Alex is my favourite street fighter character of all time, high risk high reward. I feel like he has so many different moves that people just forget he has all of these weird ass mix ups. Stomp, jump dive into grab, crouch heavy into knee drop EX in the corner. Also ddt catches so many people off guard.
Another thing about Chun-Li's Super art II, it also is a really good punish tool! The fact that you can get punished for just about anything that isn't blocking when she has meter is stupid terrifying
Dont forget that hugos has an invisible timer counting down 30 frames over and over. When it runs out, it dumps all inputs related to SPD and so about 5 to 30% of the time depending on how fast you do the input, it will run out and make your spd input drop!
@@ryler7 yes. An invisible timer determines if the move will be registered or not. You can do a fast 4 frame spd and if the timer ran out during that window, tough luck. No spd. Its actually a pretty huge deal. Check out demonstrations on youtube.
@@ryler7 I dropped him because of this. Whiffed spd can swing matches (and also because hes not good, and because geneijin is giga degenerate and unfun to fight)
Chun's super is also kinda fucked up because the camera follows her opponent when they get launched, meaning she can prepare off-screen mixups for when they land.
I dislike the SF goofy characters immensely except Dan and Rolento, but I dislike the SF3 ones more than 4s (Rufus, Hugo, El Fuerte, Hakan) and 5s (Abigail, Fat Birdie, FANG, to a lesser extent G). In this, Necro, Hugo, 12, Oro, and to a lesser extent Q are just no thanks. And Remy looks like a KOF character - waltzed into the wrong game.
Denjin Hadoken is good, but it can struggle against characters with high stun. Dudley I've seen has been a problem character for Ryu players because he takes just a bit more to stun so he doesn't really fear the Denjin mixup as much as others, and if he doesn't get stunned then he gets to punish Ryu on hit if he's close. I think in those matchups, Ryu should be using SA1 for the EX donkey kick and hit confirm into super.
I do think that Q is a little underrated because he isn't good in the traditional sense outside of his supers which are quality supers. He's about as good as Elena imo due to his high hp, throw bug (crouch to standing or standing to crouching (I forget the specifics) puts his throw box in the air), good strike throw with the longest reaching command grab in the game that leads to a combo + defense boosting taunt, some high/low from mid screen with rush punch overheads and lows, and his presence from full screen with his defense taunt (even Chun Li players are scared of this before they build super) and the universal parry. He just has too much damage, a great taunt, and many mediocre tools that cover his weaknesses to an extent to be low tier.
But for me this makes the characters thay have it very annoying to fight, also because the of the lack of anti zoning tools outside of parrying(Except Remy, Urien or Oro, incredibly I never or rarely saw them using them)
I think a bit less than half of the cast have at least a small projectile (granted, Chun-li's or Oro for example is a very minor part of their movelist). It's just that with the parry, spamming fireball isn't a good idea.
@@MegafanX123Because they’re low-key kind of ass if that’s what you consider an anti-zoning tool, realistically who’s using CBK, chicken kicks or knee drops to punish fireballs?
@@MegafanX123 alex stomp, dudley duck, yang rollkick, 12 airdashes, akuma tp / demon flip, sean roll, ibuki hien and kubiori, hugo's claps eat fireballs while letting him get meter. There are more characters with answers to fireballs than without.
A jumping Ibuki is hard for Chun to stop. Her air chains and hops over throw attempts and her air kunai and faking the kunai and her mixups in general, IF done well, are hard for most characters to handle.
Didnt mean to watch the whole thing in one go but once started I just couldnt turn it off! You have a really good presentation style. I get destroyed with Alex but I still love playing him. But maybe for my own sanity I'll invest in one of these high tier chars.
It would be funny if now that there’s so many new players playing 3rd strike because of Evo. That the meta was shifted and new top tiers were discovered.
I think people give a lot more respect to Ryu and Dudley as of late. Yomoda and Kuni both narrowly missed Top 6 winners at EVO JP and on the NA side Exodus won jazzy circuit and Bubbles won combo breaker.
