I've known a few people who love to swing the hammer of truth, but do so out of arrogance or even revenge. All they've accomplished is to isolate themselves and break relationships, even though their words were generally correct. They end up looking like jerks, even to people on their own side. Sometimes you're not given a lot of options, but every situation is different, every person is different, and I think true wisdom is in assessing the situation and figuring out a response that will cause people to listen and think. Sometimes the hammer will do that - but more often (at least in my experience), it just heightens emotions and makes things worse.
