any shape and colour you want, but only ones in the correct shape and colour(s) with a register-able text on them "count" officially.
Same goes for Sweden, and i dont give a shit :P License plate doesnt ruin the look, they are just there..
I want to see a video of you getting pulled over for it and then just flip it out when youre getting pulled over

Here in Australia you can get different sizes of license plates to suit your vehicle. You can also get them in different colours to suit your vehicle even more.
To be honest you could have it inside your car on top of the dash.
That is how many of us do in Europe.
People still get pulled over for it surprisingly
Many of my friends have still been ticketed for this unfortunately.

The law is the same in British Columbia where I grew up but when I moved to Quebec, it was so weird to see everyone not having a front license plate. There's really no reason for them.
I got a ticket in SoHo, NYC, parked on the street. Not allowed behind glass or plastic, mine was on the dash, clearly visible, $62. Just a plain old Mercedes wagon. So I wrote a whiny letter, "stripped screws, I just registered it that morning" blah blah, and they dismissed it.
CORVAIRWILD you can’t display your plates on your dash. Your windshield is made of glass.
I'm pretty sure your "solution" is more illegal than your no tag problem. Having the ability to hide your plate might be considered as not properly displaying equipment or conspiracy to commit a crime. (you know how virginia is).
I'm not saying this is dumb by any means and understand the jackass law, I live in virginia. I live in a much smaller town that looks for much smaller laws to bust you for, pulled over for ear plugs hanging on rear view mirror. Pulled over to measure height of bumper to the road. Pulled over for 2 inch crack line in windshield (but i see people with the entire side or rear window out and that "clear" plastic over it going past cops all the time). Pulled over because the lens on my rear side marker (near the fender/wheel well) was broke. "if it is on your car it has to work" What crap.
Actually failed an inspection because of ear plugs on the rear view mirror. He went as far as putting the sticker on the window, told me why I failed, said I could remove the ear plugs and he would pass me. I went out and pulled them down, he removed the sticker and put on a pass. THEN he charged me the extra dollar for having to inspect it again.
This device is legal in all states that require front plates. I still don't like though.
therealdeadpen I
it's only really illegal if you use it to dodge toll gate fees by obscuring your plate to avoid ticket cams. As long as you display it while driving and only hide it as he said during shows it is totally legal. Just dont try to wait till your getting pulled over to pop it out as that will get you a ticket for being a smartass.
All in the name of safety. Spelled R-E-V-E-N-U-E, safety!!😕
I really been considering and getting one of these however if a vehicle is 25 years or older you don't require a front plate in my state I have a 1995 3000GT and a 1997 3000GT and would hate to mess with the original front bumpers if I don't have to.
I worked at Jeep Assembly in Toledo ...at one time I put the front license plate brackets inside the Jeep if it was going to a state that required front plates .
I was so glad when I moved to a state that doesn't require the front plates. I've asked cops if the front plate makes a difference to them, and they said no. They look at the rear plate 99% of the time.
The biggest thing is if they have a suspect that lets say robs a store, and the security camera only catches the front of the car, they have identification, in states with no front plate they wouldnt have any identification...
VazDrae Studios Most vehicles used in robberies, are either stolen, or have stolen plates on them.
Although it's still somehow legal to just throw them up on the dash where it won't be legible in person or on cameras anyways. Seems more like a way to make money off tickets.
TheBonzomatic oh ya having a front plate is such a horrible life experience one should move to a diff state. moron.
I believe all 50 states should require a front license plate visible at all times.
I agree front plates are ugly. But mounting it on the side makes it even uglier.
EXACTLY!!!!
I would put it on the dashboard
Some cars like Ferraris made not to have a front plate
CJ5797 if you drove your car like a car guy should drive his car, you'd know that setting it up in the dash will fail every time. Take a corner at speed, and woah look, suddenly your plate is in the floorboard or your lap
Not necessarily I have put a tag on the dashboard before numerous times I know what I'm talking about and it did not slide at all
I stand corrected what I said
That's all
you do whatever you want with your car I'll do whatever I want mine that's it
In the Czech republic only bikes, temp plates and exceptions can show just the back plate but all cars and truck have to show both. Sometimes its ugly but other times it feels that the car is missing something because sometimes it is incorporated into the design of the body.
you could probably add a cherry switch behind it (so when the plate retracts it hits it), and wire that up to an LED inside so you know when it's retracted or not.
That dirty ass plate lmao
My city state requires a front plate and I actually like it because it protects the front bumper from careless parkers.
Terri Bel Bliss bumpers were first intended to protect the car (they could bump into things and the car is still ok). now we need license plates to protect the bumpers so the bumper doesn't bump into anything, only the plate does.. hahahaha
The irony of it all.
Wouldn't be a problem if bumpers weren't so darn expensive.
and this is why i park far as possible away from the grocery store
Jeff C i just paid $130 usd for mine.... A front plate wont help animals that i cant avoid because im mid curve doing 70mph
In New York State where I live the front liscenence plate has to be attached to the front bumper of the vehicle at all times .
And in Quebec, there is no front license plate. It looks so scary to me that the cars have no front license plates. It looks confusing as hell when all of sudden someone from Dortmund is showing up and his rear plate says: "Quebec - Je me souviens". Some people put in foreign license plates in front.
I didnt even know there are countries or states that don't require front license plates. In germany, no car is sold without a holder for a license plate on both front and rear
They might try to charge you with a crime if you drive through a toll booth with it pulled in.
worried about if it is in or out .. wire it to your ignition .. Turn the car on plate goes out and when you shut it off plate goes in

