Not unpopular at all. Hugh Jackman is a Baritone and this song is usually sung in a Tenor's range so it's not that this is necessarily bad, just sounds weird for people who have heard this song before.
I agree, not only the Range of his Baritone (Vs Tenor as pointed out by DJ M), but I think just his general style of voice is less suited to 'pop' type songs, be they from musicals or not. I still enjoy his stuff because he always comes across as kind and sincere, but this was not my favorite thing he's ever done.
Imagine for a second: Connor's dad is singing after Connor's funeral and everyone else leaves the cemetery. He's sitting next to the fresh dirt and flowers near his son's gravestone. (that's what I like to imagine)

i saw him in australia and when he sung this, i had never heard of dear evan hansen or this song. i am so disappointed that i didn’t film this because every time i watch a video of it, i start crying. it’s just so beautiful and he does it so well

Being the middle kid is the worst. You get the flaws of being young and having the responsibilities of being older. There is no Perks of being the middle kid.

Still not satisfied bc you don’t have a video that you filmed but ecstatic bc Wolverine sang your two favorite musicals- les MIs and deh. Oh wait. That’s my story that I just realized right now. Whoo
