As a child I remember seeing the keramat which I thought was a mosque back in the early 70s. We were travelling in a car driven by my brother to visit my late mother’s friend who was living in the warden quarters complex in Jalan Awan. We were travelling from Geylang Serai by Old Upper Changi Road where the drive passed through some rural villages and leafy area travelling up and down the hill. It was indeed an exciting ride to see villages and sand quarries along the way. In late 1979 we moved to Chai Chee Street and we read from Berita Harian that the tomb complex will be demolished and relocated due to redevelopment project. My sister was working at the Rollei factory while waiting for her ‘O’ levels result and her work area has a good view window of the keramat. They saw the demolition works and also heard about some difficulties the demolition team faced while going about their work.
My parents do have recollection of this place too bro Ayob. I do not remember seeing this place. Yes its behind the old Rollei factory and today Decathlon. So they do have difficulties in demolishing the place ya.
although it is now not favourable to have karamat... it was very sad to see how draconian the Singapore government could destroy cultural and Muslim religious sites with such impunity
Yes i totally agree with you bro. These are worthwhile heritage sites that ought to be preserved. Or at least be mentioned in text books to tell people the multicultural society of our nation's past.
