No, not necessarily.

Look up “rotafix” on how to remove a difficult cog. After breaking 2 chain whips, this technique saved the day.

I couldn’t even get my cog off with rotafix. It was the wheel that came with my bike so it’s nothing spectacular. Gonna do a custom wheel set soon anyway.

It's a specific tool to remove a lock ring. You can buy them in bike shops and online.
