Hi Bruce, watched this last night and this morning took apart my mower. It is a different brand but the exact same B&S 675 engine and also what seemed to be the same issue. Hey Bruce! Help! I gave a craftsman platinum 7.25 190cc mower that wont flippin start. It tries to start but sort if sputters then nothing. I get a bit of gray/white smoke from the exhaust and a bit of a pop from the carb. First I would spray gas or carb cleaner right into the spark plug hole the put the plug back in. if it runs for 2 seconds things look good. Did you check the flywheel key. Yes that really happens not just in my videos. Did it hit something hard??/
@@BrucesShop Thanks Bruce! I did hit the carb with a blast of gas which is when I witnessed the smoke and feeble attempt to start. I verified spark with a tester and the flywheel key is fine. However, after reassembly from checking the key the mower did start but never got to full throttle and shut down. I'll verify the compression level in a day or two and I also had someone else suggest the intake air tube might be broken or restricted?

I also have to go with Zippo on the Ultrasonic cleaner here Bruce I would also check to see if those screws being so tight may have damaged something that may cause a problem. Good luck. Paul
The very first thing that I check is the compression. I crank the engine over by pulling the rope slowly to feel for slight resistance when the piston comes up on the compression stroke. Because if it has a broken rod, then that's another story. But if the compression feels adequate, then I check the condition of the spark with a fixed-gap spark tester (not an inline spark tester). If it produces a strong spark, then I test the spark plug that came with the engine for a strong spark as well. If it has a strong spark at the spark plug's tip, then I check the flywheel key to see if it's not sheared. If it's in good condition, then I move on to the carburetor. I remove the float bowl to see if there's any dirt or water in the gas, & I smell the gas for freshness. I also check the carburetor mounting & intake tube to make sure it's fastened tight to the engine block to prevent a vacuum leak. If any of these things are at fault, then I correct it. I do all of these things in this order on every customer's lawn mower that comes in my shop to rule out all possibilities. Because working in reverse gets very little done. And I have never used starting fluid (ether) on any engine that comes in my shop for repairs. Because I figure if an engine will not start on gas that's in the carburetor, then it will not start at all.
My first step is always checking the oil, many times it just barely touches the end of the dip stick. That also tells me if the carb float has or hasn't stuck loading the sump with gas. A sheared crank key will alway pull the rope handle out of your hand while pulling to start ( sometimes it's painful ). Nine out of 10 times the customer has put in a new spark plug already. I always tell them to bring their gas can so I can check for water and dirt, ( sometimes they don't even have a cap on the gas can and they kept it outside ) and the gas can is in very poor shape. I keep a good supply of two gallon gas cans around to save them from going out to buy one, and making me a few more dollars profit . Sometimes the condition and size of the can tells a good story . So, with this all said, about 90% of my repairs are fuel related. Then it's easier to up sell a blade or a blade sharpening or a pull rope replacement or a complete preventive maintenance service. You can always tell by the shape of ones mower and gas can if they are or will be willing to spend more to make it right.
Yes at my age the best mowers are non wheel drive (regular push). BUT now that I am ageing I do understand the self propel mowers are good EXCEPT they are too heavy for the own good.

