Great worl guys, As always. Quick question. Can I use regular pavers over open graded rock base or must the pavers be specifically open graded pavers that have the larger gap in between them?
Thank you, you certainly can use regular pavers. I always use regular pavers on open grade base then I use polymeric sand. It is called a Hybrid install.
Love your videos. I am a DIYer and planned on a couple of small patios, but now I want to do something fancier. You use several pavers of different sizes when creating your random pattern. How do you determine the number of each size you need? Do you have a ratio or some funky formula? I tried googling around, but all the calculators aim at a single, boring paver size. Looking forward to more content.
Nice, glad to hear it! These 3 piece paver designs come with all 3 sizes on the pallet, I showed it and mentioned it in this video actually. So the ratio of each size is predetermined already. And when laying the pavers, you just watch out for a few things while laying. Here is a link to a video where I explain it in much more detail 👉ua-cam.com/video/HG6EJZ7pPj8/v-deo.html
What is the compaction height you account for using 1/4 clean stone? I’ve always used sand and usually count on 3/16 compaction with the plate compactor. I don’t see you using a plate compactor after laying pavers anymore. I installed a 3 tier retaining wall so I have two 7 foot walks and a 16x20 patio at base. Interested in trying, just the whole old dog new tricks.
I have found 1/4" is perfect to account for compaction with this bedding stone. I switched from dense grade base / sand bedding to this method over 5 years ago now... I will never go back. This method has been a game changer, I completely recommend trying it ✌
Look to add some paver edging for my backyard lawn. Really like the belgard Melville curb. Would you install this like a paver patio? Open grade base and concrete edging on both sides? Thank you
Would you use the open base method up against a house with a basement? Basically would you worry about to much water draining down along the foundation of the house ?
I definitely would use this method against a foundation. The main thing is to be sure your subsoil slopes away from the foundation. At that point the water will shed away and then drain down into the subsoil no problem.
hey thanks for the great contents. I've been researching before my DIY project. I'm thinking about putting gazebo on top of 70mm stones, interlocking. Would you say it is safe to put the gazebo on top of the stone (70mm)? or should I have footings where 4 gazebo posts are going to stand.
Crazy, I was up until Midnight last night trying to find someone that sold a tool similar to an enxada for a patio Im doing in Lincoln, RI. I need something better matched for removing roots so ended up with a McLeod tool. Brazilians and Guatemalans are unmatched in landscape, hard scape, and tree work around here. Seems like Mexicans tend to stay in warmer climates in the US but I know they do top notch work as well
That's funny, they are tough tools to find but man are they worth it! And I totally agree with what you said, and it sure does seem like the Mexicans like warmer climates... All the Mexican guys I know around here hate the winter...LOL ✌
Hey what’s up Kyle and Benny! I started my back patio finally, just a quick question, do you actually go down 10 inches on stairs and simple walkways and do you think it’s necessary to put French drains behind smaller walls like in front of this property? Btw this looks great so far!!
8-10 inches is my basic depth. Never less than 8 though. And french drains are not always necessary... Only when you are installing in an area that currently has water issues before building. At that point, you want to have some kind of drainage plan.
Awesome, what are you setting the screed rail heights to? The height the step riser on the upper end and the tread on the bottom end minus the depth of the paver?
Do you have any issue with chipmunks going under your walkways? The house we moved into had an existing paver walkway. The chipmunks tunnel under it and the pavers collapse. Whomever installed it used sand as the paver base. I was curious if the clean rock fill would make a difference
That is a great point I never mention... this method prevents critters and insects from disturbing the base. Chipmunks can not tunnel through this stone because it will cave in on them if they try. It is great for preventing issues like that ✌
Thanks! I learned so much from your content. I am a diy'er for now with old school experience. Thinking of getting my kids into the biz. You have taught me the new and better ways of installation. Do you have an email? Would love to send you a Pic of my projects.

We could have but it would have caused a lot of turf / flower bed damage. Sometimes it is better to do projects like this by hand to prevent damage. That was the main reason for it
I just started on one side and laid to the other, once I got to the other side I knew how centered I would be. Then I could shift it either way a small amount to make it perfect. But it ended working great. I always try to lay the pavers out with as little cuts as possible.
Have a question if you can answer. If before excavating the lowest level of the patio area away from the house is 5 inch lower than the upper level. When excavation , should we excavate 9 inch on the lowest size and the upper point will be 9+ 5 =13 inch . Is the understanding correct?
Been watching a ton of your videos! About to do a front walkway to my porch, it’s only 3ft x 18 ft. I’m struggling with the slope on this as each side of the walkway has a brick edging border. Can I just slope the 18 ft down to the driveway and not have a slope into the brick edging? It would essentially only have a slope in one direction, but not sure if I should try to pitch slightly to this edging as well as longways out to the drive? I’m planning to do an open grade base as drainage is my main priority especially with thick clay soils
If the polymeric sand was done right, you can power wash it lightly. But if the polymeric sand is loose and coming out of the joints, you should power wash the pavers heavily and remove the failed polymeric sand. Then once you are done cleaning it, install new sand
And that is why the Takeuchi and Kuboda are superior being able to get out with the roll up door Can’t do that with any other brands STONE DUST!!!! NO GOOOOOOD!!! And I see people still unfortunately using it 😢

I know what you mean... but those were some very old pavers and most of the time it is not worth palletizing things like that to save / repurpose. At the end of the day it just cheap concrete. And the places we take stuff like that too crush them up and make concrete sand to be re purposed in other ways. ✌

I mean that patio was still in good structural condition. It was weathered, yes, but it was probably a good 10+ years old. You make it sound like it was dangerous to walk on lol
It actually held together surprisingly well. I would think mid to late 90’s it was installed judging by the wear. Real curious what these newer style pavers will look like in 20-25 years. I’m personally not convinced they will hold up as well. Mostly due to the different processes in manufacturing and the finer aggregates on the face. Only time will tell.
It was in decedent condition, quite a few pavers were crumbled… not sure if you seen that. There were a few ares that sank and I’m pretty sure the customer had it repaired a couple times. And I definitely wasn’t making it sound like you couldn’t walk on it.Lol. They would have held up much longer with a clean stone base, that’s all I’m saying. Stone dust has been proven to make pavers deteriorate quicker and this was a good example of it ✌🏻
Correct, the old pavers get crushed into concrete sand and then recycled for different uses. And I have worked for and seen so many companies save pavers like this and put them in their yards to use or sell down the road.... But they never actually do and they just end up having yards full of old materials that just sit there for years on pallets. I try to get rid of anything like this simply because it is just old concrete and it takes a lot more effort to palletize pavers like this and move them around, compared to loading them up and hauling them to a concrete recycler. ✌
