Fantastic! Best performance of the Pastorale i've ever heard. Not since Harnoncourt I've heard a performance so deeply rooted in Austrian folk music tradition.

What a lovely performance! Maestro Honeck keeps things moving a nice clip and the final allegretto is absolutely superb.

Hard to say it, but yes the pastoral is my favourite among the Beethoven symphonies and Mr Honeck one of the Best. Congrats to him and to the great orchestra.

Magistral concierto de esta prestigiosa orquesta sinfónica alemana con sede en Colonia dirigida por el maestro austriaco Manfred Honeck interpretando la Sexta Sinfonia apodada "Pastoral" compuesta por el genial compositor Ludwig van Beethoven sin ninguna duda el más importante de toda la historia musical. Cuando se unen tres aspectos fundamentales como son una maravillosa obra, una excelente orquesta y un gran director el resultado final no puede ser otro que una auténtica JOYA para deleite de nuestros oídos. BRAVO !!!!. Saludos desde España.
Honeck hoy por hoy está en el top 3 de mejores directores de orquesta. Entiende y reinterpreta a Beethoven como nunca antes lo había oído.

Die Pastorale war vor 50 Jahren die erste Beethoven-Symphonie, die ich auf dem Plattenspieler meiner Eltern lieben lernte und seither so oft hörte, aber noch nie so freudvoll und begeistert wie in dieser Aufführung. Danke dafür, dass Ihr mich so überrascht habt. Wäre der Saal voll gewesen, hätte das Publikum auch im Konzertsaal beim Schlussapplaus wohl alle Reserviertheit fahren lassen und vor Freude "mitgetobt" wie im dritten Satz.

La symphonie dite « Pastorale » Op. 68, est une œuvre dévolue à la souplesse mélodique et à la pure beauté poétique, elle s’adonne
à la rêverie contemplative par le souvenir. Le musicien voyant son audition s'altérer peu à peu au fil du temps ne peut plus entendre vraiment la flûte des bergers ni le chant des oiseaux, se délaisse dans un repos idyllique à la campagne et la nature. Ici, se relayent
de fructueux thèmes qui déploient les uns après les autres leur tranquille beauté, et ceci va de pair avec un retentissant musical où prédominent les demi-teintes, les nuances délicates. L'adoption des instruments se restreint, l’écriture en est fine, déliée. L’apparition de la petite flûte, des timbales est fugitive, et les trombones seront utilisés plus comme un discret raffermissement harmonique que comme puissances sonores. Les cordes dominent, les bois sont traités en mixtures raffinées, ou individuellement, en solistes. La clarinette et hautbois retrouvent leur caractère pastoral, le basson son humour. Le passage le plus descriptif de la symphonie, imite différents chants d’oiseaux. La flûte évoque le rossignol, auquel répondent le hautbois dans le rôle de la caille, et la clarinette dans celui du coucou. Autre différence notoire, sans craindre de s’épancher dans la durée, Beethoven a construit cette partition en cinq mouvements dont les trois derniers sont enchaînés, et surtout leur a donné des titres qui en indiquent précisément la teneur répartie en cinq chapitres. Cette composition se développe dans un style à programme aussi explicite, qui rend quasiment superflu tout commentaire détaillé, tant titre et musique, pour chaque mouvement, se rejoignent dans l’imagination de l’auditeur. Il faut toutefois souligner qu'hormis quelques rares passages ouvertement descriptifs comme l’évocation des oiseaux, du tonnerre et des éclairs, l’œuvre, selon les termes mêmes de Beethoven, se veut plus expression du sentiment que peinture. À chacun de s’abandonner à sa propre rêverie contemplative à l’écoute de cette grande échappée poétique. D’ailleurs, le musicien le prescrivait déjà en disant : « Laissons à l’auditeur le soin de s’orienter… Tout spectacle perd à vouloir être reproduit fidèlement dans une composition musicale ». Cette symphonie est un chef-d’œuvre d’une bouleversante beauté qu’on écoute toujours avec une certaine émotion et dont on ne se lasse jamais. Œuvre romantique, la « Pastorale » est un sentiment fort de la sensibilité du maître allemand, un hymne à la Nature qui chantonne en toute allégresse. *Lucien*

I prefer the more strolling pace of Bohm in the first movement but what a brilliant and to the manner born performance. I have had the good fortune to watch Honeck live three times and I think he is one of the most elite conductors today and the best conductor active of the Austro-German school. Many thanks for this deeply appreciated post.

Manfred Honeck is Austrian. But he was surprised because he was faster than Von Karajan. However, he focuses on melody and is similar to Claudio Abbado's conducting. And surprised to hear the sound of footsteps during the Austrian peasant dance in the middle of the third movement. Also surprised to see that the last movement, Allegretto, was performed in a traditional German-Austrian style.
What a wonderful performance! Maestro Honeck is simply one of top three conductors currently active. I expect he will be at the helm of world top-class orchestras such as Amsterdam Concertgebouw and Chicago symphony soon.

@@etucker82 Thanks for your reply! Just in my personal opinion, the other two are Kirill Petrenko and Andris Nelsons. I prefer late-romantic interpretations by great maestros such as Herbert von Karajan, Gunter Wand and Sergiu Celibidache.
agree I hope gets either and even better if both. I do think he would be a perfect fit for the Concertgebouw.
@@djkim4681 I would go with Ivan Fischer or Markus Stenz, even Simon Rattle, over Nelsons but I'm entirely with you on the other two.

Was ist der Sinn des Lebens? Man kann ihn nicht ergründen. Aber wer Beethovens Pastorale hören durfte, kommt der Antwort schon sehr nahe.
Wer die Pastorale in seinem Leben hören durfte, hat nicht vergebens gelebt. Die Pastorale ist mehr wert, als all der schnöde Tand, hinter dem die Menschen herjagen.
Great Performance! But Timpani should play ff not fff at 27:06, so overall to much emphasis on the timpani, to be objective but i like it somehow. Also not together at 28:08!

Maybe you should look at Beethoven's Metronome Markings again. Personally I find all interpretations that deviate to more than 20% below them horrible. The 8th Symphony for example suffers horribly if Beethoven's tempi are not met. It loses all the cheekiness and sarcasm it has when taken too slow.
