    The pendulum in the Metropolitan Cathedral of CDMX indeed keeps a record of the cathedral's position and movements over the years. The plaque in the floor has dates that mark how the cathedral has moved over the years. This also helps the engineers observe the behavior of the building for the implementation of foundation works that have been done in the past to keep it upright.

    • @limbosvi6983
      @limbosvi6983 7 років тому +2

      Another fun fact is that El Castillo de Chapultepec (Chapultepec Castle) is the only royalty castle in the whole American continent ever built and the park grounds is twice the size of Central Park in NYC.

    • @TheWayWeSawIt
      @TheWayWeSawIt  7 років тому +2

      Thank you very much for your comment. Indeed, it is an impressive work of engineering to keep track of the movements of the building. I hope last nights earthquake did not move the building much.

    Correction guys, we do eat lots of different insects in Mexico but NEVER cockroaches. Also what you were eating in the upscale restaurant looks like what we call "Mole" which is a sauce made of at least 5 different types of chilies, chocolate, brown sugar, cinammon, almonds, peanuts, corn, raisins, tomatoes, garlic, sesame seeds, etc. etc. etc. A very elaborate and time consuming dish to prepare and something invented by the indigenous people from Puebla a state south east of Mexico City and not bean sauce.

    • @TheWayWeSawIt
      @TheWayWeSawIt  7 років тому +4

      Thank you for your comment. We could not imagine either that you eat cockroaches and you were right, in the upmarket restaurant, it was a "Mole" dish, which we enjoyed a lot. The restaurant was the Azul Historico in the Downtown complex.

    what a great video! i'm now checking your channel! it's a shame Zocalo it's closed because of the remodelation, it's a quite big area and have a great views of cathedral and national palace. And the monument down the Castle it's a monument to the defenders of the nation from the mexican american war, because Chapultepec was the last big battle before we lost the war. Hope you had a great time here!

    In regard with the plumb in the center of the Cathedral, it is marking the subsidence that the church suffered from the beginning of its construction untill the years 80's in the last century when the Cathedral had suffered the maximum sinking because the weight of it and the unstable subsoil where it was built and the plumb also marks the recovered balance by the church after the stabilization works were made.

    • @RodrigoSahagun
      @RodrigoSahagun 7 років тому +1

      Surely not, in fact the earthquake in the city was very soft and this is because Mexico City is far from the place of the earthquake's epicenter I think 1000 km from the city.

    Hello, nice video. The pendulum in the cathedral in the zocalo is to help measure how much the building has moved (so I have been told). Not sure exactly how it works, but it has a lot to do with what you were explaining regarding the city "sinking" into the ground which causes the buildings to become distorted. Thanks for sharing.

      Philip Casso Its about floor is deeping down because remember old Tenochtitlan was build over a lake, then Cathedral is losing its horizontal level, you can see how floor is moving about its original vertical line, now its not perfect vertical anymore ..

      +Daniel Aguayo Hello Daniel, thank you for your comment. Our channel "The Way We Saw It" is a travel vlog where we post once to twice a week (depending on the internet access) reviews on the places we visit as seen through our eyes, independently without sponsoring. Once in a while, we try to make different videos on the real life of the places we visit. Have a look at our latest, it is more about the people than the destination. Greetings from Mexico City, hope all is well with you.

    That was an interesting fact about Maximilian having an affair with the gardener's daughter and having an offspring from it! One of my ancestors Luis Blasio was Maximilian's Secretary from the beginning till the end of his kingdom, he wrote an interesting book "Maximiliano Íntimo" here is a link en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Luis_Blasio just in case you guys want to read about it, also I wanted to be clear that I wasn't bragging about being related to him!

    • @TheWayWeSawIt
      @TheWayWeSawIt  7 років тому +3

      +Krishnakumar Kalaiarasan Thank you for your comment, greatly appreciated. Mexico City is like all Latin American cities, if you stay at the "safe" areas and avoid certain areas, you are perfectly safe. In none of these cities we felt threatened at any moment. You need to keep your valuables hidden and melt in as much as possible. Mexico City has a lot of demonstrative police presence in tourist spots as they know the value of tourism, this adds to the security feeling.

      Sorry if I was rude, Chapultepec castle was built during the colonial era by one of the viceroys as a private property, but the viceroy died soon after.
      the castle then was then used as a residence by Maximilian, an emperor some Mexicans hate and some others admire.
