Is that an immigrant story or a tourist story. I am a canadian citizen and every time i visit a friend who lives in the niagara on the lakes area, we cross the bridge and walk into the USA. We have lunch at a restaurant overlooking the falls, and walk in a beautiful park in the neighbourhood. I agree, it is extraordinary doing this walking across from one country to another. Are you back in South Africa?
As a child we would ride our bikes across the US/Canadian border without our parents or paperwork. We would go to the nearest town to buy American chocolate bars. Since 9/11 the border going South is much more painful with passports.
At one time you didn't even need a passport to go from Canada to the US. Just had to show your driver's license. Eventually, we'll need visas due to the increase in illegal crossings.

I've heard the same from many of my Canadian friends. All you used to need was your Canadian driver's license.

Right? The comment made me laugh at its sheer stupidity.
