    Jay needs to start a second channel showing all these craftsmen as they work. They wouldn't have to talk, even a time lapse camera set up would be amazing.

    As an avid car enthusiast, and a Dentist, I love the scanning technology! I use a scanner for all the crown and bridge that we do. As a car guy, having restored, or built a number of cars, it would be a great tool to have! Love the site, and watch all videos!

    Jay has got to be the biggest car enthusiast in the world! He not only collects cars, he knows them, knows how they work, and works on them himself. On top of that, he DRIVES his cars! He doesn't pay stupid money for a already finished car at auction, then makes it a trailer queen, he buys worn cars and make them new! Kudos to him!

    That would be amazing to have that scanner, cant even tell you how many times I've bought new parts and have had to shave, bend and even break for them to fit in my car. Maybe someday we will have a shop that you can bring a part to and have it scanned and built in less than an hour, this technology truly is the future.

    Jay is the most outstanding honest car guy. I love how he specifically states that he's not giving Maderaconcepts a plug but rather that he paid for their service on his Mercedes and just was so impressed with their work that he wanted to share his experience. The fact that he's not all about money making and loves his collection to be on par with the best is so appreciated! Nobody in the automotive world is like him. FaroArm. I can't believe they are still using them. We were using them back in '99 in Automotive crash testing. Even the storage case is the same. I used to pack ours up and send it out for calibration every 6 months. Not exactly new technology.

    • @TheEmperorPigeon
      @TheEmperorPigeon 7 років тому +1

      Well that's just it Sean, I completely agree. Further I'd also say that those who are like ourselves in this respect, understand that the 40-odd minute restoration programmes (be they cars, buildings, artworks or whatever) only show but a fraction of what went on, and usually only what can be daisy-chained in the editing suite to form a sort-of narrative.
      I remember a recent episode of Wheeler Dealers where the seats of that episode's car were being fully refurbished, right down to the cleaning of the foam. Now for the two minutes or so we see of this in the episode, more than likely was a day's work of both doing the example for us viewers and also due to the stop-start nature of filming (in order to have all the right shots and extra material for the final broadcast edit) and, speaking of that final edit, maybe a few hours deciding if that part of the restoration story is kept and - if so - what shots and if any voice over is required which then means one of the presenters (Brewer in this instance) is brought in at at later date into a recording booth at some nameless-to-us studio. Eep.
      So to bring myself back to your point Sean, I'd say to anyone who may want a proper glimpse (rather than just read our comments here) into the world of restoring or building something and maybe also filming it: setup a camera (mobile phone, action cam, proper DLSR camcorder, webcam...doesn't matter) and start work, making allowances for close-ups (a second, if not also a third, camera is strongly advised, along with separate microphones) and explaining along the way. Then, in the edit, condense it down to perhaps 15-30 minutes with narration and this hypothetical person may realise they need to demonstrate something in further detail...yeah, it's a lot of work regardless if a person is just restoring/building something and even more if filming it as well.
      Then of course is the moment of the first test and...something goes catastrophically wrong. Or everything is fine, until you show whatever it is to someone else and...something goes catastrophically wrong. Any one of us, myself very much included here, knows that particular kind of pain...

    I hope someone has explained the value of Source Code Control Systems like Git to whoever looks after Jay's files. Scanning and 3-D printing has similar problems to the creation of computer programs. The output of the scanner, and the files subsequently created from them almost certainly go through several iterations, possibly generating variants (thicker material in certain places, for example). Being able to track changes (and backtrack if required) is a major convenience.

      It's not. It's old tech (had a few blue laser scanners). What is alien (or might as well be) is the software.

    Hey Jay, it would be great if Mercedes actually provided all the parts for all the cars they've ever made, but they've disco'd all kinds of stuff. You can't buy lock sets for a W126 at any price.

    I would like to see a video of his office workers. He must have an office in the garage. If he has 200 vehicles, who keeps up on all the registrations and titles? Who communicates with the DMV when he purchases a vehicle? Who gets on the phone/net to locate a car/motorcycle he is looking for? Who schedules all the video shoots? Who locates a specific difficult/rare part? Who calls the vendors for off the shelf parts? Who signs for delivery of oil, tools, etc? If he sends a vehicle out, who coordinates it? There are a lot of tasks other than the mechanics/fabricators. There must be at least a half dozen people in his office making phone calls and such.

    These restoration blogs just keep getting better! The frustrating part is that we get 'just a taste' of the great automobiles you are returning to a useful life! I like to see your craftsmen and I also see great value in your providing website information: you have had to search this stuff out and other restorers (with no staff) can find a lot of what they need to make an otherwise hopeless project successful. Thanks!

      I was expecting a much higher number when Jay asked the price .
      Sounds very reasonable to me, and the rep even mentioned free lifetime support .
      You can't expect consumer goods prices for gear like that .

    • @aserta
      @aserta 7 років тому

      82 grand in an industry of automotive needs is pocket change, but imagine you buy this and you do more than just scan car parts, you make a join with architecture needs, boy, they'll pay you grand. Whilst the price for LiDars has been dropping, years ago, the price for one unit makes this laser seem like a toy.
      Not to mention that this particular scanner is far superior from a LiDar in the sense that you can acquire true 3D data, where as with a LiDar you have to switch ref points.