Alex reasoning could be improved. No big damage off of lows, has command grab to compensate but it’s really not rewarding. Only lp version gives you oki. His other moves are reactable in a lot of cases. His combos are ok, even though he doesn’t have many. Ex move Enders do great damage and corner carry. And the super sa2 is alright, just don’t use it from long range. It’s obvious the range not to use it from. Cr Lk x 2 doesn’t work, just one lk. He has a harder confirm with cl mk and an easier one with any elbow or a jump in
Alex's big issue is that he doesn't have anything substantial about his kit. All of it is subpar or has problems/is inconsistent. He also doesn't make good use of meter in general. He has one really good EX move, but all of his Supers are bad, hard to link and are reactable.
@@leithaziz2716 he has simple dice roll gameplay, if you guess right on offence his high stun damage can kill you so fast though! No safe pressure iron clad strategy gameplay model, he’s for Spartan players lol. I love it. His long range normals are good for zoning though.
I've been an unapologetic Hugo main for well over a decade now. There's no way i could do better with any of the top tier characters. He's the most fun Grappler of any SF game imo. I love that slap catching short characters right in the face.
I dont know that much about 3S, but im wondering what the thought process is for putting Remi, a character that is almost never seen, in the same tier as Q, a difficult character with actual stenghts that we've seen do work at times. Maybe its my misconception and im missing something but im curious nonetheless.
3S is very bad balance wise. That said the parry system can throw everything in the mix. Ofcourse a player who picks a top tier & is ''on the zone'' with parries washes the competition.
Yeah, I agree it's a bit of a toss up. I think Chun Li might be a bit more straightforward or easier to play, with good normals, a nice damage and flexible super. Maybe a safer bet, with the reliability of the normals- that seem to usually lead to a super with meter. Obviously at high level, it's not so easy to play Chun against other masters. I think she has good fundamentals which make her strong.
limited antiairs and low health, low damage, no real "checkmate" situations like other top tiers can enforce. He has to win neutral many times to take a round, Chun or Yun have to win it twice. On most lists he's generally around 6th best with Dudley
You forgot to talk about a lot of Remy tools that (in my opinion) make him a playable character as well as Hugo - His HK kara throw that's nearly a teleport - His fast dashs - Corner combos - LOV gatling - 1 frame super - good anti-air (- His animation when he removes his jacket)
So, you mention towards the end of the video that Yun and Chun go pretty even. However, I've heard many people claim that Yun actually beats Chun pretty consistently, and I've also seen this represented in match-up charts for all the characters. I used to consider Chun the best character in 3s, but my friend once made a pretty compelling argument that Yun is, in fact, the #1 because of this one deciding factor. Yun beats Chun, and he beats everyone else. Chun loses to Yun, but she obliterates the rest of the cast even harder. According to a global match-up chart, Chun would appear to be the better pick. However, Yun winning against the most difficult match-up in the game (Chun) is a pretty compelling argument for him being the true #1. Many people would argue that (Yun) having universally good match-ups is more important than (Chun) being especially dominant in a handful of match-ups. In short, the argument goes: Yun has no losing match-ups, while Chun has one losing match-up (Yun). Therefore, Yun is the #1 character.
It's the opposite in high level play, if anything Chun beats Yun or it's an even matchup at best. She counters dive kicks really well, has good anti-GJ options (cr jab, kara throws), wins the neutral game, she can punish GJ activation from 2/3s of the screen with super. Yun also has relatively weak defense/hp which is a problem against Chun. The great advantage that Yun has over other chars is that he's the only one who can force her to be active because GJ charges up so quickly. But she can afford more mistakes than he can and as soon as she gets super the risk/reward ratio becomes too messy to try to pressure without GJ. They're both broken. That said, no one else fights her better than Yun which is why she's the best character in the game.
@@letsblocking Agreed. Yun does well but overal Chun is better and at least even or even plus vs Yun. The only characters that beats everyone is Gill. But he's not legal.