jeremy kagchelland you really can't notice there's magnets so no one steals it
Glad we dont do that crap here in Michigan. Whats the point of a front plate anyway?
so they can run your plate if you're behind them. One of the dumbest requirements I have witnessed quite frankly.
Because cops coming in the opposite direction can easily see that your car is registered.
Nysguy2003 so those pigs can use it to radar you
There is absolutely no relation between a license plate and radar usage. (smh) Watch baseball much? There's no plate on a baseball but they use radar to show a 98 MPH pitch.
dfhowes
If you look really closely at a baseball, you will see a little license plate.
So what if you put this on the front and back bumper and if you decide to run from the cops you can pull them in and they can’t run your plates but meanwhile you can put your plates out when you want to drive around so you don’t get in trouble for not having plates
I worked at California Toyota Design, and when a designer he asked me about his design, I told him he needed to design a place for the front license plate. That the front bumper look would be ruined if just tacked on. Told him to do something like a 1992 Corvette. It has a removable panel the says Corvette that follows the bumper lines; those states that require front plates simply remove the panel for a well designed mounting location. The designer said he really never thought about that, and agreed with me. The caveat is he also said "It'd be too hard." Sadly, Corvette ended that after the 2005 model year.
why have the stupid remote? why not wire it to extend when you start the car, and retract when you turn it off..... that would make way more sense to me.
Russell Early That would be a great mighty car mods episode.
@@datalt7873 it definitely would
Because he takes the car to car shows. You often turn on the engine at car shows to drive it around and shows off the engine. In that case, a front license plate on a car not designed to have a front license plate is a detriment. And before you point out that he'd be breaking the law at car shows then, the license plate laws only apply when you are driving on public property. Car shows are done on private property.
It's made of cheap plastic, for one. No need for the motor and moving parts to go through that much wear and tear by moving every time the car gets turned on or off.

My solution was high quality suction cups for the front license plate holder on my wife's 03 Cobra. I didn't want to drill holes in her front bumper to mount the ugly plastic stock front plate holder. I happened to have 4 high quality silicone suction cups that had threaded inserts from some previous project so I used them on the back of the plate holder and it has worked perfectly (haven't lost a plate) for 2 years at 120+ MPH : ) ... It has held on amazingly well even in hard rain, when I'm showing the car I just pop it off (takes a bit of effort to get the suction cups to release) and voila! Clean bumper!
Me I would've just worked it up to the key so when I turn to the key to start position it will come out
As someone who lives in a country where front plates have always been required by law, this sounds like a weird complaint to me

When I bought my new car the dealership drilled holes for the license plate, but they did so off center at least an inch. Who does that? Drills holes in someone's car without asking them and then doesn't even drill them right? I made the dealership patch and color match the bumper. As far as I know in Nevada you have to have a front plate if your bumper is designed or you dealer drills holes for a license plate. I drive a fusion, it's not meant to have a plate.
I thought you were gonna say just put it on anyway, but this is fantastic

I got pulled over in Appomattox, AT NIGHT, for one of two lights illuminating the rear plate being burned out. The cop was “ you should have more knowledge of your vehicle condition”. How am I supposed to know? I’m in the car, not behind it
What's it like owning a car like that in California? I hear they have really stringent regulations on cars over there that worsen gas mileage and hinder performance, and when I was buying the cold air intake for my car I read that it's illegal to have one installed over there (or sell one). How do car enthusiasts work around that?

There are a few companies that make/sell these but they all have the same flaw. You have to hold the button. ??? How do you know when it's finished (or if it even worked at all) from inside the car?
Sooo you have an in and out button but you dont know if the plate is in or out so you have to check to see if you hit the right button....?
Front plates are absolutely disgusting. I love that my province doesn't require them. My car would be even more ugly with it.
What province is that
We don't have them here in Tennessee.
Most cars have a rectangular imprint for a front plate in the bumper, when there is no plate there it looks more ugly.

