- Wherever you live, you likely have an Elder growing nearby. Here in this video, Melissa Kanaris shares a quick intro on how to use both the flowers & the berries as medicine for the acute symptoms of colds & flus. While species vary from location to location, the majority of Elder have wonderful medicinal properties & are quite enjoyable as an edible berry WE CAUTION THAT YOU SHOULD NOT EAT RAW BERRIES They can be considered mildly toxic in larger quantities, so if you plan on really tasting elderberry medicine - that you find a recipe for them: syrups, tinctures, oxymels, wines, jams, pies & even delicious medicinal gummy treats are some different ideas.
Elderflowers can also be used in a few different ways & also make a great ally during the acute stages of colds & flus.

Does elderberry grow by your house, if so how do you use it?
I did not know it could grow in Florida. I use it, but I always order the dried berries and flowers. Do you sell cuttings of the plants? I would love to have one? Will it grow in Central Florida, though? I live in the Cocoa Beach area.

Gina Welds Hulse - They would grow great in Cocoa Beach region. We have 1 gallon plants available to ship. We'll get those up on the website/shopping cart in the next few days. Unfortunately, the elder would not do well shipped as cuttings - chances of success would be pretty low. Truly, you would need to plant the cutting in soil almost immediately for it to take root.

Elderberry grows wild all over my farm. I started selling the berries at the farmers market and they've become so popular that I recently bought some cultivars and I'll be selling those berries as well as propagating the plants to sell. I'm doing the same thing with Aronia berry. The market for any type of berry is really huge right now. I've sold nearly 5000 blueberry bushes so far this year.

Found 2 Elderberry bush on my property I kinda thought it was something good so I didn't chop it up too much but now I think I'll propagate it and properly fit it into the landscape

I like to eat broth with elder flowers sprinkled in liberally. Very like chicken with stars soup only so much better.

I have been giving my kids elderberry syrup this weekend to keep them from catching something one of their siblings came down with. I can't stand the taste (had some one time before I became very very sick and I threw it back up, I can't mange to swallow it anymore) but I insist on the kids taking it. We need to see more Mel!

I ordered an elderberry from you last season. I have it in a pot and plan to plant it in the ground. I was worried that it could not handle the Texas winters( zone 9A). Looks like that is not a concern. I can't wait for it to flower an give me berries.

High fever is 101°. 103° is get that temp down. Whether Tylenol or alcohol rub down or ice bath.
Nancy Fahey - Thanks for the input. I probably should have added extra detail about not letting high fever persist. Fevers can certainly be dangerous if high for too long. Plus, there are always exceptions- depending on the person's personal health picture. So many variables for sure. That's why I like the beauty of the elderflower-induced sweats - it cools the body by diffusing the high temps away from the head/core & out to the the periphery.
I will go to OTC meds when I must, but don't usually need to. ~Mel

We have so many here on this coast too, but I haven't been brave enough to do anything with it. Always afraid of mistaking the identity of a plant I plan to eat! lol
John Tamez - Just remember that Elder has umbel shaped clusters of flowers or berries (think umbrella shape). Opposite pinnate leaves. Find a local experienced forager to see the proper identification in person, just until you get to know the leaf patterns and can identify the clusters of berries. I know that both Andy Firk and Green Deane travel all over the state leading wild edible plant walks. I think most people are worried they're going to mix this one up with poke & to me they don't look similar at all, but if someone can help you identify each, you'll see the distinct differences. ~Mel :)

dale a Turner I'd suggest finding local elder in your area and digging it up. You can Remove all the leaves they will die anyway while transplanting. I appreciate the feedback!

I just read it said poisonous and have a bit of cyanide. Have to cook it. Can you do share a recipe of how you make the berries and the flower for tea.
I have a questions. Im planning to grow black elderberry. Do not eat raw black elderberry? I heard that elderberry has any poisons. poisons are contain both matured elderberry(black) and not matured elderberry(green or red)? So we don't make raw elderberry juice?
Yes the fresh berries are poisonous and must be cooked. We typically cooked them down and add water and honey and create elderberry syrup. We really need a video for the whole process.

I’m in zone 9 central Texas I have several solo cups with elderberries ranch,bob, American about 10-12 in tall with roots when would be the best time to plant if I plant now in September will the winter months kill them before they develop roots on the ground? Thank you