@@letsblocking Okay, it's only one tournament but why did Yun dominate Evo 2024 Japan if what you say is true? Is Evo 2024 Japan not high level because 3rd strike has been out of the competitive loop for a while? Anyways, lets see what happens in Evo 2024 America and other future tournaments.
I see Hugo shifting tiers a lot in tier lists, also first time I’ve seen Ryu that high You argue it’s SA3, well I would like to argue that red parry also helps Hugo a lot and is universal which could make him a higher tier, though the strengths of each mechanic and character depends on who’s using them
Chun Li's super is a win button. One of the most damaging, has two stocks, easy input, follow-up combo, whiff punishes from damn near full screen. The list goes on.
There is no character in any fighting game that gets downplayed as much as 3S Chun Li. She's a perfectly complete top tier right out of the box. No genei jin, no command grab, no aegis, no air fireball, and no execution is needed. The moment Chun is on screen, she's winning and the opponent is tense just because of basic old speed and range. Chun players see genei jin and immediately intuitively understand how strong it is, then question how anything could be better than it. In reality, Chun is permanently in the neutral game equivalent to genei jin lmao
as an ultra beginner i've been watching a fair amount of your 3rd strike videos to get familiar with what's what. they've been very helpful! been having the most fun with Elena at the moment
Elena has janky hitboxes. You have to study her moves in the lab to understand what actually punishes. Then again 3rd Strike is all over the place with the balance.
Maybe 3s has changes aince i used to watch regularly but dont most people use sa1 instead if denjin? His ex moves hit like a truck and they dont need setup like denjin does. Also since you wont have meter post denjin stun its not a guaranteed kill after.
Alex's main issue is that he's a light grap character with one good grab, so he has really mid specials in comparison to the shotos (because they're supposed to get him into a grab) so he has to work really hard and burn resources for the same results. He also has really mid supers with little stun threat. Meanwhile Chun Li is a light and fast character with great frame data, a microscopic hitbox and incredible damage with the second best super in the game and a HUGE stun bar.
Can you do a video for beginners on how to get into Third Strike? I notice you have some cool training version of the game and I know you can play it on FightCade but I don't know where to begin.
Makoto is my favorite, but I can't figure out how to convert from command throw + back and SP to super. Even if I do it extremely fast it just doesn't work.
Noob question: what sf3rd version is that? with training mode, frame data etc? I have mame and sf collection on steam but no option to turn on this hud...maybe fightcade+some script/mod? Thx
hf does have a fightcade training mode as well, though not as great as third strike's. supercombo is the wiki for street fighter games where you can find almost all framedata listed
As with all fighting games there is a bit of a skill tilt to some of the tier placements. Makoto isn't very good in unskilled hands. Yun is... fine, but again you need to be good to demonstrate the reasons he is top tier at top level. Chun on the other hand, she's top tier from beginner to pro no problem.
Could someone explain how health works in this game? It says everyone has 160 on the display. I know Q's taunt gives him defense and that pops up but I've also seen people say online that taunting gives health so I've always been confused.
Defense is a modifier that relates to how much damage you take when getting hit. So, higher defense=less damage taken from hits=more hits you can theoretically take, which is effectively more health if you wanna think about it that way. A lot of fighting games calculate damage/health this way. Like Strive does, for example.