The only reason in England you'd not want a front number plate, is if you had a massive intercooler behind the bumper.
Instead of the video method, which only works in places you are legally allowed to drive on the road without one. It still potentially blocks the air to the intercooler so....redirect.viglink.com/?format=go&jsonp=vglnk_154664457462116&key=c00b16f9b8ea0aebcf155638e86db91d&libId=jqio8bso0100kp46000MAc91d8u48&loc=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.focusstoc.com%2Fforums%2Ftopic%2F158050-number-plates%2F&v=1&out=http%3A%2F%2Fs1108.photobucket.com%2Fuser%2FCJW07aab%2Fmedia%2FIMG_20130712_185239_zpsbc9c204a.jpg.html&ref=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F&title=number%20plates%20-%20Focus%20ST%20Mk2%20Discussion%20-%20Focus%20ST%20Owners%20Club&txt=

Why is it so hard to just put a freaking license plate on a car?
Matthew Gailey I don't really mind having front license plates but, when I wanna do crazy stuff at night people have something called a phone and they can record you and report you,
RXKLastZ1 so they just become oblivious of the back of your car?
flipping license plates my friend, oh and plastic dipped car as well
He has a nice car with a prestine bumper, to install a front license plate would mean drilling 4 holes in it and mounting an ugly piece of metal to his bumper.
RXKLastZ1 simple solution, tape paper on both plates. Or other solution. Don't do shady ass stuff at night.
In England, some people just put the reg plate in their front window. That way they can easily remove it if they want to
I have a 2019 GS F sport I have no idea how to install it because it has no mouth grill with a hole.
haha you need to have a front and back one in Australia it's no big deal.
AndyAndromedaArt in Queensland if you’re car is 2015 or newer you don’t need a front one
haha in Australia you aren't allowed to have a loud BOV in the US it's not big deal
r32-r34 gtr's are r32ez to get here in aus
MrTacticalSloth Source?
he made it up
Idk why this is in my recommendations but I’m glad it was cause I was talking about this cause I don’t like the front plates
If you were talking about it anywhere near your phone then that's probably why it recommended it to you.
In Montana we have to have the front plate also, but if your vehicle doesn’t have the bracket on the front we just put them in the front windshield so it is visible and it’s acceptable
Around here, people just put the license plate on the inside of the windshield. I actually saw a JDM S13 on Craigslist that did that so it could have a Japanese front license plate
How dare that cop wrote you a ticket for not having a front plate just months after writing you a ticket for not having a front plate and most likely telling you to get a front plate...
Xavier Moavero yup fuck that cop go take care of some real crime
Dolly DeHart no reason to have laws if people don't get tickets.
if i decided for styling preference i didn't want indicators I couldn't just not have them.
VanSanPro no one deletes turn signals for "styling purposes" so that's a terrible anology 😂 but fuck you might as well cause 99% of you idiots don't use them😧😅
Its easier to report a drunk driver when they have plates front and back. No brainer
How? The front plate isn't lit at night. They are usually tailgating anyway.
Have you thought about maybe just putting a soft rubber piece on each side of plate piece or some sort of cushioning rather than grease?
In NY State we have a lot of plate-reading, non-stop tollbooths. So I think just having one of these installed (regardless of whether you use it or not) is illegal...
so... it took you 3 tickets and $270 to start obeying the law?
Jonathan Howard stupid law
It is not a stupid law. It exists because if you are speeding speedcams can photograph your car and automatically send ticket to you using character recognition of your license plate.
Traffic cams are a racket. It's been proven in parts of California that yellow light times were reduced soley to increase revenue at the cost of people's lives
simple solution: don't run a yellow light.
everyone knows to speed up for yellow lights lol
Lives in VA, got a Cali republic shirt ahahaha
I'm in VA too so I know how it is!
Farooq Z. Hahah didn’t even realize that lol .. makes sense to wear that lol
I WAS EXACTLY THINKING THE SAME THING!!! I wondered, "hmmm, I wonder if anyone caught that..." Good perception my friend...
Farooq Z. There’s a lot of California shirts at my school.. We’re in Virginia.
I run a tow hook license plate bracket, and since I always have a tool kit in my trunk, I just unscrew the bolt itself with an adjustable wrench and pop on the tow cover whenever I’m doing a photo shoot or at a meet. Takes 1 minute, cost me ~25 bucks. 2008 Benz C63 Amg.
This thing looks awesome. In a similar situation right now. Didn’t wanna put a relocator. No tickets so far but this thing looks awesome
All about the Revenue for the local municipalities
Sean Jones yup some of that money goes to the judges
Stupidest shit I have ever read. It is so the law enforcement and speed cameras can photo your licence plate and connect you to the car if speeding for example.
