  • We’re in the age of the argument, and charges of hypocrisy have overrun our political and cultural discourse. But Lou wonders - does it matter if people are genuine? And are we getting distracted by unimportant character issues?

    FWIW - You can make the argument that when a spokesperson seemingly violates his/her professed beliefs - that actually strengthens his/her argument. A smoker who can’t quit cigarettes, for example, isn’t a hypocrite when he tells his son not to smoke. He’s proof that cigarettes are addictive, a good reason for his son not to start in the first place. And, the fact that Al Gore has a big carbon footprint can be interpreted as a sign that even a die-hard environmentalist can’t avoid fossil-fuel consumption, therefore the government should adopt policies that make alternative energy easily available.

      I think hypocrisy is only good to keep in mind when dealing with that individual in the future, and only when the hypocrisy is more akin to what Mitch your speaker of the house has done with things like the scotus nomination, letting the debt balloon to 1 trillion, I just don't know how you can not believe he is going to lie and play games I think the American people have to say to people like that NO just NO you were not highered to fight with democrats at all cost then remake the country into a All-White male run government. It is scary because it really feels like they won already way back when we had thought we were safe from this insidious brainwashing.

      Gore could avoid fossil fuel consumption - he could travel in a Tesla or other E vehicle. Hell, Arnold even had an E Hummer made for him. Now *THAT'S* the way to swing your political weight around.
      The smoker or Al Gore you mentioned are the losers in their hypocritical battles. The smoker has a history of experience and that alone does validate his words more but not to the extreme. A true leader *leads by **_example_*_ and this will never change._

    • @sampinerdiscgolf
      @sampinerdiscgolf 6 років тому +1

      Louis Foglia in your example of Al Gore still using fossil fuels despite environmental beliefs, does that necessarily make him a hypocrite or is he more or less forced to make decisions against his personal beliefs because of a lack of alternatives? With the smoker, is he a hypocrite if he lacks the willpower to stop despite wanting to?

    I agree with the "the message has nothing to do with the messenger" part of hypocricy, but there is a part of it when someone holds teo viewpoints that are contradictory, that does matter, because it shows inconsistancy in a persons thinking, and inconsistancy leads to bad thinking.

    You're missing the point that why hypocrisy is so terrible is because it makes it safe to assume that the hypocrite doesn't actually care about the issue they're talking about. Instead, they could just be saying it to gain publicity, to sound smart, or for some other dishonest reason. How can one care for climate change if they drive a hummer, own a coal power plant, and eat only beef for every meal? It's not the same as a smoking father telling his son not to smoke because he's actually addicted and can't physically stop without extreme effort, he's sharing wisdom with his son from a lesson he learned the hard way. A fossil fuel guzzler can stop any day or at least be planning to stop, but the hypocrite doesn't, it's not like they're addicted to gas, they can physically stop if they wanted to but they're just greedy
    There's an evolutionary reason as to why humans hate hypocrites and it's likely for a good/beneficial reason

      young or old, all can fall victim to manipulations of human emotions. Emotional responses are reactionary and unless we put forth effort to think logically, and try to separate the core substantive arguments from our emotions, our path towards the truth or to a future thats in humanity's best interests will be continually diverted

    good idea, Lou. The underlying idea. Immigration. What the left, right, media...everyone is NOT talking about...the reason(s) people leave their home country, walk (presumably) thousands of miles, risk many dangers and arrest just to get to the USA. Lou, you and BEME could report on Mexico, Equador, etc. where things are SO bad that tens of thousands flee. What are THOSE governments doing, or not doing? Let's look at the cause and explore that.

    Sorry man but carbon credits are actually a very valueable way to help the environment while not damaging the economy as much as alternatives. If this is some outrage tactic I would consider you yourself a hypocrit; even if it isn't you are still throwing a movement to save the environment under the bus for a quick, lazy, unresearched punchline of a soundbit. Please be more considerate in the future and put in the research. You do a decent job with nuance but better knowledge will only improve the show.

    With the whole Al gore and decaprio part. It does kinda make sense because if they really believed that climate change was such a bad thing then they would act themselves to stop it more than they are, it makes their message null and hard to believe, whether it is true or not. For instance if a doctor tells you you need to stop smoking but is a smoker themselves then it would make you think, well if smoking really is that bad then surely they would have stopped as well

    • @LouisFoglia
      @LouisFoglia 6 років тому +1

      I agree that having a credible, unassailable spokesperson makes persuasion easier.

    • @ChuffedChap
      @ChuffedChap 6 років тому +2

      That’s the entire trap the video is discussing - you need to separate the spokesperson from the underlying issue, or else you’ll likely not engage with discussion productively.
      With Decaprio and Al Gore, their behaviour might make their message harder to swallow, but it doesn’t change the fact climate change is still an issue.
      It’s a matter of spin too, I saw another comment which framed Al Gore’s large carbon footprint as demonstrative to the fact that even with such a passion for environmental issues, it’s still hard to reduce your individual carbon footprint. You might think that’s a load of rubbish. But the point is that it’s besides the point, engage with the issue instead of the messenger, it might be hard sometimes, but we should push past it for more productive conversation :)

    • @maxafc4695
      @maxafc4695 6 років тому

      Daniel yeah I agree, it is about seeing what the actual issue is. It does make it harder to take on board what the people preaching that message are saying if they appear to contradict themselves though.

    I agree that hypocrisy does not contribute to the discussion when discussing substantive issues. The way it can come into play, usefully I would argue, is during elections. If someone trying to get elected says something and their actions belie their stance on an issue, you cannot be assured that they're going to follow through on what they're saying.
    Take Hillary Clinton talking about income inequality, raising minimum wage, closing tax loopholes, etc. How does that square with taking money for speaking engagements or campaign donations from large financial organizations? Which aspect of her are we to believe? Friend to the middle class or to financial institutions?
    In an election, you're trying to sell yourself. If you're a hypocrite, you make it a lot harder.

    • @LouisFoglia
      @LouisFoglia 6 років тому

      I agree - when you're evaluating someone's character and whether or not they should be entrusted with an elected office, credibility plays an important role.