@@jakesimpson3373 thanks! I never understood why some people referred to it as a health increase cause that's where the confusion came from. I thought I'd like see his health bar increase or he'd appear to heal if you used it at lower health back in the day lol
while technically that 160 bar is the same for everyone, all chars have a defensive modifier that changes the amount of damage you take. so, q doesn't really get more health, his defensive modifier is raised and the amount of damage he receives is lessened after each taunt ontop of that, 3s also has 'guts' values like guilty gear; when your health is lower, the amount of damage you take is reduced by an additional modifier. so, a combo while your health is full will do more damage than the *same combo* while your health is low. 'guts' modifiers are set per character
You kinda misrepresented Alex there by saying he has no combos. c.s.mp or c.s.mk will combo into LP/EX Flash Chop, which is quite decent, but it is strange that only HP/EX Flash Chop can be Super-canceled if you're trying to get that damage in off a j.hp or a ground punish/post parry. You can cancel Slash Elbow into supers too, which is... useful, I suppose, but this has the negative effect of tricking newbies into attempting it. MP/HP Flash Chop is good for mixups/mind games as either of them will set you up for either a close range combo, a command grab, and either SA1 and 2, and his SA3 is a free stun on any character regardless of anything, provided you know when and where how to use it. I'd also argue that using SA2 OR SA3 (my preference) is viable, but SA1 is just terrible because you can jump it every single time unless you're being punished or got set up. The biggest advantage Alex has is stun damage, so I'm baffled why you didn't mention that.... And there's a lot more that could be said, like HP being a solid overhead with priority that will trade with stuff like shoryukens, so it's something very useful against opponents on wakeup and invaluable for mixups. Honestly, I don't mind that you put him in C tier, I only wish you'd talked more about his advantages and gimmicks, because Alex is a pretty fun character to play!

I'd never thought of it that way, that's a good analogy!
And she has good instant air mixups too, they can even crossup.
Alex is my favourite street fighter character of all time, high risk high reward. I feel like he has so many different moves that people just forget he has all of these weird ass mix ups. Stomp, jump dive into grab, crouch heavy into knee drop EX in the corner. Also ddt catches so many people off guard.
Chun is the best all rounder but Yun can bully her like no other in the cast
Yeah being the only character with (permanent) V-ism combos will let you do that
Imagine Sean being decent, then trash, and then Luke shows with a large majority of his moves set and be really good...who knew lol?
They did intentionally gut him in third strike tbf
He was top tier in second impact
See above lol he was actually really good in 2I
i mean yeah, sean in 3s is an intentionally bad shoto and luke in sf5 and 6 is an intentionally good shoto, not that surprising
Sean was never a damn joke and honestly it's kind of fucked up that they stole a lot of his moves for Luke.
Meanwhile Yun and Yang litteraly got replaced by their fanboy ☠️
Another thing about Chun-Li's Super art II, it also is a really good punish tool! The fact that you can get punished for just about anything that isn't blocking when she has meter is stupid terrifying

Too much of shotos.
Just watched Hayao highlights from EVO 2024. Really funny hearing him talk about his standing fierce afterwards.
3S Ryu is my favourite iteration of his in the franchise no doubt
3S Ryu is awesome but I still have a fondness for 4 Ryu. Both are comeback machines.
Found it odd that JM didn't mention the Donkey Kick, giving Ryu the ability to keep being a zoning character much more reliably.
Dont forget that hugos has an invisible timer counting down 30 frames over and over. When it runs out, it dumps all inputs related to SPD
and so about 5 to 30% of the time depending on how fast you do the input, it will run out and make your spd input drop!
wait what??
@@ryler7 yes. An invisible timer determines if the move will be registered or not. You can do a fast 4 frame spd and if the timer ran out during that window, tough luck. No spd. Its actually a pretty huge deal. Check out demonstrations on youtube.

Fr. Also it can be used on Oki similar to chuns stand hk it beats throw. It js more of a knowledge check though
Agreed, SA1 is better against him
I do think that Q is a little underrated because he isn't good in the traditional sense outside of his supers which are quality supers.
We love to see a Ryu winning
#REAL!
What I love about third strike is that almost NO characters have fireballs. It’s mostly a closerange footsie game

A jumping Ibuki is hard for Chun to stop. Her air chains and hops over throw attempts and her air kunai and faking the kunai and her mixups in general, IF done well, are hard for most characters to handle.
It would be cool to see Remmy in sf6
Yang meta is gonna go crazy tbh
Typing this while the ad is playing because I like your channel and want to give you the engagement.
