    Before buying a freeze dryer, perhaps research to find out more about the downside of the machine; some people have problems with their machine and it's big and heavy and hard to return!
    When trying to decide what to freeze dry you can start by asking why.
    Start by asking yourself this question. Why are you freeze drying food? Knowing this should help you decide what you should freeze dry first.
    I'm freeze drying because:
    Just to freeze dry leftovers?
    You want to make your own food for camping/backpacking?
    For if/when the SHTF?
    For a short term emergency?
    You have your own garden and want to freeze dry the food?
    You love Costco but don't have a family of 6?
    You are good at finding the food sales but only have 1 freezer?
    When you cook homemade chili just for yourself you make 10 gallons? Because you have 3 full freezers and are worried about power outages?
    If I knew then what I know now, I would have freeze dried things in a different order. Or maybe not, because I started freeze drying because we had 3 full freezers, I was thinking of getting another one, and I decided I should buy a walk-in freezer instead. I started looking into walk-ins and realized they were expensive to buy (even used ones) AND expensive to own and operate. Then I found out Harvest Right was making home sized freeze dryers. One of my first thoughts was "I like Mountain House!" I have used their food for backpacking almost 45 years and we even kept some in our travel trailer, for just in case.
    Freeze dried food will stay fresh for many years and be ready and waiting when you need it.
    We do videos showing how we are using our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer to freeze dry food for long term storage. (We have the medium size machine that we got in August of 2017) We talk about how to load and unload the freeze dryer, how to know if the food is dry, is it better to freeze dry raw food or cooked food, and do a few taste tests. Freeze dried food is also great for prepping or just for camping and snacking!

    I use those brushes for home brewing. If you 'spin' the long brush while going from pushing to pulling you shouldn't get that stuck feeling.

      If your faucet is like mine the valve itself may not be bad, it may just be a clog. You may just need to remove the valve and clean the inlet. Usually the valve doesn't need to be replaced unless it's leaking and won't turn off. (Or is sticking when you turn it on and off. That's what mine was doing)
      Ours is a Hansgrohe brand faucet that we got at Costco a long time ago. We got the replacement part from Amazon www.amazon.com/dp/B0017VFUO2
      It's also possible the your cold water line from the shutoff valve up to the faucet is where the clog is. That's where mine was.
      Change an M2 M3 Cartridge ua-cam.com/video/yuMqVFD5Akw/v-deo.htmlsi=XlKAuP16RaCiUNks
      If yours is the same (or very similar) as mine and this isn't enough to help, I could video what I did to clean out the clog in mine, especially if you find out the valve is not your problem.

    I am having trouble with my valve getting hard to turn. I looked to order a new one from harvest right but they don't have them, they have some kind of new set up. have you by chance seen that and what do you think,, also can I just buy a regular valve at the hardware store maybe.

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  9 місяців тому

      They are just regular valves, nothing really special. (hardware store, Amazon, Granger, Ebay, etc) I haven't had to replace mine yet but I would just go to our local hardware store or Amazon. You could even just put a rubber stopper in the end of the hose! The maximum pressure they have to deal with is only about 15psi.
      I suppose you could also dissemble the valve and lube it with Dow Corning High Vacuum Grease Lubricant. (The lube might cost more then a valve!)
      I can show you a picture of my valve if you need it to see the markings. My old valve has these markings on it. I could not see any markings on my sister's valve, but it looks the same.

      By any chance is the one you ordered called "Pressure Release Valve?" If it is, it doesn't replace the drain valve it's a separate valve for letting the air back in but you still need to open the drain valve when it comes time to drain the chamber. It's a great looking valve and I may consider getting one at some time.

    Please do a review of scales, I trust your recommendations. I know you are busy but I am buying different brands of scales and find them to be less than reliable sometimes. I wish Harvest Right sold scales.

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  9 місяців тому

      I'll try to do something about scales.
      These are the scales we use all the time. The silver one in most videos is this one. Escali Primo Kitchen Scale amzn.to/3r8VqRe It's almost 12 years old and the first 6 years of life it's were spent in our kitchen. When we started using it for freeze drying all the time, we replaced it with another one of the same model, except blue. We've been very happy with them. But that wasn't your question. I think because of it's accuracy, durability, (at least for us), and price, I would still recommend it.
      The other scale (the red one) I use a lot for bagging is this one: Etekcity Kitchen Scale11lb/5kg amzn.to/3K3ajhY I really like that it goes to 1/10s of a gram increments for bagging, but for weight the whole trays it seems a bit too sensitive. The slightest breeze on a tray sized item will change the weight by grams.
      I don't know if these are the best ones (probably not:), but it's what we've been using for years and they've worked for us so we never looked into buying others. Maybe people could tell us which scales they use and why.

    I love your videos and am so very glad I found you. You have so many awesome tips and tricks. I am going to be cleaning the valve hose tomorrow, but I have a question about a possible problem I have regarding the valve release. For some reason when I opened the valve to release the pressure, it did not release. Have you ever had that problem and if you did, what did you do to solve it?

    • @SchoolReports
      @SchoolReports  6 місяців тому +1

      Thanks so much!
      If the valve didn't open, at least a little to let some air in, how did you open the door?
      It sounds like maybe the valve stem may have stripped or broken.
      I'm going to be (finally:) taking apart my sister's machine's drain valve tomorrow because it is failing. It has been getting stiffer to turn and now it's not sealing all the way.

      @SchoolReports I was able to pour hot water down the valve hose with no blockage, which brings me to agree that the valve stem may have stripped or broke. I am just not sure how that would have happened. However, the problem occurred less than 24 hours after I did an oil change on the vacuum pump, so I am wondering if the two are connected.

      @@berniescree8ions119 I took my sister's valve apart to clean yesterday and found it was so badly pitted/corroded it wasn't cleanable, it had to be replace. Hers is only about 1 1/2 years old. She has run a couple batches just using a rubber stopper in the end of the hose. Worked great. The hose with a stopper might be better than the valve. 😁 Easy and pretty much leak-proof.
      I'm going to have to really look at the valve on my machine. It's over 6 1/2 years old and hasn't failed yet. I like to know why. (Or why not?)
      I'll put up the video showing taking her valve apart as soon as I can, but you will probably be able to see if the ball is pitted or not, and therefore if it can be cleaned or needs to be replaced. (Or use a rubber stopper)
      Oil changes should have nothing to do with the drain valve in any way.