Sean Jones , yeah and they make sure we buckle our seatbelts too because they care a lot about our safety. To the point that they ticket us and forget to put them on our buses/school buses. Let's all just stop being dumbies and listen to these laws that go against our original Constitution. Let's all be good citizens
The constitution is not made for you, it was made to keep the government in check. Second of all, if you would take the single fucking second it takes to google this, buses don't hve seat belts because of their immense weight and slow speeds. Making it very hard to actually die, while in a shitty little car made of some fucking cheap-ass chinese aluminium won't be able to do the same and you'll just straight up fucking die. Now, honestly I've answered so many of these questions already that it wouldn't bother me, but for your safety and others on the road, please be sure to wear a seat belt, go with reasonable speeds, and stop sucking off the constitution already. Let's all be good humans, and instead of hating people fucking for no reason, doing their job, let's remember that they were put in place to stop fucking retards like me and you.
Get a car that can outrun the cops and you won’t have to use any license plates
Put a pilot light in your cabin to indicate its position. I’d have to take a closer look at its design (maybe mail me one 😉) but you could probably use some sort of contact (magnetic?) or a pressure switch.
LMAO “they gave me this box with a bunch of papers with words on it-throw those aside...”
Odd, I've never noticed that the front plate was an ugly distraction when I'm driving the car.
Drew Thompson Wait till you have a cool car. As a Michigan driver who doesn't need them, believe me when I say they look stupid. Buck toothed. You are used to looking at them.
Front plates have always been mandatory in the UK. I can't see the problem in having them, unless you've stolen the car.
It ruins the look of the car
PageMonster do all ur cars come with front plate mounts? Not every one does here. And most people dont wanna drill holes into their new 50k car. Just to have to buy a $200 bumper for it to be mint again.
Jay, In the UK the plates are put on by the dealer before you even buy the car and you never have to remove them - the plates stay with that car for life. Simplest system in the world for transferring ownership. Owner gives you their V5C form (with the vehicles plate on it and their signature), you fill in your address, send it to the DVLA, they send you a new V5C saying you now own the car, take V5C to local post office, pay car tax and now you've bought a car from someone and can legally drive it.
InsaneGamers Ah. In America, we get our plates in the Mail, and we have to put them on ourselves. And if a window sticker is required in a state, we as the buyers also have to put them on ourselves. Plates are to be removed, if vehicle is sold to another person, or dealership. Because the current plates are registered for YOU and YOU ONLY, and the new buyer must pay for another plate different for what your plates are. To be honest, all of you in the UK sort of have it far more simple, than us here in America! 😂
cuz they ugly as fuck
In New Jersey, some people just tape it to their front windshield on the inside.
Trainfan1055 that just makes a car more uglier.
Here in NYC because of all the crazy tolls, you have a lot of people using these and also the plate "flippers" that allow 2 plates to flipped like james bond. However, they made them completely illegal and it's a criminal charge of tampering with a plate as opposed to a violation of not having the plate at all.
same law in Jersey. . . nothing new
I'm from Ohio and I see tons and tons of people without front plates when it's required. It makes me wonder how they all get away with it. Maybe there's just so many the cops don't care?
Utah is the same way. They even changed the law day you can't get pulled over for it. You have to get pulled over for something else first, then they can ticket you.
That's a neat contraption. If I didnt have a bumper made to hold a front plate, I'd do it. Plus I like the off center plate. It looks good when displayed.
This is so cool! I just moved to North Carolina from Virginia and that was one of the things I hated about traffic laws in Virginia 😭
Drive without the plate showing and when u get pulled over pop out the plate and confuse the hell out of the cop
That is so illegal in the Netherlands
JSF It's illegal almost everywhere. I mean, like, "zooo illegaal".
JSF yes but you are allowed to buy drugs right!
@@valicourt NETHURLAANDS FUCK YEAAH FREEDOOOM (parody)
Dit is niet verboden
Check with your State Department of Motor Vehicles. Some states with front license plate laws require the plate to be affixed to a "Dealer Authorized License Plate Frame" Attached to the Front Bumper of the Vehicle.
Can you determine the age of the car by its plate in the us bc you can in the uk for example BV17 WGH. BV is where the car is registered and 17 is for early 2017 and for late 17 to early 18 is 67 I.e BV67 XSY