Alex is hulk hogan which means he’s on top brother
I've been an unapologetic Hugo main for well over a decade now. There's no way i could do better with any of the top tier characters. He's the most fun Grappler of any SF game imo. I love that slap catching short characters right in the face.
I dont know that much about 3S, but im wondering what the thought process is for putting Remi, a character that is almost never seen, in the same tier as Q, a difficult character with actual stenghts that we've seen do work at times. Maybe its my misconception and im missing something but im curious nonetheless.
Remy also has diehard specialists who perform well at tournaments. Check out footage of Pierrot
Nah, they're very different characters but they're about even on the tier list.
They're both in the same tier, the tier of "bad but has some great players in tournaments"
3S is very bad balance wise. That said the parry system can throw everything in the mix.
Ofcourse a player who picks a top tier & is ''on the zone'' with parries washes the competition.
As a Remy player.... yeah, just... yeah.
The Shotos would almost be absurdly strong in this game if not for the effectiveness of parrying.
Kinda new to Third Strike, why is Yang not A+ tier? He feels like he should be higher I don’t really see a weakness in his game at all
limited antiairs and low health, low damage, no real "checkmate" situations like other top tiers can enforce. He has to win neutral many times to take a round, Chun or Yun have to win it twice.
On most lists he's generally around 6th best with Dudley

Therefore, Yun is the #1 character.
the troll response is Chun players are so carried they think they lose an even matchup ;)
@@jmcrofts ...I'd believe that too, lol.

I see Hugo shifting tiers a lot in tier lists, also first time I’ve seen Ryu that high
You argue it’s SA3, well I would like to argue that red parry also helps Hugo a lot and is universal which could make him a higher tier, though the strengths of each mechanic and character depends on who’s using them
Chun Li's super is a win button.

BEATS IN MY HEAD
Good video, as a Remy/Necro, Twelve main for years I enjoy the challenge. Agree with your ranking placement especially top 4.
Elena is the hardest character to play against. I can’t tell what to do against her.
Elena has janky hitboxes. You have to study her moves in the lab to understand what actually punishes.
Then again 3rd Strike is all over the place with the balance.
Ryu, outside of Denjin, can do a lot of stun. Like I see Ryu players get stuns pretty often, which only makes him stronger.
Maybe 3s has changes aince i used to watch regularly but dont most people use sa1 instead if denjin? His ex moves hit like a truck and they dont need setup like denjin does. Also since you wont have meter post denjin stun its not a guaranteed kill after.
Yes the meta changed. Denjin setups have changed the way the character is played.

9:36 lol, this aged poorly
Could someone explain how health works in this game? It says everyone has 160 on the display. I know Q's taunt gives him defense and that pops up but I've also seen people say online that taunting gives health so I've always been confused.
Defense is a modifier that relates to how much damage you take when getting hit. So, higher defense=less damage taken from hits=more hits you can theoretically take, which is effectively more health if you wanna think about it that way. A lot of fighting games calculate damage/health this way. Like Strive does, for example.
It decreases the amount of damage he takes, not the actual amount of health he has, but it’s effectively the same thing
@@TheLivingShadow_ that makes a lot of sense thanks!
@@jakesimpson3373 thanks! I never understood why some people referred to it as a health increase cause that's where the confusion came from. I thought I'd like see his health bar increase or he'd appear to heal if you used it at lower health back in the day lol
while technically that 160 bar is the same for everyone, all chars have a defensive modifier that changes the amount of damage you take.
so, q doesn't really get more health, his defensive modifier is raised and the amount of damage he receives is lessened after each taunt
ontop of that, 3s also has 'guts' values like guilty gear; when your health is lower, the amount of damage you take is reduced by an additional modifier. so, a combo while your health is full will do more damage than the *same combo* while your health is low. 'guts' modifiers are set per character
9:35 yeah don't you ever use this kick if you're playing hugo there's no way it would ever win a match or something
So without yun super he’s not even good? Would he drop a lot in tier with out the super
Folks! You're a saint, JM. Thanks for doing what you do.
