  • Nissan Qashqai Review: A Better-Looking Crossover That Still Plays It Safe
The Nissan Qashqai has been a stalwart of the compact crossover segment for years, blending ease of use with a healthy dollop of style. For 2024,
Nissan gives its bread-and-butter crossover a comprehensive overhaul inside and out, but does the new Qashqai go far enough to stay ahead of an increasingly crowded pack?
    Cutting A Sharp Figure
There's no mistaking the new Qashqai for anything else on the road. Nissan's crossover wears a bold new face with a massive V-motion grille, slashing LED headlights, and an aggressive front bumper treatment. Along the sides, bulging fenders and sharp creases give the Qashqai a sportier stance than before. At the rear, the overhauled taillights blend seamlessly into the liftgate and a skid plate-inspired rear bumper lower section.
While not quite as expressive as alternatives like the Hyundai Tucson or Volkswagen Tiguan, the 2024 Qashqai carves out a distinct design identity for itself in this ultra-competitive segment. If you want even more curb appeal, the range-topping Tekna+ trim wears larger 20-inch wheels that fill out the swollen fenders nicely.
    Hit Or Miss Interior?
Step inside and the Qashqai's cabin is a bit of a mixed bag. There's plenty of nice materials and solid build quality, especially in the higher trim levels that gain soft-touch surfaces and leather upholstery. However, the dashboard design feels a bit too familiar and safe compared to the sheetmetal outside. At least Nissan's latest infotainment system is easy-to-use and responsive.
The Qashqai's roomy back seat and a generous 503-liter cargo area are the star of the cabin show. Those needing more space can look to alternatives like the Tiguan and its massive 615L boot. But for most compact crossover buyers, the Qashqai will likely have ample room for their everyday gear.
Hit The Road, But Not Too Hard
As with most vehicles of this ilk, the Qashqai is tuned more for comfort than outright performance. Even with the punchy 188-horsepower e-Power hybrid setup, there's not much excitement to be had from behind the wheel. The upside is that the Qashqai's light steering, smooth ride, and quiet cabin make it an excellent long-distance cruiser.
Those who do enjoy a twistier back road every now and then will want to look elsewhere, as the Qashqai has a fair amount of body roll and its chassis never really encourages spirited driving. For most customers just looking for an easy day-to-day runabout, though, the Nissan is just fine.
    Playing It Conservative Pays Off?
The 2024 Nissan Qashqai makes a number of improvements over its predecessor, but doesn't venture too far out of its comfort zone. The crossover's daring new sheetmetal is by far its most head-turning attribute, while the comfortable interior, efficient powertrain options, and typical Nissan practicality help make a strong overall package.
It may not be the most exciting choice, but the Qashqai covers all the compact crossover bases quite well. For many buyers, that's more than enough to keep Nissan's redesigned crossover at the front of their consideration lists.