Bruce, I have to wonder if the previous mechanic over-tightened the 1/2" main jet and literally screwed it in so far in that it cut off fuel from the two cross-ways holes at the bottom of the brass bolt. What do you think?
After living in central Wisconsin for most of my life, I have always had summer maintenance for winter machines and winter maintenance for summer machines. Then there is the bi-annual maintenance for the standyby machines. I learned the hard way that before I go and invest even 10 minutes of labor in a unit that simply won't start, I turn to the gods of Sea Foam and let them have a go at it. I have NEVER been sorry. I have even been known to add a little to the oil of the Winter machines for the summer maintenance. Mea culpa.
Hey Bruce, Love the channel. I’m a younger man, but really inspired to work on my own equipment confidently after watching your videos. One quick question, what is your preferred oil for a 50:1 mix?
We didn't view those as acts of violence. We viewed it as entertainment. We had sense enough to know it was a dang TV program. Now we have a whole new generation that don't know their a$$ from a hole in the ground. Next a generation of snotty nosed brats that have no upbringing, and think they know everything. Thanks for the video.
I was wincing when you were taking the 5/16 screw out. I was getting ready to watch the head of it to snap off. Can’t wait to see the next video. I’m curious to see what the diagnosis is.
Interesting repair. It sure looked and sounded like a dirty carb. BTW, have you tried the black, 'Grease Monkey' gloves from Princess Auto? I gave up on the blue ones and went to the black ones. Heavier and last a lot longer. Just as much dexterity and survive chemicals a lot better too. Just saying. Looking forward to the next episode to see what ails this puppy!!!
This is my second try at this reply. I am going to switch to them but I have 2 boxes of the blues ones. I think they are not made as well as they used to be.
You might think on wearing nitrile gloves when using carb cleaner, or any other chemical for that matter. That stuff goes right to the liver through your most largest organ, your skin.
I see you put them on after the fact.. It can also cause contact dermatitis, not good, as it draws all the oils out of the skin. Of course you probably all ready know this.
Hope you are doing OK, It's the next day in the afternoon and part 2 is not here yet. You probably pumped on that lawnmower cart one too many times :) Seriously, hope everything is alright with you.

Bruce i don't know if it's possible but could you arrange the camera so we could see how you repair things, i'm just learning small engine repair and your back is quite often to the camera, can't always see how you do things, Thank You
I will but you have to promise me you will make a video of yourself working on something. Just for fun.
Did the nice customer who thought it would be a good idea to put thread-lock on the bolts, also fit a fuel filter? That could do it.
Could be.
Bruce, I have to wonder if the previous mechanic over-tightened the 1/2" main jet and literally screwed it in so far in that it cut off fuel from the two cross-ways holes at the bottom of the brass bolt.
What do you think?
I don't know of course. It could be. That choke was out of alignment but it should have still run.. You have a good point.
The bolts are Metric. As a Canadian you should know that.
I always use a impact gun on them bolts
I couldn't get it to grab.
@@BrucesShop when you go to put it back on there put a thin lock washer
Too late but good idea.
@@BrucesShop and the next project will be a lot easier if you use a impact gun with lock washers
Looks like threadlocker
I think so to
After living in central Wisconsin for most of my life, I have always had summer maintenance for winter machines and winter maintenance for summer machines. Mea culpa.
Thanks John
Hey Bruce, Love the channel. I’m a younger man, but really inspired to work on my own equipment confidently after watching your videos. One quick question, what is your preferred oil for a 50:1 mix?
Stihl.
any relation to A. D. Pender?
I don't think so.
working on a similar problem now, same mower - thanks for having these videos up here ... do you know the model carb that's on yours? thanks
Sorry this one is gone but the side draft Briggs is very common.
It’s a 799866. I have the same mower.
You may have answered this before, but may I ask where you bought your lift?
Here is a video. It is getting to be a bit older now.

Bruce how come you didn't use your new ultrasonic cleaner?
I am stuck in my old ways. I thought it would be a "Quick one"
please use a fan and see what that cleaner did to your glove, imagine what its doing in your pores.don't want cancer.
I know. I am trying to remember but them I get going ARGH!!!
Right, And it will be hard to get them to show up to work.
I surprised the threads didn't strip out in the mower... Glad you got them out ok
Me too. It was really close.
I was wincing when you were taking the 5/16 screw out. I was getting ready to watch the head of it to snap off. Can’t wait to see the next video. I’m curious to see what the diagnosis is.
Tomorrow.
@@toddolson573 I understand but then i get into the job and forget. thanks for the reminder.
👍
Thanks
Hope you are doing OK, It's the next day in the afternoon and part 2 is not here yet. You probably pumped on that lawnmower cart one too many times :) Seriously, hope everything is alright with you.
